There are two separate debates going on:

1. that the LOTR BDs don't look good period.
2. that the LOTR BDs don't look quite as good as the HDTV broadcast.

It sounds like Bill and RAH only commented about number one.

That can be true, while at the same time these BDs may not look as good as the HDTV feed which had slightly more detail.
I didn't see more detail, just a sharper image. They are not one and the same.

Not all such conversions are created equal. There would still be smoother motion and fewer motion artifacts from the progressive blu-ray than the interlaced hdtv broadcast.

One other thing screenshots can't show us is whether or not the "grain" people believe they are seeing in the hdtv screenshots are not in fact digital noise created from the transfer.

I haven't seen the blu as of yet, and am reserving judgement on it's quality, but I find it hard to believe that the HDTV broadcast could be superior.

You must not be looking very hard then.

On the Blu Ray version his pores magically disappear and he turns into a wax statue.

Look at the pic Eric uploaded of the title screen with Frodo sitting against the tree...look long and hard at the grass. Not only is the picture more colorful but the grass is more detailed!

Check out the background in the HDTV cap. It's full of blocking noise artefacts. Or check out his cheek, more artefacts. Maybe it's just my monitor....

The broadcast here in Canada was 1.78:1 but in French they actualy show less commercials, they do that a lot for late night movies.

Default I think some people here are in denial

If the screenshots are to be believed and have been captured correctly, then Warner indeed performed another one of their botch jobs. Sure, they are going to look better the DVD versions, but not by much from what the screenshots show. These movies are way too new and way too well shot for them not to look ridiculously good on Blu-ray. IE: they should look like the best Blu-ray has to offer. EVERYONE was expecting that and the expectation was not unreasonable, but in fact 100 percent correct. Heck, the Lowery Bond Blu-rays beat these and those movies are a heck of a lot older. As far as "professional" reviewers(the very thought is absolutely hilarious), they can't be trusted, PERIOD.

With the tone of recent posts, I am getting the feeling I must be on the AVS website....but this may explain a lot too.

You keep criticizing people who are talking about the disc's image quality of not staying "on topic," but all you've posted is "I care about audio quality," a definition of the word subjective (super useful,) and other completely unrelated things 5 thousand times - nothing of substance.

Just because you don't care about image quality doesn't mean this isn't the place for it.

I don't know, I've seen screencaps before(not saying these ones) that didn't do the release justice. I do know I have all 3 saved on my hd dvr and watched them the other day and FOTR looked terrible, so I have a hard time believing the blu will look worse than it did on TNTHD. I say we settle it like this....people that like the screen caps better, stick with the broadcast versions of the movies. Those, like myself, that want to clear the space from their dvr and want an audio mix that isn't 5.1 DD can buy the movies on April 6. I do know one thing though, when we get these movies home and we decide that to us the transfer looks jsut like Bill Hunt said it did, then I have a feeling their will be a sh*t storm headed the way of the screen cap defenders. Not saying I'll be one of them because I have better stuff to do then bash people on a forum, but I will definately be on here to watch the fireworks. lol

This is the philosophy I am taking Bob. By the way, I hope all is well with the little one....

No that's not what I am claiming. Do you personally know ANYONE posting these so-called screen captures? If not, then can YOU be that dumb to trust something from someone you don't know?

Yes, I am focusing on appreciating the movies, for which I have waited so long; I'll worry about how many pixels were violated later! The newest granddaughter is doing great and we are already planning her first trip to Disneyland (somewhat premature, but the planning is fun).

Fellowship of the ring is the most powerful movie in the trilogy. Anyone agree?

Eric.exe posts screenshots all the time, and they've been accurate in the past. Keep in mind that the images will look different when viewed on a monitor or even through a pc on a television than the blu-ray would in your player.

There was a big guffaw about his screenshots from Gladiator and they proved to be accurate.

I am working my way through FOTR again, but only slowly. I thought I would be further into it than I am.

My kids are 5 and 1 and have not been there yet, but they will I figure, as all kids go there. I am interested to see how long my 5 year old daughter is willing to sit next to me and watch FOTR on blu before she "wanders" off. I'll give it 20 minutes, tops.

Why? Just because they have the REAL Blu-rays to look at? (He said sarcastically)
