Maybe they are overcomplicating it. . . . .
Two movies will undoubtedly offer alot of leeway to show additional material. The White Council would be an interesting subplot to insert. Gandalf refers to Sauron as the Necromancer, because until the Council meets, it is not 100% certain that the Necromancer is actually Sauron. Once it is confirmed, the decision is made to oust him. It is only ceremonial however, since Saruman's goal is to get Sauron away from that area, in particular the Gladden Fields, because that is where Isildur was killed and lost the Ring in the river. Saruman, Chief Wizard of the White Council, is at this point becoming a traitor and wants the Ring for himself. Again, with 6+ hours of movie plot to fill, this would be a tempting subplot.

You have to remember that yes many fans of the books see the movies but a lot more people who see them will not read the books and never will. Imagine the shock they would have going to see Bilbo and get a simple kid story push at them...would not work very well on the box office.
I think it would depend upon how they develop it.Don't knock simple kid stories:Look at toy story and monsters inc.Heck:even Up is a simple morality tale, and it was nominated for best picture

Guess what I'm trying to say is that I think they are going about it in the wrong way.Maybe not view it is also an option I guess...

PS:Not trying rub anyone anyway what so ever here

Yeah bilbo was whiny in hobbit.

Anyway my favorite hobbit is Samwise gamgee.

I was not knocking Bilbo, I love the story. It's just I can see why they would want to change the movie and make it a bit more then what the book was about. No matter how you slice it, they have hard shoes to fill after the first 3 movies

The first film I think will be about the journey to Misty Mountain and then the second film will be everything that happens after that. Would be nice if both films did well and they made parts of the Silmarillion into movies.

Without knowing anything, a good place to end the first one would be Bilbo and the Dwarves waiting to enter Mirkwood while Gandalf leaves them, or perhaps a little later when the Dwarves are abducted by the Elves of Mirkwood?

I would guess when they exit the forrest elves and head toward the city on the water would be the ideal spot. That way one could have two distinct feel for the movies. One an adventure movie, the other more like LoTR feel.

Guess we'll see in a couple of years...

It should be good - men, orcs, dwarves, elves, eagles, and Beorn as a giant bear; what more could we ask for?

Okay, so it has been said that 'Bilbo Baggins knows who he is' i.e the part has been cast, but Weta/Warner are keeping shtum about it. who are the serious contenders that people really think is going to play the part?

James Mcavoy? Angus Macfadyen? Martin Freeman? (GodPleaseNo!)

basically, we definitely are waiting on the MGM crisis, in case there were any doubts.

Too bad - and somewhat ironic, since the return on these films will undoubtedly give MGM the financial boost they need.
