One can only hope. For me, there can never be a version of these films that has too much supplementary material. This will probably be the last chance for a comprehensive release.

Bilbo to put it bluntly never seemed to have Frodo's drive or strong sense of purpose.

I don't have the Hobbit yet, the Silmarillion is somewhere around here and LOTR is in transit.

That explains it - we were missing you in the LoTR group!

Who Bilbo is at the beginning, and who Bilbo becomes by the end of 'The Hobbit', are two completely different characters.

Frodo's "strong sense of purpose", while certainly an innate aspect of his personality, is also a product of his task. Bilbo never had any such task, any such responsibility. He was a different man with a completely different journey. Bilbo's journey was ultimately one of extraordinary self-benefit: he acquired great wealth, saw the world and had unbelievable adventure, but mostly he grew up a lot as a person and learned a great deal about himself.

Another factor is the target audience at the time the stories were written. The Hobbit was originally written as a children's story, so one would expect the protagonist to have Bilbo's personality traits, rather than the introspective, self-sacrificial characteristics of Frodo.

Or, to simplify, 'Lord of the Rings' is not a continuation of 'The Hobbit', it is a completely different story within the same setting. Bilbo's story is not Frodo's story.

Consequently, it will interesting to see how much of the flavor of Jackson's LoTR is carried over by Del Toro.

Has Del Toro ever shot in Cinemascope before? I can't recall anything, but I'm no expert on the guy. Curious how he'll adapt to that.

"There and back again, a hobbit's tale" by Bilbo Baggins. Fascinating creatures Hobbits, you can learn everything there is to know about them in a month and yet after 100 years they can still surprise you.

It has indeed been at least minor issue. It's a new thing for him, but he has good help available, especially if they will be using the services of Andrew Lesnie again.

I am thinking of reading Lord of the Rings.

Don't know how much time will it take to finish. I finished the hobbit in 4-5 days.

Haven't you read it already?

What jumps out at me immediately, is what a completely different character Frodo is in the book, versus in the movie. I don't like movie Frodo, he is a total lightweight, a whiner, and more of a clue-less obligated sacrificial lamb rather than a thoughtful man with a heavy sense of destiny and responsibility. Elijah Wood as Frodo is my Jar-Jar Binks, the re-imagining of that character and his dreadful acting very nearly ruined what I consider to be the greatest film of all time.

They are a bit different in their direction, it will sound and have a different look but I am sure they will try to keep it at a minimun, they are not crazy and know that people will expect LOTR feel to these two movies

Think it depends on how strong Del Toro is.Think Jackson is going to have a pretty heavy hand on this production.I hope Del Toro fights to retain control over direction over Jackson myself.

I just hope Del Toro keeps a dark edge for the film and also does't get as crazy with the CGI. I'm really getting sick of films having way too much CGI. Especially in the backdrops. I'd prefer matte paintings to some of the stuff that's been done in the last few years.
