Default Spider-Man not so great???

Can someone please tell me what happened here? Did I over look something? I just got through watching Spider-man on BD and I was not really impressed at all. It actually left me kind of disappointed. I was really expecting Spider-man 1-3 to blow me away. The PQ was "pretty good", but you could tell that it could have been a lot better. And the SQ was not that great either (just standard 5.1 like on a DVD?). Was Spider-man just such an older film that they didn't want to work too hard on transferring it well to BD? I am really hoping that the PQ/SQ really improve with parts 2 and 3. I can't believe this. I'm glad I NetFlix'ed them. I would have been really pissed if I paid $60 for the set and this "not so great picture and sound" was my first impression of my new purchase. Can someone tell me what went wrong?

It's how it looked theatrically

All 3 films have uncompressed sound

I put the movie back in to double check this. The Spider-man main menu says English Dolby TrueHD 5.1, but I have heard Dolby TrueHD (like on my NIN:BYIT BD), and Spider-man's audio did not sound very good at all. My brother even commented about how crappy it sounded compared to many other BDs we have seen (and we've seen most of them). Is it fair to call TrueHD tracks uncompressed? I don't know the specifics, but I know Spider-man didn't sound half as good as it could have. Such a shame.

Spiderman 1 is lacking, but the Suberbit DVD was so it's not new here

But SP2 and 3 look wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better than the DVD

You need a projector to really appreciate how crappy dvd is and how great HDM are... and no comments at the sound..

DId you set it to THD?

Spidey 1 they spent almost all the money on R&D and the FS budget....

Yeah, there is no way not to, since the THD track is the only one in English. I originally thought that maybe I selected just a standard 5.1 mix, so I popped it back in to double check. There is no standard mix to choose, just the THD one in English, then a bunch in other languages. I wonder why it didn't sound very good? There was no crispness to it. It didn't sound like I was there. I didn't feel like the sounds were all around me at different times either. Just sounded very much like standard DVD audio. For example, I watched The Departed the other night with a PCM track. Sounded MUCH better than what I heard tonight, and The Departed didn't have much action in it. It was more of a crime drama. So how does a cop/mob movie get better sound than Spider-man?

Just because you selected TrueHD doesn't mean you're actually decoding it. You may only be listening to the core (which doesn't sound THAT bad, even though it's far from TrueHD). What player/reciever are you using and how are they connected?

I have a PS3 hooked up via HDMI to an Onkyo 605 which is connected to seven speakers, a sub, and a 61 inch, 1080p Samsung HL-T6189S. Everything is placed well and has sounded great up until this BD. That is why I was kinda disappointed. Normally, BDs sound amazing. And I stand behind BD 100% as a superior product to HD-DVD. My NIN:BYIT BD has Dolby TrueHD and it sounds amazing, and I am pretty sure it is a 5.1 mix as well, but I just found Spider-man's 5.1 mix to be kind of lacking, like it's picture quality. I am hoping for much better out of parts 2 and 3.

it doesnt matter, if you select a THD track on ps3 and you are connected HDMI it sends it as THD converted to PCM (decoded in ps3) regardless if the setting is bitstream or PCM

I wouldn't think a music disc would be the best to compare a film to.

I just watched spidey 1 disc. At my usual 2PH viewing distance (same as watching 35mm on a theater, about a 100" diagonal 16:9 screen from 8 feet away), apart from this, seems pretty good, better than most 35mm projection:

It seems to have some mid high frequency boost (AKA edge enhancement) while the very highest frequencies aren't high (wanna see high frequencies high? watch something like x-men 3)

But the interesting thing is that at 4PH or 720p which is what most people watch these things, it should look great for them.

Unless they all expect everything to look shot on digital noiseless video... even Nosferatu

Default Spider-Man 2 video quality in question

I purchased the trilogy yesterday at Wal-Mart. Going by the review on this site I had no qualms about the $64 price knowing Sony would offer nothing but the best for their product. Spidey 3 was all that I'd hoped for - all the review said it was and more.

I was then horrified to see grainy muck on my screen while viewing 2. What happened? Why is no one else complaining? I haven't even opened 1 because I have no intentions of keeping this mess. Wal-Mart will not take this product back, only exchange it for the same thing. This is extremely disappointing.
