Default Heads up for anyone buying LOTR

For anyone ordering LOTR, be very carefull. There are a couple of versions out there circulating ready to dupe unsuspecting buyers. One to be wary of are the cheap sub-par versions being sold by Alliance films and ready to flood the market. Almost anything on Blu that comes from them is just dvd quality not even close to what Blu-Ray should be. Be vigillant guys, a big name film like this will attract a lot of fraudsters, from street copies to sub-par transfers.

Well said.

You'll be waiting a long time to get the EEs on Blu...even longer for the 3D editions.

There is no difference between the "Alliance" copys and the "New line" ones, the "Alliance" release is for Canada.

O.k Alliance have released a few "New line" back catalogue titles that they had the licence for ie, "Seven" and "Freddy v's jason" to name a couple, and true enough these titles have no extras, and are poor, but releases like "Halloween rob zombie" and "The lord of the rings" are the same as the u.s. versions,as they were released at the same time.

When I went to Futureshop and looked at their listing for LOTR, it said Universal Home Video, not Warner.

I agree! I would bet money they end up with the same transfer. I'm sure the people dieing for the EEs will end up saying they look amazing (placebo effect).

Actualy most of us waiting for the EE as nothing to do with the PQ, as a matter of fact I am quite ok with the release as it is now. The only reason I am waiting for the EE is because that is the version I want, got no interest in the EE. I never bought them on DVD and I certainly won't be buying them on Blu-ray. Once the EE is release I will purchase them because of the following

1. they will look better then the DVD (no matter what some people are saying)

2. that is the version I want

I certainly don't wish that on anyone. I don't want to be like the people who held out on Gladiator, then mocked those who didn't when the re-release was announced merely 5 months later...

You have this wrong. Alliance does release bare-bones, HD broadcast versions when they are going it alone; however, when they release same day releases with the US counterpart, it has always been the same transfer and extras. LOTR won’t be any different.

It's not surprising that there's a lot of ignorance on this subject. Many buyers aren't aware of these things. Unfortunately sir you are wrong, there are multiple versions out there and some will end up with sub-par copies. I can only warn those that do not know, the rest is buyer beware.

I have no doubt that the quality of these discs are going to be just fine, the reason I'm waiting is because the extended cut are a much more superior product. If in a year or two, when the extended cuts of The Lord of the Rings are released with the exact same transfer I won't complain one bit. The video/audio is quite good from what I have seen, I just want the better films.

Where is everyone seeing the video/audio for these releases that come out in 5 days?

I feel left out. I would LOVE to get my hands on these before Tuesday.

Honestly "Big T" there is some truth in your post, but some errors as well.

I ordered the "New line" "Texas chainsaw massacre" twice in error.i ordered one copy from "Amazon" and one from "play.com usa",when both copys arrived the Amazon copy was the "New line u.s version and the Play.com usa was the Canadian "Alliance" copy, and there was no difference at all in these releases.

However "Alliance" have been cashing in on titles not yet released in the u.s,as they have the Canadian distribution rights to them, and not just "New line" movies,ie "Seven" "The butterfly effect" "a nightare on elm street" "Freddy v's jason" "Traffic" and "From dusk till dawn" there may be more but i am not sure, these movies were all released with no extras at all just the movies. Some of these titles have been since been released in the u.s but not all of them.

But movies released by "New line" in the u.s are released at the same time by "Alliance" in Canada,as i do not think Warner have a "New line" distribution in canada,so they produce the Blu-rays and all "Alliance" do is distribute them,it is however a very confusing situation,as "Warner" distribute all their films in canada themselves,i can only assume with "New line" being a smaller branch of "Warner" it's more cost effective for them to let "Alliance" distribute for them.

Well, as long as they're not dying...

Unless they do an all new digital IP for the EE's they will look the same.

I am curious if people did detailed comparisons between the theatrical and EE transfers on DVD, and what the results were, other than higher bitrate for the EEs being spread over 2 discs.

I wouldn't be too sure about that. If there is one frame in the movie that has too much DNR, there will be a 20,000 post thread about it.
