I'm watching FOTR right now on my 40" from about 2' away.
The DNR is definitely most noticeable in the first 20 minutes.
The worst parts are in Bilbo's kitchen -- just look at Gandalf's beard during that scene. It looks very soft and there's hardly any detail.

It's still much better than the upscaled DVD, but it's slightly disappointing.
I'm glad I Netflixed it rather than spending $60 on a slight improvement.

If its "much better" how is it only a "slight improvement" ?

What about the people who are genuinely unimpressed/disappointed? Are they also mad about the EEs not coming out and wrongfully taking it out on the TEs? Do you realize how crazy this sounds?

Crazy? Go to amazon and look at the ratings people gave it because it wasn't the EE! Those same people would find any reason to bash it! You need to get your head out of the sand and understand that people are that petty and will do something like that. I'm not saying all of the people but alot would. Was it a awesome transfer? No, I would give it 3.5-3.75. Don't forget you are the one that said that said bill hunt gave it a higher rating then what it should of got because of pressure from the studios. Whats funny to me is that you still haven't even seen the movies and you still try to judge it! I know you wanna wait until the holidays

Bill Hunt gave FOTR PQ 17/20.
https://forum.blu-ray.com/insider-di...ml#post3070703
"The Digital Bits doesn't use a linear scale like you might expect. If I recall correctly they came up the rating out of 20 for BD, where the perfect DVD would be a 10/20, and BD scoring starts from there and goes to 20. So an 18/20 would be closer to an 8/10 than a 9/10. "

So 17/20 would be about 3.5 stars out of 5.
Not commenting wether you're right or wrong, FYI to all of you.

If your going to quote my opinion on Bills review, atleast get it right. I did not say it was from studio pressure in particular.........go back and read it again.

And some (thankfully these type of people are in the minority) people on the other side of the debate are not petty enough to give this a GREAT rating no matter if it deserves it or not? Come on! It works both ways and to say otherwise is ignorant!

HUGE difference between whats going on at Amazon and "everyone who bashed it" which I assumed was people who have watched it and gave opinions I agree with you about Amazon.

What does me having seen or not seen it have to do with your comment? And WTF does it matter if I dont see these until the holidays........that is when I enjoy watching these films! OK with you?! No matter if I find this transfer to be awesome, terrible or anything in between, I certainly will NOT defend my side of the argument with something as ridiculous as your comment. Not EVERYONE who is "bashing" it is doing so because these are not the EEs........not even close Again if you were speaking just about the Amazon situation, I agree that those people are being crazy, but you should have made that clear Its obvious that many people are both genuinely disappointed to some degree with this transfer as well as genuinely happy with it. Why cant you accept that?

Ya thats what I thought the PQ was 3.5-3.75 and Todd thought it was to high because of screen caps he saw and thought bill was a sell out.

from the looks of it (it i didnt read ALL of them) the poeple with projectors or huge TV's rate FotR low and the ones with the 46inch or under rate it good. i have a 42 inch samsung and when i watched this i thought it looked very good. then when i watched TTT i instantly noticed the difference in picture quality from the opening scene. however it still looks good and i have no regrets on buying it AT ALL.

My point is how can you even judge the PQ if you haven't seen it? Every big reviewer who gave it a good review you countered them. People have made comments about that. Penton-man even made a comment about the way you are

You would get more respect if you actually saw the movie then gave your opinion, instead of trying to counter the good reviews. (4-10-10 when todd smith sees the movie he will come back and bash the pq ) Thats my prediction.

Todd, I believe your point has been welded into this thread for all eternity to see, well done. We all agree You dont like them, fine. Its time to move on. Your belittling arguments are counter productive and the mess than ensues afterwards is not rewarding.

I would love it when they come out with the EE that they are in the same book type as the DVD EE they were great.

Yeah it seems here people are mixed on this release.
I guess what is surprising to me is that so many people are happy with the PQ of Fellowship when it is so clearly softer than the last two and not just the shire scenes.

When they are going past the statues of the kings on the rivers I remember that in the cinema as being like watching a scene in Planet Earth, but to me it looked very soft. But my meomory could be screwy

Now if Fellowship was the only film released I would understand being content but it does look so much softer than the others.

Thanks all

Crazy stuff indeed. I'm fascinated by the idea that people like Treebeard, Bombadil, Legolas, etc., are so old and knowledgeable, but still have an incomplete understanding of middle earth, it's inhabitants, and history.

Like wouldn't you think in several thousand years that you'd get bored and go ahead and see what's on the other side of the river. Or the idea that Treebeard had never heard of Hobbits or the Sire. I mean the Sire is not exactly Rhode Island.

It's obviously the softest of the three. We all agree on that. However, your memory might be like mine. When LOTR came out in Theaters i thought it was a sea change type movie, and maybe it was. But now, it's production shows some warts and age. It's not perfectly shot or rendered CGI, but IMO it's the strongest MOVIE of the trilogy. I think the greatness of the models and the costumes are enough eye candy for me. I can forgive some dated and soft CGI moments.
