Yah but like Bill Hunt said the people that are going to buy this are those that already have hd dvd player and want a second one for maybe another room or those that won't have the money to fork out 30 bucks for a movie and will only buy the regular version to have it upscaled......

The article should be posted in more places.
A good dose of reality. It's GOOD news for DUD though! ![]() |

Look at it this way...Insiders have said there are only 50,000 of these A2's for the 200 now 99 dollar sale. You have to know that at least 60% of those players are going to go to people that already have an hd dvd player. So that means only about 20000 new hd dvd custumer's. Of that, only probably 5,000 of those will buy more than 2 hd dvd's in the year.
And what is coming out tomorrow? Oh yeah the new ps3 that will sell many more than 50,000 in one day. This sale won't have an effect at all. |

Bill has said everything we've been saying on this forum over the last day or so, but he also highlighted two extremely important points:
Pixar is more of a threat to HD DVD than we realise. Forumgoers aren't usually family types, so might not think that these are the truly big ones, but the appearance of the first Pixar titles (three on the same day, no less) on Blu-ray could lead to vast sales. Toshiba's virtual player giveaway might balance out the sales, but probably not as much as they're hoping. HD DVD software remains as pricey as ever, and people who are too cheap to buy a decent player will certainly balk at the disc cost. Toshiba is not only runing the chance of anyone ever producing a HD DVD player again, but is acting in an uncompetitive way within the entire industry. And, of course, this will be duly noted within the industry, and remembered long after HD DVD goes the way of the dodo. I'm just glad 3 or 4 US states saw fit to outlaw practices such as these. Anyway, I still don't think their firesale will hurt anyone as much as themselves. |

hey what is the number of HDDVD players out their currently? is it like 250k or something?
So, if they sell through the 50k at these low sub 200 maybe even sub 100 dollar prices in say....2 weeks (if they are lucky) then that still means a 20% increase in the number of HDDVD players out there. Its not great for HDDVD but it also isn't bad:/ |

But the same week the 40GB PS3 will sell, what, 250K, and go strong right through to Christmas? |

IMO, its HD DVDs final attack.... but it's pretty strong.
With this they put themselves back in the game or hopefully, they die trying. |

He is always right on. I wish he could get on a broader and louder forum for the masses to hear what he has to say!

I dont know how many times I have heard some of my customers say that they would NOT pay $30 for a movie. So dropping the price of a player is going to change thier minds? Nope! This desperation move isnt going to help them. Sorry HD DVD its going to be all over but the crying.

My only take is this, great now you have a fake next generation player (1080i).
Now lets go buy a movie. Hey mom lets buy cars, sorry sweetie it's not available on hd dvd. That's ok mom let's buy spiderman series. sorry sweetie that not available on hd dvd either. Ok I guess, lets get FF i am sorry sweetie that's not available either. Damn mom what the hell did you buy? There is nothing available for the piece of crap. You think we can get our money back and get a blu-ray player instead? |

I have very big doubts that this will have any effect on the sale of Disney BDs this coming week. Ratatouille is doing very well on Amazon and Cars is starting to make a move. I don't think that the Pixar Shorts will do as well, but I am sure it will sell a few, its not a movie, so is not as desireable to some people. I think Ratatouille could outdo Transformers.

Bill made some very valid and logical points! The whole promotion is clearly an act of desperation. If this fails for them Warner will go Blu and Paramount will sh!t in their pants for making a premature idiotic deal!

"Is it any accident that Toshiba didn't wait for Black Friday to sell their $99 players, instead carefully planning the 3-day sale for the weekend before Disney and Pixar release Cars, Ratatouille and the Pixar Short Films Collection on Blu-ray?"
Poor timing by HD DVD. There would still be time to return the HD DVD players once people realize it won't play those movies. ![]() |
