Just starting AVATAR now -- Loud I might add -- will report back later on how the PA-120's perform.

I just watched "9" last night (a end of the world cartoon/CG movie).

The LFE was awesome. I can't believe how much LFE this thing had. I really enjoyed it - and it's short - just 1 hour and 15 minutes.

There was LFE all throughout which was surprising.

Make sure you keep AVATAR on through the end credits for the THX treat!

I did just to see how many people worked on this thing -- must have been 500-700, give or take. Good lord, the credits of names/companies/departments, just kept Going & Going... --- I Started movie with the Volume at -20 just to see how loud it'd be, as that's usually a Decent volume level for loudness. It was pretty good, but I then upped it to -18, then -16, before settling at -14 dbs'!!! --- When the credits started I lowered it to -18, but didn't know about the nice visual animation of the THX Logo with the horns, strings, BASS, etc. Good LORD, if I'd kept it at -14, () I'd have been plastered against my wall I suppose.

As for the movie, after seeing it on Opening Night back in December in an Official IMAX theater in 3D, and 2 subsequent times after (once in "Real-D 3D" & then in a Converted to IMAX theater in 3D), this was the first time seeing it in normal 2D mode. Now my TV is just a decent-sized 50" DLP in only 720p, but DAMN, this movie is Right up there in PQ with Any Animated movie out there ("Monsters, Inc.", "UP!", "Cars", "Toy Story 1 & 2", the list could go on). PERFECT PICTURE QUALITY, Amazing detail, Crystal clear clarity in everything on screen, both small And large. The last viewing of this for me was in January but it was like watching it One day after my 1st viewing in December. THAT'S how Engraved in my memory this movie is & will remain. So yea, you could say I LOVE "AVATAR" - Naysayers aside, this is one Incredible & Thoroughly Enjoyable Film IMO.

Oh, & lets's talk about the Audio -- Well, as Reference quality as the Video is, the Audio stands Right Beside it; knocking your sox off to match the Eye Candy of Color & Visuals on display before you. As most would expect, Nothing about the Audio disappoints. At times I hoped for a bit more LFE when certain events happened, but that's just being greedy. The Low-End certainly delivered, but like many parts of the film, I found myself wanting more. Again, not out of any lackluster effort mind you, just because I'm an LFE Wh0re, if you will. ( ).

If you saw this in theaters, especially IMAX ones, you Know the parts where the Low-end Hits you Hard. You won't be short-shrifted with this Bluray presentation by any means. The Artillery, Explosions, trees falling to the ground in the battle sequences... They All let you really FEEL what your PA-120 Subs can do, which is to put it simply, Punch you in the gut with a 200-lb Sledgehammer. Whether it is the action on screen, or the Musical score beneath it, the Audio features some very nice low-end thru-out.

Of course, not forgetting the rest of the movie, Center dialogue is perfectly clear. Whether during a fight scene or battle, or just an indoor scene with a few people, you hear everything clearly. Surround speakers really get a chance to shine in AVATAR also. Every forest scene, musical accompaniment, action set piece, branches breaking & so on; you hear things with such clarity, it puts you Right There with Jake Sully & the Na' Vi'. Left/Right seperation is Beyond spot-on, whether via the Front sound-stage or surround activity.

This is now my TOP Reference Bluray for AUDIO & VIDEO. For those of you Lucky SOB's with Higher-End speakers (B&W, Paradigm, fill-in-the-blank with your spkr of choice:___________) & Subs (SVS, eD, etc.), and LARGE SCREENS of 80-100" Plus, vice 40-60" lowly TV's (), I have but a few things to say & do: I am Jealous & I await an Invite to your HT!

Aero, I noticed in your pictures that at one point you had a sub 20" off the ground and now it looks like with your 120, its a couple inches off. Could you tell a big difference between the 2 heights? I'm going to be building my riser soon for my 120 and can go two routes. My original plan was to get it about 8-10" off the ground and put it in the corner where my current sub is. I did the sub crawl a little bit ago with my current sub and I really feel like I get the best sound when it's over in the corner (that could change when I get the 120 in). If I build a riser that's only 3" off the ground I'll be able to get it inside of my right speaker next to the tv stand and it will fit under (tv extends past the stand on the side). My concern is that If I build it higher, I may be limited to where I can place it. My dad just came over because he was unaware of the THX at the end of AVATAR, so we had to crank it a couple times, man I'm soooo excited for the PA 120 to arrive, please forgive me if I'm jumping the gun on a lot of questions, just pumped up!

The Sub in the pics where it was 20+ inches high I believe was my PSW-10 (Polk Audio), which on the table in question, was easier as it weighs Quite a bit less. The PA-120 is 56 lbs. or so, so I knew THAT particular table wouldn't do to support it. That said, I already had the SubDude on Top of the table & so decided to use that as the only riser for the 120, & it works/sounds fine at the 3" height. So I can't say IF it would perform BETTER at a higher height as I haven't had it up high. It works fine where it is, as does the my 2nd (& Newest) PA-120 on my DIY Riser that's about 3" high also.

But I think if you find a good LOCATION where the Sub crawl seems to have worked already, then you should be good at a height that works for YOUR room design. What works for me, might not work for you & vice versa. Every room is different (surfaces, reflection points, Height of ceiling, Fabrics on Curtains or couches/chairs, etc), which all can play a role in how a certain spkr or Sub will sound.

Not sure if I answered your question(s) "specifically", but that's my story, & yup - I'm stickin' to it...

Thanks! I guess I'm just a little confused about if a sub should sound better on a riser 10" or 3" or if there really wouldn't be a noticeable difference at all? I kind of overlooked the whole everyones room is going to be different, just trying to get some opinions from those who had both!

Okay Im thinking about the Pa-120 but wondering if anything else for around 250 compares.

I was looking at some bic's, but everybody says PA si the best entry level sub im only expecting to get one for awhile so just wondering if just one fo these will do

it depends on the size of ur room,,, but 2 is always better than one.. in terms of ballanced sound throughout the room...

check out my gallery and u will see why i have dual subs... i have a very huge area to fill...

even though its considered entry level... i dont think i will be upgrading any time in the near or distant future.. i have all that i could want and need... both with movies and music

lol - yea, it's MY fault you're watching it again? Admit it, it's a great movie & you were just looking for a reason. My Very Positive review (TOP REFERENCE QUALITY) "may" have helped push you over the edge to viewing #_____, so if that's true, so be it.

Usually, anything OFF the ground, is going to help, or Should. But, room design & various limitations DO play into it also. Try it at both heights if you can. Play the same 2-4 scenes from a few favorite films with Real nice LFE (TDK, Iron Man, Incred. Hulk, U-571, HELLBOY II, Max Payne), at 10" high, and again at 3" high -- That should give you a good idea of what sounds right FOR YOUR Room.

Very true. Two will usually sound better than one, in terms of balancing things out, yes. --- Entry level (?) or not, the PA-120 is one Very well-Made, solid performer for the money. Others may match, but IMO, you won't be disappointed in how this Sub can do the Job at hand.
