My copy should arrive this week. I am interesting in studying the slit-scan sequence in detail, knowing that this is not at all computer generated! Well, not to mention seeing the whole film again, in detail.

Got mine on order on account of all the rave reviews. Excellent (if different film), possibly the most realistic space film ever made until Apollo 13. Though even Apollo 13 mucked up the realism by putting sound effects in space. 2001 didn't.

Anyway... Looking forward to Rigsby in HD

Ive seen 2001 in pretty much every format. I expected it to look good on BD but for a 40 year old film it looks amazing. What really stands out for me are the colors. If you do buy the BD check out the spacesuits in the launch bay...looks like they invented new colors just for the film.

I have not seen Delicate Sound of Thunder, maybe one for Concerts needed on Blu. I saw the live show back on that tour.

I'm looking forward to the David Gilmour concert that should be coming later this month. It be interesting how Echoes sounds now.

Well, I ordered from amazon then cancelled cuz I was angry at their not having enough in stock for the release date. Then I ordered from a small indie shop that is just beginning to sell blu-rays (to me specifically, but it's a start). Their distributor (who ships overnight) had to order it from another place.

You're right... it's really, really boring... for anyone with an attention span under 20 seconds. For anyone half interested in cinema it's amazing.

hi freinds,i thought 2001 pq was 5/5 but it makes me wonder why a film about 30 years old can look this good and some of the more recent movies don't look that good?

And as a reminder for those who have forgotten or have never seen it, the first couple of minutes of the film are audio only, no picture. Do not attempt to adjust your television set. Or HT.

Too bad about the wait, but good news about getting a neighborhood shop to start sourcing Blu for you. Nice work.

For starters, it was filmed in 65mm. Also, it was a very prestigious title, which means the studio kept it in very good condition, making new prints etc.

Apparently this transfer has been done from a pristine 35mm print that can't be too many generations down from the original negative.

And finally, some titles just get the love when they're being mastered and encoded. And 2001 got a HD DVD-level VC-1 encode, which means it wasn't even tailored to the full Blu-ray spec. So it means Warner were extra careful to do it just right.

Actually, it is almost 40 years old now! The quality of the special effects are amazing.

I did finally get to watch 2001 this afternoon. Hard to believe that it was made in 1968 as you pointed out. Way ahead of its time. And now I can see it is the inspiration for so much of what we now see now. PQ was awesome. I do not have a sound system and cannot truly rate AQ but it sounded good to my ears on what I do have.

Hi everyone.

As I noted on another thread, 2001, is one of my all time fave movies.

Within days of its release, I was out looking to purchase the Blu version of the movie, wherever I could find it. Alas, no single retailer had a copy.

So I resorted to ordering online, using the source that I have often used, reliably, many times. They indicated a ship date of 11/7. Now they are saying they will ship on 11/21.

Wow, what is going on? Did Warner get caught by surprise, and not order up enough Blu copies initially? Perhaps this is a great indicator of how well the Blu format may be fairing (along with the long waits for the free discs, in the 5 free promo).

At any rate, I am anxiously awaiting my Blu 2001!!

Just watched it last night. Great movie, but PQ wasn't that great. Definitely not a show off piece. Too much grain and generally flat looking picture.
