The only way I'll be buying The Simpsons on DVD is when they finally get up to releasing the seasons originally done in HD (properly this time, and not in a mad rush for an anniversary cash-in), and even then I would hope you could buy them in cases of DVD size, identical to some of Disney's blu-ray / dvd combos (without the DVD part)

As for the questions about the case, id put my money on a standerd BD case, since Fox has used that for every tv series I have come over from them, Firefly, Dollhouse, Sons of Anarchy and so on. What type of case did they use for season 20?

Anywho, im deffidently getting this

Well, I can't believe Im saying this. But no Blu buy for me. Why would I?

The season wasnt meant/shot for HD. So, Ill just get the regular set. Great cover art. Might try and find the head edition.

I'm sure a fair amount got reasonable DVD sales, I don't see how their widescreen-ness should affect studios decision...
My point is, they spend their time, money and effort on an older release, that will just push the newer more recent release further back. I wouldn't mind getting some old TV shows on Blu-Ray, too, but I rather see them put out Demolition Man, Judge Dredd, or TV Shows like the first 5 season of Entourage out on Blu-Ray.

Tons of things weren't meant/shot for HD, but still look magnificent on Blu-Ray.

Not to mention BDs are more robust than DVDs. They can also fit more programs per disc so less disc swapping.

The show isn't animated digitally. Starting in the 14th season they changed from hand inked to digitally inked. The show has always been drawn by hand.
Okay then, that's what i mean, happy?

I can't understand the logic here saying it isn't hd. I mean it isn't like this is some POS actually shot or rendered in 480i (like that abomination Inland Empire). It is cel animation. So unless they actually went cel to 480i direct, it will benefit from a HD release - if they go back to the film source

Eh...for me personally, The Simpsons ended right around Season 8 (with the occasional decent one every now and then since). I'd be fine with re-buying those seasons on BD, but I can't imagine that the early years will look that much better than they already do on regular DVD, picture quality-wise.

I assume the Blu-ray will be nothing more than an upconvert. Fox has already done a television release like that, where the "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" BD was a mere upconvert.

Season 13 also happens to be one of the worst seasons in the show's history, so I am undecided on picking it up.

+1!

Can't believe how much hate there is towards the later seasons - even from the fans! The worst episode is supposed to be "Kill the Alligator and Run".. Never thought about that so rewatched it yesterday and kinda liked it lol!

Exactly... added to this, the review for season 20 says that the pre-HD episodes look like DVD upconverts, and the 'printed film format' as stated on IMDb is "VIDEO (NTSC)". They'd need to go back to the film negatives to make it HD, and I doubt they will, and the style of animation will look quite good on DVD anyway. The audio will probably be the only real upgrade.

All this is kind of moot anyway for me since I decided to stop buying at season 10... the shows 'golden era' and all the classics I grew up with are enough for me

Haha yeah! Its funny how some people will actually dislike you just because you dont hate certain episodes.. I say bullcrap! Even most of the worst Simpsons episodes are still very entertaining!

And Kill the Aligator and Run was quite funny too.. Have a hard time figuring out why it is so incredibly bad

The style of humor changed greatly in the seasons headed by Mike Scully, with more of a focus on physical sight gags and random plotlines. I guess the show was not awful during those down seasons (largely from seasons 10 to 16), but it is just not the same show as the golden age of the Simpsons.

When you move to digital ink and paint, the resolution is locked in. When drawings are inked and painted by hand on cels and filmed, this film is analog and high resolution. That film can be rescanned later to achieve digital HD. Season 14~19 of this show will NEVER be truly HD, because the ink/paint was done digitally. Season 1~13 were animated on cels and filmed, and so long as the film can be dug up, can be remastered to digital HD.

And just because something is animated by hand, traditional animation, doesn't mean it's not animated digitally. See, there are two words which can be used to describe how things are animated. Digital and analog. Digital does not mean the same as "computer does everything", it just means that the animation is digital rather than analog.

Do people really not understand that cel animation on film can be rescanned in HD? Season 1~13 were on cels and can be remastered to HD if original film can be unarchived. Seasons 14 and beyond were digital. This is why the episodes on the season 20 set before the switch to HD are not as impressive. They cannot "remaster" those episodes to look good in HD. They were created at 480p and that's all they'll ever be. Seasons 13 and before, however, were animated in an analog medium and CAN be remastered to HD.

But even if they DON'T remaster, BD will still look better than the DVD edition. Higher bitrate, less compression artifacts, and better colors. Not to mention lossless audio.

Looks like fox is only putting out its tv blus out in region A. I hope season 13 is not locked like season 20.
