David Fincher To Tackle Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea Remake

A while back, Disney scrapped Terminator Salvation director McG's darker version of Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. Now Disney's talking with a new director, David Fincher of Fight Club and Se7en. His oeuvre ain't sunshine and rainbows.

According to THR, Fincher got the gig this winter by approaching Disney about directing "a four-quadrant tentpole movie." Also, Bourne Ultimatum writer Scott Z. Burns will pen the script. Verne's 1869 novel is in public domain, but Disney is turning to the book once again as part of an initiative to resurrect established properties (see: Tron Legacy, Race To Witch Mountain ). It appears that Disney is capitalizing on the nostalgia of their 1954 version starring Kirk Douglas.

The last time we saw Captain Nemo in a big-ticket blockbuster was 2003's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, in which he practiced some fancy kung-fu. I doubt that Nemo's close combat expertise will make Fincher's cut, but hey, at least we won't have Drew Barrymore tearing through the Nautilus on a dirt bike.

UPDATE 5/16/10: Also, how will Disney's adaptation fare given that Fox is making their own version of 20,000 Leagues with Ridley and Tony Scott producing, Clash of The Titans writer Travis Beacham on scripts, and Wanted's Timur Bekmambetov in talks to direct? Oh, public domain!

With McG doing it I was mildly interested. Now with 'Fincher' doing it...I will be there with bells on.

I'm very interested to see how this go and to see who ends up getting cast in it. Probably end up with Captain Brad Pitt.

My thoughts excactly!Might actually be worth seeing now If nothing else,it will certainly be a nicely shot movie.Think Fincher is the best director in hollywood now. After se7en and fightclub and The game-although abit flawed-I thought he would be the new Kubrick.Maybe not,but he has an impressive resume.

Any news on the date?

I'm a big fan of the 1954 (?) Disney version, but I wouldn't mind seeing what is possible with modern CGI, if it is a quality effort.

Update: Roland Emerich has taken the helm.. jk

-as long as they don't put Johny Depp in this I'm all for it. I loved the original.

So who should be Captain Nemo and who should be Ned?

This is very intriguing. I was all for Nemo in PotC 4 but he got dropped. 20,000 is one of my favorite books of all time.

Default Sean Bailey: David Fincher Believes ‘20,000 Leagues’ Will Be His ‘Empire Strikes Back

Quote:
While at Comic-Con, I had a chance to ask producer turned Disney President of Production Sean Bailey about the recently announced David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club) helmed 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Find out what Bailey said after the jump.

Quote:
I’m really excited. One of the great benefits of this job is I get to meet with filmmakers who I tremendously admire. So to be able to sit down with David and have David say, “Look, I’ve never really thought about Disney before, but I really want to try to do my Empire Strikes Back. And I think 20,000 Leagues is the title.” It’s a thrilling conversation to be in. So we had a lot of conversations about what we viewed as Disney, and what David obviously so brilliantly pushes for in his movies. And the fact that we were able to kind of align those two goals is…I have been really excited about it. … It’s a bold, you know, Fincher-esque take. It’s a bold, aggressive…It’s got some of the characters from the original. It’s got Land, it’s got Aronnax. It’s got Nemo, of course. But it’s kind of a bold way in.
Excited yet? I know I am. Look for my full interview with Bailey later this week.

Talking to MTV at Comic-Con, Fincher described the film as “a gigantic steampunk science fiction movie from 1873.”

Fincher's 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA To Be 70% CG?

Wow. Seventy percent is a hefty number and if David Fincher can pull off that amount of CG in a compelling way (he certainly has the credentials) than 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA should be an amazing movie.

Here's what Fincher had to say recently on the matter: "I would love to to something like that. I would love to do something probably more like Avatar than Tintin. I like the idea of something that is a little more… complicated. I love the idea of a ‘cartoon’, but I would like it to be sort of very, very dense. And, in fact, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea will be probably 70% CG. [...] I love motion capture and think it’s only in its infancy, and eventually there won’t be a difference between motion capture and acting. Because that’s all motion capture is, is being able to capture acting."

Can't wait to see some first looks from this project! I'm a big fan of Fincher and all of this in 3D (especially the fact that it will be underwater) is going to be massive.

70% really is a hefty number. Fincher already uses VFX in a lot f his movies for aesthetic purposes mostly, so this will be interesting.

i imagine it will be something akin to Avatar with a live action cast in a mostly CG enviroment. i think Fincher is someone who could pull it off.

Fincher is looking to re-team with Pitt in the role of Ned for this.

This sounds like it could be very interesting, if it wasn't for Disney I would be more excited. Seems like they would be more likely to keep Fincher on a short leash. An intense adult oriented approach could give this project a nice flair but we already know that's not what's going to happen.

I don't want it to take precedence over the Dragon Tattoo sequels however. Those stories are far more deserving to be told.

Hope this gets off the ground and that Disney gives Fincher the control over the project he deserves. I've been waiting for this one for a long time.

Fincher is my favourite director but i really hope this does not get made.I don't want to see a movie that has been made 100 times.Hopefully a girl with dragon tattoo sequel or something new from him.
