Default David Fincher's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Hey,

Don't know about you but McG is helming this project. Not a big fan of his work.

Check it out.

Quote:
The script for the upcoming McG directed 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea remake was originally written by Bill Marsilii (Deja Vu) and Justin Marks (Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li). But today we learn from The Hollywood Reporter that Oscar-nominated screenwriter Randall Wallace (Braveheart, Pearl Harbor), has been brought on to rewrite Disney’s update of the classic Jules Verne tale.

THR reports that Wallace’s rewrite aims to focus (the newly titled) Captain Nemo: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea on:

“the origin of Captain Nemo and his submarine warship, the Nautilus. Nemo is a mysterious but noble antagonist in the book, a scientific genius with a thirst for knowledge and a desire for revenge against the forces of imperialism.”

A lesser-known sequel to Nemo was later written by Jules Verne called The Mysterious Island, which revealed Captain Nemo as an Indian Prince who took part in a rebellion and lost his wife and children. It is currently unknown just how close Disney will stick to this character backstory (if they do at all), but Wallace’s rewrite will reportedly make the film “decidedly action-adventure.”

With the success Disney has had with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, I am not surprised that’s the route they want to take with Nemo…

With the type of story that the original 20,000 Leagues is, I can definitely see the appeal for Disney to turn it into a modern day big-budget action-adventure movie. The issues with Hollywood remaking yet another project aside, 20,000 Leagues has both the decades-old story and the modern-day special effects to merge together. I can see this one being a big hit at the box-office if it’s done right.

There’s no word on WHY Wallace was brought on to rewrite Nemo, so that just leaves us all to speculate.

Captain Nemo: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is currently in pre-production and doesn’t have a release date as of yet.

UPDATE:

According to THR, Fincher got the gig this winter by approaching Disney about directing "a four-quadrant tentpole movie." Also, Bourne Ultimatum writer Scott Z. Burns will pen the script. Verne's 1869 novel is in public domain, but Disney is turning to the book once again as part of an initiative to resurrect established properties (see: Tron Legacy, Race To Witch Mountain ). It appears that Disney is capitalizing on the nostalgia of their 1954 version starring Kirk Douglas.

The last time we saw Captain Nemo in a big-ticket blockbuster was 2003's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, in which he practiced some fancy kung-fu. I doubt that Nemo's close combat expertise will make Fincher's cut, but hey, at least we won't have Drew Barrymore tearing through the Nautilus on a dirt bike.

UPDATE 5/16/10: Also, how will Disney's adaptation fare given that Fox is making their own version of 20,000 Leagues with Ridley and Tony Scott producing, Clash of The Titans writer Travis Beacham on scripts, and Wanted's Timur Bekmambetov in talks to direct? Oh, public domain!

Enjoy.

Not a huge fan of McG either, but I might still check this out. Used to be one of my fave movies when I was a kid, wore out that old VHS Guess we'll have to keep an eye on it and see what happens. Thanks for the info.

I don't know. Is there anyone one out there that can sing "Whale of a Tale" like Kirk Douglas? This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. The cast was terrific, and the film very enjoyable. I will watch this one closely. Hope they do right by it.

I was affraid this day would come. Disney's version does'nt need to be remade. It is a perfectly crafted classic, IMO. I'm staying away from this and pretend it never happend. Kinda like the Psycho remake...why?

I doubt that the McG version wil lactualy have the song. Well I am a bit torn on this one, love the original, a real classic for the ages yet I might like to see it re-done with all the special effects we now have. As long as they make a good story and don't try to turn it into a b@stard version of what Jules verne did, adding sex and aliens from another planet and what ever other crap Hollycrap seem to come up at time to destroy a good book.

I can already hear the rumors, Bale as Nemo

Hollywood casting for the 21st century trying to pretend they are giving edge to old stale stories

Ned Land (played by Kirk Douglas) now will be played by Shia Leboeuf

Captain Nemo (played by James Mason) now will be played by Samuel L Jackson (make sense who else to play a pissed off son of a b@tch that want's to strike revenge on the whole world.

Professor Pierre Aronnax (played by Paul Lukas) now will be played by Christian Bale, we can't have average looking characters in 21st century Hollywood.

Conseil (played by Peter Lorre) now played by Megan Fox, we need sex and a love interest for Shia, what the hell was Jules Verne thinking not having a beautiful girl in his story, must be the worst writer in history.

For the story, aliens crashed landed somewhere and Samuel Jackson as the scientific genius Nemo (why is that so hard to believe?) will be able to built a submarine with stealth technology and that can also transform into a huge flying ship. The story will take place in the near future, again what the heck was Jules Verne thinking, setting this up in the 1870's, guy was nuts or what? There will be a budget of 600 Millions for explosion and we have to setup a huge final battle where the aliens are back on Earth and want to conquer it but Nemo, now seeing how wrong he was will save the world with his lone submarine/airship against 400 millions aliens ships.

Blockbuster galore, see Verne knew nothing, we know how to make a cool movie.

Did McG hire Michael Bay to co-direct?

Isn't it a tad bit over the line with the money spent on this project with McG Helming this project.

I think its way too much I don't expect much of it.

Ditto. I don't know you can improve the original. They sure didn't with "Race to Witch Mountain."

I don't like the idea of remaking this. It would be better if they would do a high quality blu-ray conversion of the original.

In addition to the other material brought up on this forum, Disney will find a way to bring Jack Sparrow into this movie. Miley Cyrus will sing "Whale of a Tale" with a hip-hop beat.

+2 Agree, Disney should leave this classic film alone and release it on BLU. Besides, there have been other remakes and none of them hold a candle to the original.
