New 50" 1080p ideas?

I have a lovely Panasonic LCD 50" that is about 4+ years old. It plays at 1080i and looks fine, but it doesn't look as good as the tv's at Best Buy with Blue Ray. I am using the HDMI connection. I have the Sony ??300 player, the new one (the precise number escapes me), and when I try and set it for 1080p instead of 1080i the tv goes out, I am told it cannot play at thsi setting. WHat 50" LCD ( I am not fond of Plazma) for under $2000, looks good, thank you in advance for your time.

Johnny the Samsung 5084 is selling around 2450.00 to 2850.00 online.If that Display catches your eye I would advise taking a stroll to CC on Black Friday because they will knock some major bucs off there current price.
