I'm going to review to very different WWII films, both foreign.
KATYN (2007) Katyn is a 2007 Polish film by the world famous Polish director, Andrzej Wajda (winner of the lifetime achievement award Oscar in 2000). Wajda's father was also a Polish officer who was executed and buried in a mass grave by the Russians in the Katyn Forest. Seeing this film had some special meaning for me being a 3rd generation Polish American (my grandparents came from Krakow, where part of the film takes place, and Warsaw) Catholic. Poland is a very Catholic country (as is Chicago where I grew up; having the largest Polish population in the world outside of Poland) and even though many films have dealt with the Holocaust (and the mass extermination of Jews), part of which have taken place in the Warsaw Ghetto, I am not aware of any films which have dealt with the mass extermination of Poland's largely Catholic intelligentsia in WWII. The film opens showing an East/West bridge with civilians running from the advancing Germans in the West. Then the camera slowly pans to the right and we see civilians running from the East, escaping the advancing Soviet army. Thus begins the partition of Poland in 1939. The Polish army sadly laid down their arms before the advancing Soviet army thinking that they were going to be rescued from the German army. Sadly, the Poles were not aware of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact signed between the Germans and the Russians on August 24, 1939. The film shows that it was not only the Russians and their NKVD (People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs) who played a part in the mass extermination of Poland's finest minds but that the Germans participated too [Show spoiler] The film contains 2 pieces of actual film footage of the mass graves found in the Katyn Forest, one released by the Germans blaming the Russians for the massacre and footage from the Russians blaming the Germans later on. The film ends showing a portrayal of Polish officers being executed by the NKVD and then being buried in a mass grave.Still, this film is not just about the Katyn Massacre because Wajda has, throughout his film career, been a Polish nationalist. First, even though the 22,000 massacred might seem like a very small number in comparison to the 6,000,000 Jews who died in the Holocaust, Poland is still very much haunted by this event. Poland has also been torn apart by both Socialist and Communist ideologies since the beginning of WWII and Wajda is trying to warn the Polish people, those he intended this film to reach, of the lies which can be promulgated by any one political train of thought. The film is also about dashed hopes; the film covers the period 1939-45, including Poland being freed from German Occupation by the Soviet Army. When the war ended, the Polish people had hoped their government in exile would return and that Poland would be a nation again. That didn't happen because Poland would be dominated by the Soviet Union for many decades to follow. This is depicted in two scenes, one where a young Polish patriot and future college student dies (with so much of his future before him) and where a young lady has her hair cut off in a kind of Antigone. STORY: 5/5 PQ: 4.5/5 AQ: 4/5 REGION FREE FOR FILM AND SUPPLEMENTS ARE PAL (I Need to get a region free player soon) THE DOWNFALL OF BERLIN ANONYMA (Anonyma - Eine Frau in Berlin 2008) THE COVER OF THE BD AND THE OPENING SCREEN ARE MISLEADING, SUGGESTING THERE IS BOTH GROUND AND AERIAL COMBAT, ETC. IN THE FILM. THERE ISN'T ANY; IN FACT, THERE IS VERY LITTLE COMBAT IN THIS FILM. This film, directed by Max Farberbock, covers the period from April 20 to June 22, 1945 in a part of Berlin occupied by the Red Army. It is an account of the experiences of Marta Hillers, a minor propagandist who had worked on brochures for the education of German youth for the Third Reich. It is based on a book entitled A Woman in Berlin (Eine Frau in Berlin) which was initially published in the U.S. in 1954 by Kurt Marek but has more recently been a bestseller in Germany. During the period when the Red Army captured Berlin, one of the largest incidents of mass rape took place. Soviet troops reportedly raped German women and girls as young as 8 years old. Estimates of the total number of victims range from tens of thousands to two million. So this is at least the historical and factual context in which the movie is set. This film is basically about women and what they had to do to survive when the war was lost. It does, on the otherhand, show how these same women acted while Germany was victorious, which might cause one to not have much sympathy for them! This was a disturbing film for me to watch, just like KATYN was, but for a different reason. I'm bothered when women are treated brutally and especially raped, even in film. However, the rapes aren't overly graphic but you should be aware there is some nudity in the film. Nina Hoss is simply fantastic playing Anonyma (Marta Hillers) and Yevgeni Sidikhin is likewise as good playing Major Andreij Rybkin, the Russian officer Hillers eventually develops a close relationship in order to survive. The movie starts off with rapes being the dominant theme but eventually, Hillers grows fond, even falls in love with the Russian officer. Story: 4/5 PQ: 4.5/5 AQ: 4/5 REGION FREE FOR FILM; SUPPLEMENTS ARE PAL (Using my Panasonic DMP-BD30, I had to step forward twice to get to the opening screen because previous items are PAL). I didn't have to select anything for ENGLISH subtitles. STILL TO WATCH: FLAME AND CITRON (Flammen & Citronen - 2008), a Danish film set in WWII. |

Run Lola Run - 3.5/5
Pretty cool movie, but didn't quite live up to the hype. Franka Potente was great, I love her! Everyone did a good job, and the movie was interesting, had some pretty funny parts too. And it had a cool soundtrack to go with the pace of the movie. I'd recommend it |

I mentioned The Island on Bird Street a couple days ago. I think you might really appreciate it because of the above bolded lines. From Netflix.... Amidst the Nazi occupation of Poland, 11-year old Alex (Jordan Kiziuk) is separated from his family and finds shelter in an abandoned house. Kept company by a mouse and comforted by his father's (Patrick Bergin) promise to find him, Alex finds strength by reading Robinson Crusoe. With a loft as his secret-hideaway home base, Alex puts his survival skills to the test while dodging the Nazis. This award-winning drama is based on a true story. And most of the film takes place after the ghetto has been "evacuated", so he is surviving solo. |

Robin Hood: Men in Tights
PQ - 3.5 AQ - 3.5 Film - 4.5 It's been quite some time since I've seen this, but it still stands as my favorite Robin Hood film. Take that as a knock on the previous ones if you will, but it is more of a compliment to this well done spoof by Mel Brooks than anything else. Some may disagree on the quality of this movie, but it was always one of my favorite Mel Brooks films. It's cameo list is also pretty impressive, including the likes of Dom DeLuise, Dick Van Patton, and Patrick Stewart, along with Mel Brooks himself of course. While this isn't quite up there with his very best (Spaceballs), it is still a very entertaining spoof that still held up well for me today. Robin Hood: Men in Tights receives a 4.5/5 from me. This movie won't wow you on Blu-ray, but it is still presented solidly by Fox for a 17 year old spoof comedy. The movie still has some specks and such, most noticeable near the beginning and end of the film, but it doesn't become distracting. Overall, the movie is still pleasing on the eyes and earns a 3.5 for PQ. This is still easily the best the film as ever looked at home. Robin Hood: Men in Tights actually sounded somewhat better than I expected it to since it's an old movie, providing solid motion through the soundstage throughout the film. The opening credits with arrows being shot throughout is the best example of this. The Loxley Hall scene also provides some nice bass, although rare throughout the movie, is still worth noting for a scene. While this still won't of course measure up to most new films nowadays of course, this is still a solid listen for the movie and earns a 3.5 in AQ. |

1. The Messenger - Jhiggy hit the nail on the head on this one. I can't really say much more about it. 2. District 9 - I know many people wouldn't agree, but I still tremendously enjoy this one every time I watch it. 3. A Serious Man - Definitely one of the Coen Brothers better works. Out of their whole filmography, I would rate this at number 3 behind No Country and The Big Lebowski. It's probably the most layered film that I've watched recently. I'm sure many people will remember the thread discussing the... uh, interesting theories behind it. I won't say much more. ![]() 4. A Single Man - I absolutely loved Colin Firth's performance. I think it was the best performance from last year. I don't care what anyone's sexual orientation is, the story should be able to reach an emotional connection with everyone. I found it to be a beautiful story accompanied with an excellent soundtrack and cinematography. 5. Up - I think the first 15 minutes is the best that Pixar have ever done. A lot of people think it gets generic after that but I disagree. The setting is their most interesting to date and these characters had the best character development since Toy Story, in my opinion. I think this film had the perfect balance of fun that we've come to love from Pixar while dealing with the bigger issues of life. There are a few films that I haven't seen from last year, most notably the foreign film flicks. I have yet to see The White Ribbon or The Secret in Their Eyes. What would your Top 5 be? |

Nice list! I have yet to see A Serious Man & A Simple Man but they are in my Netflix Que. Def looking foward to seeing them after all the good things I've heard especially about Firth's performance.
1. Up in the Air I absolutely loved this film. I am a big fan of Clooney and Farmiga. Kendrick did excellent as well. I was very surprised this film did not win an Oscar. I loved the story and all that was involved in the film. 2. Crazy Heart I really enjoyed this film a great deal. I know many believe it was not that great and yes this story has been done before but sometimes it's good to see/read a story but with different characters, especially if it involves Jeff Bridges. Maggie did excellent in this as well. 3. Brothers Great acting in this. Very impressed with Toby's performance, as well as the rest of the cast. I do not watch a great amount of films where I think the ENTIRE cast is great, but in this I truly believed they all were. The story is good, maybe could have been better, but I loved this any way. I really felt for the entire family and what they went through. 4. The Messenger Like you said Jhiggy said it all. Though I did not find it as good as you and he did, but I still agree it was one of the best of 09 hands down. Ben Foster is an excellent actor and I love his work. 5. Avatar Don't think I'm stupid for liking this, but I really enjoyed this. I liked the story and yes this has been done before. It def reminded me of Dances with Wolves, but I did not care. I loved that film and I loved this one. Yes it was over-hyped and I do not know how James does it every time but he is a genius. btw Up would have come next. ![]() Last edited by JLant19; 06-03-2010 at 06:34 PM. |

Leap Year(Netflix Rental)
Film: 2/5 This was a boring film. It never caught my attention. The only thing that did was John Lithgow(good to see him). Usually I enjoy Amy Adams but I didn't in this. Alice in Wonderland(Netflix Rental) Film: 2/5 Again it was boring to me. Never could get into it. Some of the main characters I just couldn't appreciate. But the visuals were nice, as usual with a Burton Film. Idk I just didn't like it. |

1. The Road - I have seen this movie three times now and the movie just gets me all the time.
2. Inglorious Basterds - The definition of an excellent movie that is a blast to watch. 3. Moon - Seen it about 5 times and just love it more and more. Plus Sam Rockwell is the man. 4. Fantastic Mr. Fox - Didn't expect much from this, but I do like Wes Anderson and after watching it, I thought it was his second best behind Royal. **I would have put either Gomorrah and Hunger in here, but they technically were released in 2008.** 5. Antichrist - One of the most beautifully shot/messed up movies I have seen. I loved it. You'll love it or hate it. There seems to be no medium with it. Not to forget and that I also really, really like.... (500) Days of Summer, Up in the Air, and Up, House of the Devil, District 9, Black Dynamite, Observe and Report, and The Messenger. Still have not seen.... White Ribbon, Mother, A Prophet, A Single Man, Avatar (not sure I want to see this or not), Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, etc... King Kong(Netflix Rental)
First off, I want to thank jhiggy for putting me on to this film. I read what he said about this on numerous occasions and I finally gave it a look. Thanks man. Film: 4.5/5 Yea it is a long film but it is a great one. I really loved the first hour of this film. I have to disagree with people who believe Jack Black was miscast. He did a fantastic job. Naomi did so as well. It was fun to see Colin Hanks in this, I like him as an actor. |
