Fans for Home theatre... - Blu-ray Forum

WOW does my 805 get HOT! As you can see in this picture my setup for my audio rack, What I want to do is mount some 120mm + fans on either side of the middle support to circulate air around my 805 (plus possibly for the top rack with the PS3 and Xbox and Wii (which surprisingly gets hot even when in standby).

My question is two fold. Does anyone know of anyplace or anywhere on the net (reputable sites only please) that sell 120mm or larger fans that run on AC? I know how to and can take standard PC case fans and rewire them to an AC adapter to change from AC to DC volts. But I don't want to if at all possible.

The second question is do they have the ability to run multiple fans off one AC line or will each fan have one plug only and have to go into a single outlet space. I will need two at least and possibly four.

The only other stipulation I have is that the fans have to be under 50 dB to be as quiet at the other components when at idle. The lower the dB the better.

My 805 gets warm, but certainly not HOT! I'm sure why yours would get so hot as it seems to have plenty of ventilation....

What volume do you playback at (absolute), and what kind of setup are you driving??? 5.1 or 7.1?

Depending on the movie 5.1 to 7.1. But everything is plugged into my receiver and it is on most of the day between my kids and my wife and I watching TV or movies, playing games or listening to music. The volume varies based on what I am doing. But typically when I am using it, it is set around -15.0 to -10.0 But of course for when the kids are watching something it is a lot softer. I don't know why but I love it loud!

I have the same problem with my Yamaha HTR-5890. I am going to do the same thing you are but have not had to time to build the san system. I went to frozencpu.com and they sell a DC to AV converter that will support 4-Pin Molex fans and its only $13. I plan of linking them together up to the amount of amps it can handle. That depends on the fan you are going to use. They also have a large variety of fan sizes, and speeds. The link will take you to the AC to DC converter. Let me know how it works out with your setup. Hope this helps.

id get this fan, i think its new never seen it before.. it moves 110.3CFM and is only 37.8Db AND its only $9.99 CAD

or you can go the ball bearing Panaflo that moves 104cfm but its $26.46CAD

Put the 805 at the top and don't put anything on top of it. That should help cool it off.

If the amp is getting irregularly hot, check that your speakers are correctly matched to your amp and that they are not of a lower impedance than specified by your amp.

If you run your amp with speakers that are stated by the specs, it doesn't matter if you push it hard, it shouldn't get unnecessarily hot unless your environment cannot displace the heat that it is generating.

You already have quite an open rack, what is your room's ambient temperature and what's the humidity?

If your environment cannot displace the heat, fans won't help since you'll just be pushing hot air around rather and pushing cool air to replace the hot air.

The other thing is it might not be a good idea to put it right on the top, remember, heat rises, so if it's on the top, all the heat from the other devices underneath it (i.e. 360, PS3) will go up and add to the heat that your receiver is already generating.

Perhaps check amazon.com, they seel fans as well.

Heat won't be your only problem. These man made machines release alot of volatile organic chemcials or fumes into the air that's pretty poisonous. What you'll need, in addition to the fans, are some sort of air cleaners or good ventillation. Well, Sony's more a green company and is working on ridding of fame retardants and PVC.

Nice setup, by the way. It also looks very clean, organized, and unpretentious. I like that.

Mine gets very warm. I cant imagine yours would be all that different than anyone elses 805. Onkyo made them to run hot and you have plenty of ventilation there. If our units start going out due to over heating, then I would say yes there is a problem, but otherwise I wouldn't worry about it as it was designed to perform under these conditions and the manual stresses this fact. Great Receiver, awsome sound.

for my set-up I used four 3 1/2" pc fans rated at .14 amps each at 12volts. I purchased a 3 amp 12 volt power supply off ebay and used a 25-ohm Rheostat from radio shack to control speed/noise. Works great!

Onkyos made to run hot is the understatement of the day.

But I agree unless you are getting errors I would not worry about it.

Onkyos run substantially hotter than the Integra line. Integra is basically the cadillac of onkyos with hand-selected components...something they built into it must help it run cooler too because my Integra DTR-6.8 (cousin of the onkyo 605) runs way cooler than any Onkyos I've felt.

As for 120mm fans... go with a Panaflo. They sell them at frozencpu.com (good site I've also used it before on several occasions) as linked above by the other poster. Panaflo 120mm's are some of the strongest and quietest fans out there for the size range. Very nice, heavy duty and QUIET! You will be impressed with the quality when you see em. Trust me...

Where did you hear that?? I'm no electronics expert nor do I have a PHD, but I am a chemist by trade and I have never heard of any poisonous or volatile organic compounds in consumer electronics. As far as I know, electronics and heavy machinery usually only create a very small amount of ozone which can hardly be considered toxic.

2) HOLD down the "Display" button and press "Standby" button once.
3) Release the "Display" button.
4) Now press the "Tone" button once
5) The temperature in Celsius will be displayed. These temperatures are being displayed in real time so you can leave this info on display for as long as you want to monitor the receivers temp.

I am sure that new electronics smell is bad for you, you wouldnt breathe burning plastic would you? So when the receiver is hot to the touch its pretty close to burning and it does emit a smell.

Furthermore i am sure everything in life in way or another is bad for you. I am looking for someone down the road to say those door alarm things in the front of stores cause cancer. I am sure they are safe, but think about it. Those poor old folks at Wal-Mart are shortening their life expectancy by standing by them for 8 hours ...lol

I know that certain EXIT signs have radioactive material in them so they glow when the power goes out. look on the bottom of a few exit signs and probably 1 out of 4 will have the radioactive symbol on it.
