i'm really really really hoping he saw it twice and this is his score for the second viewing... really really hoping because if he voted before seeing the film... that's just pathetic.

It was by mistake.
I wanted to vote 4.

P.S. Oh, and one more think, I wanted to say that making mean and aggressive assumptions about what a person did or what he is is not a good idea. (only because he didnt quite enjoy TS 3)/.
In the same manner I could make assumtions of why it is that you are so aggresive of someone who didnt enjoy what you enjoyed.

A Serious Man

Just watched this this night, I liked it. Black humour as the Coen Brothers does best. But there's no real plot to this movie, which is fine but I just thought it had one . Also I guess you have to know alot about the jewish culture or be one yourself to fully understand it, so I checked IMDb and the special features and it made more sense. I thought it had some hilarious moments, like the asian student made me laugh the most. But I also found myself to be more annoyed by the weak and pathetic lead as the movie went on, but not much though. Features a great cast, funny writing, some things hard to understand, but rent it if you like the Coens.

I really enjoy this film. I believe I gave it 3 1/2 stars (out of 4). Some critics thought it was too sappy and disconnected, but I liked it quite a bit. Doesn't hurt that most of my family is from Savannah.

Yea I guess so. The messes up the rating system when people do that though because we dont get the fair and real rating of the film. I wish people would vote after they see the films and give a true vote and base it off hate or because they didnt like the idea of the film goin in or a peticular actor. Watch the film first then vote, if u cant do that then why bother goin into the thread? Got Em!!

I would point out one thing: Yes Daniel Plainview's prime motivation is greed, but

[Show spoiler] at the same time, like all human beings, he has a conscience, at it continuously tortures him throughout the film. Example: leaving the boy on the train. He didn't do that effortlessly. He wept/sobbed. He continuously asked "how big is his room?" (the son). Yes, he was trying to absolve his own guilt, but at the same time, his conscience was eating him alive. And the other example of his conscience torturing him is the church sequence: notice how DDL goes from "this is a f&*king joke" mode (when Eli talks about blood, Jesus, etc), but then DDL goes into "I'm a horrible person" mode (when Eli mentions the son). DDL's conscience is eating him again. His jaw even quivers (if you watch close) when Eli says "you have abandoned your child" (the first time).

That's one of the reasons this character is so powerful: Yes, he's a greed-driven monster, but at the same time, he's tortured by his conscience - a universal attribute of any human - whether he likes it or not

but what he does makes sense. sure, it's rough and maybe not the best way to go about things but

[Show spoiler]he wanted his son to get help. he (DDL) didn't know how to communicate with his son being deaf, so what else was there to do?

i also could tell his conscious was eating away at him when he talks about

[Show spoiler]hating men so much and how all he sees are their negatives, because he knows he has them too and i think that's why he is what he is and does what he does, because he can't live with that fact

all day i've been thinking of favorite films and while i don't know where it is yet on my list, it certainly is up there. i know it's in the top 15, hell, maybe even top 10. not sure yet, but definitely one of my best blind buys.

Although I don't always agree with you, I think you have good taste. As such, I'd be very interested to see your top 15.

i know this isn't the right thread for this type of thing, but here's my Top 5

note: there are A LOT of classics that i have not seen yet and didn't really start watching films until about the age of 12 (everything before that was pretty much just constantly watching Toy Story, The Lion King and Jurassic Park )

1. Fight Club
2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
3. Zodiac
4. There Will Be Blood
5. The Blair Witch Project

i feel fairly confident that these 5 would always be here (top 2 have never moved since their first viewings respectively). after that, i honestly don't think i've seen enough films yet to complete the 15 and feel content with it.

notable favorites though: Blow, Donnie Darko, The Lion King, Toy Story, Jurassic Park, Michael Clayton, The Rules of Attraction, The Last Kiss, Garden State, Boogie Nights, Reign Over Me, Dumb and Dumber and many more. but the five mentioned above are truly, truly absolute favorites and films that are not only personal favorites for respective reasons, but films i believe where the acting, directing, story and emotion shown is unrivaled.

I completely agree with you, but there is unfortunately no way to really stop it.

Had nothing to do with you liking Toy Story 3 or not; it was a legit question that I wanted to know, not a "mean and aggressive assumption".

Nice! Those are obviously not my selections but I like your variety. I wouldn't be so certain your top 5 won't change--there are so many great movies out there.

Couldnt finish it.

Not because of the movie, but because of the music. To be fair, the score actually was achieving its goal, which is to stress the viewer out and ratchet up the intensity. My problem (and its MY problem) is that I cant tolerate relentless, repetative, electronic THROB music. I dont know if it was House, or Dance or what style it was, but for me its like nails on a chalkboard.

Made it 20 minutes in before I pulled the plug. It seemed like I would have enjoyed the film if it werent for that.

You're not missing much

I saw it recently after hearing a lot of great things, and for me it didn't live up to the hype. Surfdude agreed as well. I think it's kinda cool, but nothin more than that. Franke Potente helped me enjoy it more
