I'm watching the new disc right now...........yes that Arnold shirt scene is bad looking. Everything in the film before that doesn't look that bad.

Watching the new edition of Predator right now, and I'm like Jesse, "WTF?!!" . I'm not liking the noise reduction. I really like the grain of the original blu-ray version of Predator. Would like to do a side by side comparison of these two. I really think the Director should be involved in the process of remastering. Like another reviewer said I'm kinda worried about Alien Quadrilogy now....

Would like to add in the beginning of the movie when Dillon and Dutch are face to face Dillon's face doesn't even look real, almost plastic....

I'm scared shitless about the "fixing" FOX may give to Aliens

I've compared several screenshots on my television, and you're correct that it's much different than viewing them on a computer display. But, the grain pattern on the original release is so heavy and pixelated, it's nearly impossible to discern it from the fine details that would otherwise be there. DNR can absolutely scrub out these details, but I think the 2008 release does a great job of masking the fact that in most cases those fine of details were never there to begin with; just grain, and pixelation.

I'm not saying I prefer the DNR look; I'd much preferred they'd have left the grain in. But I'm not seeing many instances of a detail actually being lost in this new transfer. Unless you make the leap of faith and assume that giant spec of grain is actually a human pore.

WHAT! WTF! Don't whisper that thought. Alien and Aliens better be perfect. Now I won't be able to sleep tonight or any other till the Alien set is out.

hey, if you want to get it whose stopping you?

Hey, Niels. I don't believe anyone else answered you on this one.

In this post (click on the spoiler):

I used a screen from this new blu-ray edition and highlighted the edge enhancement. Hope that helps!

And actually, if you really look close at the waterline, you'll notice where it starts and stops on either side of the chopper.

I was mistaken and didn't see the halo around the chopper earlier; it's quite subdued due to the sky. The white line at the horizon though is in the original as well, buried behind grain and noise.

So they'll both be alive and kicking for 2000 more posts that will solve nothing.

I rewatched the original version again last night and looked closely at the grain situation and it is far worse than when I was just watching the movie and following the story. It's horrible. It's a terrible transfer with some nice shots that comprise 40% of the movie.

I doubt we'll see another movie that looks/looked this bad in theater or on Blu for a long time.

I think Fox thought if they didn't change/improve/modernize the picture enough that a lot of folks would think it wasn't enough of an upgrade.

It's sad we'll never get a 'perfect' version of this movie on Blu, but I'm thinking for $15 bucks and a free ticket i might enjoy this version more than the old.

I 'got' & understood OAR back in the 80s when everything was panned & scaned and I have been telling people about letterboxing and pillarboxing and lossless and restorations and grain, but the original release is terrible for whatever reasons and I think if seeing this version helps a lot of people appreciate the movie then that's good.

Really, if new Blu-ray owners put in the original version in their Blu-ray player they'd think the format was waaaay over-rated. They wouldn't want to read a manifesto on the budget and the film stock and the lighting and the zoomed in shots filling in for missing close-ups etc. They'd just think the film looks crappy. "It always looked that way."---isn't a great argument--even if it's true.

I do hope Cameron oversees Aliens and it gets the attention it deserves though.
A title on BD can only look as good as the source. It's as simple as that.

Quick question..

Is the AQ basically the same as the first release for those that have both?

I don't know what the big issue is. This is a matter of opinion. Some people like grain, others don't. You are not going to convice one camp or the other. There are now two versions of the film so pick whichever makes you happier.

You should add into the poll the option of buying both, just a thought.

and who cares which is better or worse, for $35 @ walmart you can get Commando\Predator combo and the new Ultimate Hunter Edition, now that is a damn good price IMO.

I'd buy this new edition just for the sake of having the option to watch either version. I just hate to give my money over to the studio and encourage this type of thing in the future. Not that me withholding buying a single copy of the movie is really going to say something to the studio either way though.

When the choice is between these two very flawed versions---preferring one over the other says nothing about your film fan credentials.

This is not between a beautiful true to film transfer with some grain and a DNR grainless abomination and then some folks are preferring the grain scrubbed version.

This is between two flawed versions and some prefer a brighter less muddy picture with DNR and others prefer a very grainy 'truer to the theater' version that's nowhere near perfect by any stretch.
Exactly! Well said.
