There's a weakness in your argument: Adam Tyner wrote the review for Predator:UE, while Chris Neilson handled Gladiator's. Also, if you read Neilson's review, he did include a few disclaimers, acknowledging that the Sapphire release of Galdiator suffered from "noticeable edge-enhancement, DNR and other digital manipulation of the image designed to minimize blemishes".

While I understand the purists, as I recalled movies back in the 80's were not shot in HD and movie theaters were not in HD. So what's the purpose of Blu-Ray if you want to see a movie exactly as it was show in theaters back in the 80's? If I want Predator to look exactly as it did in the 80's I might as well keep my 15 years old VHS tape....it looks exactly as it did in the 80's.

Now, you're making me yearn even more for Jaws on BD....I wait patiently for the day it is released (but it is sooo hard to wait for such a classic)

I'm sorry but this seems absurd to me because if I set my sharpness on 0 the picture (Pioneer plasma) becomes very soft. At maximum it is extremely sharp and doesn't add any noise.

Movies in the 80s were shot on film, which easily surpasses the resolution of Blu-Ray. Movies on VHS never looked anything like what you could watch in the theater.

It depends on your TV. I have mine set to zero and everything looks fine. I've helped a few friends calibrate their sets and had to set it higher.

Arnold is in the upcoming movie (pardon me, "film". My bad.) The Expendables this summer.

It plays in midnight movie houses and retro cinemas in L.A. 20 years ago or not, it's still a print struck form the negative, and the same as what played 20 years ago.

More combative questions?

: rotfl:

i LOVE how everyone who "thinks" HD is supposed to be clean and clear and pristine ignores films like "Miami Vice," which was 100% digital and full of noise. Done artistically and ON PURPOSE. HD doesn't mean video game. I wish people would take the time to LEARN the technologies instead of just posting inaccurate "facts" about it.

Why don't you then educate and inform, instead of ridicule?

Me? I've tried, but people just don't listen. So, next is ridicule, I guess?

Ditto with colorization with usually had the original B&W available included or elsewhere. And anamorphic had nothing to do with the restoration or presentation of a film beyond how it was encoded and flagged on the disc.
I owe you a beer, Cliff. Yes, this my point exactly.

The film purists are worried that the orginal, theatrical version of Predator (ie the original film) will be lost to the ravages of time.

But, aren't all these HD Masters saved somewhere ? I mean the pre-DNR master of the actual film ?

The purpose for me is the sound quality. I look for my older movies to sound better than they did, but still maintain a similar style that was used when it was shown. Just looking at some of my films I have on Blu-Ray like My Bloody Valentine (The original) sounds much better than it did before...I find the 2008 version of Predator to look fine. In fact, grain can sometimes add to the film and give it a more gritty atmosphere.

Movies are not shown in HD in theaters now. So I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. Movies shot on film (even the ones shot in the 80's) have more resolution than HD currently does.

Except those of us that wanted the extras (as well as an as-close-to-accurate representation of the intended look of the film) don't have a choice.
