Yea I always get it checked,,, But at what point can they still hide things.. Carfax only shows CLAIMS, If they have a friend in the business ( autobody mtor etc etc ) it would have never been claimed , thus never recorded..

And as far as getting it checked, all anyone can do is look underneath the car .. other than that everything will be internal.. And theres plenty of "Additives" ppl can use to bandaide problems

Honda Civic with an aftermarket exhaust and other "performance" upgrades? No chance I'd buy it. Too much risk of some jackass playing Vin Diesel on the gearbox. Unless it's an auto . . . Even then, though, it's suspect.

if you have $8,000 cash to drop regardless of your credit a bank / dealership would still give you a nice interest rate

I have 6K cash floating in the bank now that I could throw down on a car, and this person said they would take 6200 when I offere d it if it was good.. The best rate I found at ANY bank around here ( that our honda dealer goes through and including my credit union is 14.9% ) and thats with my 2002 diamante on trade in ( $3000 ) and 6K down.. Kia will finance anyone, but all there cars are ugly, and dont even get great mileage

So whats affordable , sporty , able to be modded down the road and reliable with good mileage? Honda.. I hate the look of the new civics, and the accords cost to much I need a co- signer.. at age 31.. this is pathetic

yea very true.. It sounded like an older lady when I talked to her but who knows if she had a young kid driving or what.. I LOVED the look of the 06-07 civic Si, but with the "Si" brand you should expect nothing less than a car beaten senseless.. Bt being a honda, I would imagine they could take beatings, and if something happened down the road It wouldnt be to expensive to fix.. ..

I dunno guys what do you think?

Who says it isn't Vin Diesel selling it, himself?

LOL, I couldn't resist. That sentence made me laugh.

Since I was 18, I've had loans out on fast cars. After spending who knows how much on interest, I've decided to get a cheap economy car and save up. The next car I buy will be with cash.

Now I know you want something fast, so my advice is to get a cheap, reliable daily driver and save up for your project car. I'm looking at getting something like a 98' Ford Contour (maybe even an SVT contour ). Contours are nice, comfy sedans that get great mileage and are dirt cheap! A 98' Contour with 70k or 80k miles generally goes for about $2,000 in my area. That's awesome for a car that gets around 30mpg and has 4 doors so I can fit a bunch of friends.

I suggest looking into something like that instead of paying 12 grand for a civic. And no, just because it's an SI doesn't mean it's been driven hard. Even if it has, it's a Honda. They run forever

I've had my share of buying used and off the Internet. Your father is right...you could be buying their problem. Why else would they be selling? Honda's are great cars. I currently own 2 and in the past have owned a total of 6. It's a basic Civic EX with some minor mods..mods that don't need require premium fuel though. So I doubt he's been consistent with that. I find it funny and completely unnessessary that he mentiones he uses premium gas, ALWAYS, but doesn't specify what kind of oil he puts in.

Do you have a personal mechanic you can take it to who can look over the car? Def Run the Carfax. It's not going to hurt to meet the guy in person and take it for a spin. Make sure the tranny shifts well. The price isn't bad. Personally I'd go with an RSX they are a little nicer and you can get them in a 6sp manual. Keep an eye out for the s2000 as well. They've dropped in value significantly over the past few years. You can literally get one for 10k now. Why get a Civic when you can have an S2000 for a few grand more? That might not be practical for your situation though. I've got one and love it. Hit me up if you have any questions.

Good luck.

I would ask to see the complete service record; his definition of regular oil changes may be different than yours. I wished that I had made the switch to full synthetic after my car was past the break-in period; now, I get an oil change every 2500 miles, just to be on the safe side.

Good advice. The installation of an aftermarket exhaust would give me pause, but if an inspection from a reputable independent mechanic shows nothing of major concern, it could be quite a deal for you.

A possible spike in insurance premiums, depending on past driving history?

hmmm i concur on the risk of buying an already modified vehicle. I also don't know your own level of skill with a vehicle.

1. What type of after market exhaust is it?
1a. Who installed it?
1b. If it was a self install you need to get the car on a lift and see if it was a well done job. People who dont know what they are doing can bend bolts, etc. plus rust.

2. I am not familiar with the EX model civic, but does it need to be running premium?
2a. Check the spark plugs yourself.
side note... what are "Yiridium spark plugs" Iridium I think is what they mean...but I don't think it is really needed for the car but sounds nice. Which again makes me question why they didn't specify on the exhaust.

Overall buying used is risky, buying used partially tuned is riskier.

If you take it, drive it around, listen to the exhaust, SMELL the exhaust, pop the hood and listen for sizzles... lol. dont want any leaks.

and if possible you can take it to a professional and have it checked out, then go for it. Civics are great cars, and have a lot of potential if you are looking to further mod it.
