+1 sometimes there is nothing a studio can do, bad source, bad film stock, bad filming techniques all come in to play
but then yes some studios get lazy and put out a upconvert of the dvd and make it a higher bitrate to look "HD"

and as for movies that need new transfers:
the dark knight

go ahead and chew me up, the majority of ppl on here will agree

I happen to like the lionsgate movies most are in dts-hd 7.1 which is a bonus for those of us with 7.1 equipment. The two discrete rear channels, as opposed to matrixed ones of faked out with pro logic II or neo 6, really make a big difference! Now that I think about it, though, you do have a point with some of their older movies released on blu ray. Total Recall looks just like the special editon dvd that I already had, although it sounds better, and The Running Man, which i just purchased in the last week, isn't much better!

Indeed they do. I watched Stargate a few nights ago and it reminded me why 7.1 is the best quality.

I have to disagree with you i think the dark knight looks spectacular, even with that non-constant aspect ratio thing in the movie.

The Dark Knight is one of the biggest screw-ups in BD's short history. It seemed like all any reviewers watched were the IMAX shots (which, of course, looked amazing) and completely ignored the rest of the transfer.

WB made the BD off of the IMAX DMR which had a huge amount of Edge Enhancement and some Noise Reduction applied to the shots that were done in 35mm. While this was a perfectly acceptable image to most in the IMAX theaters, it looks almost as bad as 2006 Lionsgate fare on the disc (I'm exaggerating a bit, but it still looks terrible for a 2008 title).

The fact that the transfer received almost universal praise was one of my first lessons learned about the credibility of reviews and reviewers. Thank God we have Netflix to test-drive new titles.

The Wild Bunch could definitely use a new transfer. It looks nice, but far too smeary.

The audio is great in 5.1 dts-hd-ma, its really improved, but they didn't put any effort into the picture quality AT ALL! I waited over a year for that movie to be released on blu ray and was sorely disappointed. I dont trade in movies or games, but if i did, then i would trade that one!
War of the Worlds is supposed to be grainy. That is the Directors intention. Picture quality on this disc is very good indeed although not quite as good as the audio quality.

second The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and will wait for a new Master and Commander as well. Audition got mediocre reviews for PQ and I'm hoping better elements are used next time.

I'm baffled at the people that didn't like TDK transfer. I can see where there is room for improvement, but it's not a train wreck. I'd still give it a 4/5 for PQ. But, that's just me.
