Revolutionary Road(set in the 50's) is a great/tragic story of of a husband and wife that want to be in love. That alone made me want to see this film. It is such an intriguing idea. RR is a story that will make you feel for the characters and want to see them pull through. In the beginning you see a man and wife that are just mad with each other and you then you find out why. This is not a period piece by any means. The year is really just a "backdrop" for this film. The plot/story is so relevant to any time especially now. This is really a character based story that makes you really sink into each character's emotions and the lifestyle they each live. I was so into these characters and the way they reacted and showed their emotions toward each other. All I can really say is that the acting in this was really something special.

In the 50's everyone dressed the same and everything was so innocent. Kate Winslet plays an Oscar winning performance and well deserving she is. Kate's character(April) is a women who wants to live a life out of the ordinary and just be different than everyone else. Leonardo puts on a great performance(Golden Globe nom) as well. I don't want to say too much about these characters but they are most def amazing to watch. Kate and Leo are amazing.

The story will grab you and suck you in. If you have read the novel then you should love this. If you haven't then you should also love it. If your a fan of Leo, Kate or Sam Mendes then this is a must see.

PQ: 4.5/5
Def a good looking blu. The image was nice and clear. No complains at all.
AQ:4.5/5
Great audio as well. This film is mainly dialogue but the score is beautiful and def fits the tone of the film and you can feel the mix plays out very well.

Def check this out if you love a good character based film. Also if you love Leo and/or Kate.
Great review...I completely concur, in particular about the story grabbing your attention throughout. Great, and I think under-rated, flick.

Glad that wasn't an issue for you (i.e., the time period). I just couldn't get past it. I wasn't alive in the 50's, but from what I've heard and read, the relationship dynamics weren't very realistic (i.e., wife giving ultimatums, etc). But I could be way off on that. I'll admit social history is not my forte.

The time period of a film is not significant to me and doesn't hurt a film, provided it doesn't render the plot unrealistic.

Last Year at Marienbad - 3/5

I was pretty lost during this whole film, so I didn't enjoy it very much and I found myself nodding off a few times. After it was over, I realized that I kinda liked the style of the film and the mood, but if I understood the bloody thing, I might actually appreciate it more! After just watching 8 1/2 and this, I'd say that I'd probably be a lot more fond of Marienbad if I came to understand it. The lady was pretty good lookin though, so that helped some lol

Jhiggy, wanna help me out on this one

Law Abiding Citizen - 6/10

There are scenes of down-n-dirty and fun vigilante action, and Gerard Butler delivers an entertaining, intense performance, but this film is undermined by its self-importance. It seems to believe it has Big Ideas™ regarding justice and revenge. Stretches of the two-hour running time are just dull and far, far too ponderous.

Also, there's a point where the film wants you to stop rooting for the espionage genius avenging his wife and daughter's deaths (Butler)--he's gone too far!--and begin sympathizing with the compromised, but well-intentioned--he loves his family!--prosecutor (Jamie Foxx). I never did.

I love this movie (it's in my Blu-ray collection). It's such a beautiful, haunting, stylish production. A unique treat for the senses.

If you are interesting in its "depths," this is a good, simple read: http://faculty.frostburg.edu/phil/forum/Marienbad.htm

My favorite band made a video in the style of Last Year at Marienbad. To be honest, this is how I came to be aware of the film. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0YvOncfBJU

Aren't you dealing in rather harsh generalizations? Not every couple in the 1950s had the exact same dynamic, nor do they now.

Neither the DiCaprio or Winslet character seemed to be the type to embrace strict gender roles; both, as the prologue shows, were...proto-hipsters. They wanted to escape suffocating gender roles and suburbanite conventions, to an idealized "Paris" of high fashion and progressive thought and chic music, etc.

[Show spoiler]
there is nothing to "understand." its intentionally ambigious.

you have 3 characters: (1) the guy who thinks he saw her last year, (2) the girl and (3) another guy, either a husband/boyfriend.

the film flops back and forth between this year and last year, with (1) narrating. was he with her last year? (1) insists that he was with (2) at teh hotel last year. (2) denies it. (1) spends the film trying to persuade (2) that they were there last year. hence, you see scenes flip flopping between this year (him taking to her now) and last year (him talking to her now, describing what he thinks they did last year, and then him/her envisioning what they did last year)

so what's the answer? there is none. even the guy who wrote and directed it isn't sure.

did that help?

Last Year at Marienbad is an absolutely beautiful film. It usually requires multiple viewings to truly appreciate it. I'd say you should probably discuss and think about it, rewatch it, then come back and discuss again. I can't say enough about this movie, don't even get me started.

I've always felt fairly certain
[Show spoiler]there was no affair at Marienbad. He is using charm, storytelling skills, and firm suggestion, and the story/illusion begins to become true, in a hazy way. A the-line-between-reality-and-imagination-is-vanishing type movie.

I find it hard to see why it should be bad, I mean it's supposed to be a fun b-movie and it delivered for me anyways.
