How could there even be a sequel? I don't care, just as long as he directs another movie soon.

What?? How would that even work? This movie is perfect companion-less and I surely hope it stays that way...

I seem to be in the vast minority here, but I ABSOLUTELY HATED this movie! Was it different and out there? Yes. Does that make it good? NO! The movie makes no sense and it is just flat out frustrating to watch.

[Show spoiler] The first half of the movie is the Naomi watts character dreaming about herself (she's so innocent, riiiiiiiiiight) and subconsciously making up some conspiracy theory about why she didn't get a role in a movie and another girl did. The second half (after "Club Silencio") is the actual reality of her living with what she'd done to her "rival."

In a nutshell at least.

So, even though some aspects within the story don't really have concrete meaning, (the cowboy, the key, club silencio) there is a method to the madness. Go back and watch it with that in mind and it might be more enjoyable.

Default meaning of this movie

I respectfully disagree with most of these comments that the movie didn't make sense, had no meaning etc. This is one of my favorite movies and I've seen it several times. My humble take is the movie makes perfect sense and every part of it has meaning. Basically, in a nutshell, the first part of the movie is the dream of the actress, Diane Selwyn, and she adopts the persona of Bettie as a much more talented and wholesome version of herself. In the dream, she rescues Camille (Rita) her real life lover who jilted her for the director Adam Kesher.

In real life, Diane has hired a hit man to take out Camille and he does so, leaving behind a blue key to show that he has finished the job. Diane wakes from her dream to the reality that Camille is dead. Camille is overcome with guilt and shoots herself.

The club scene is Diane's realization in the dream that it really is just a dream. The blue key takes on all sorts of meaning and is really just the calling card of the hitman, who in the dream is sort of a bumbling clown. In real life, she asks the hitman what the key opens and he just laughs. Her mind actually does try to figure out what the blue key would open. It doesn't open anything. Just an indicator that Camille has been taken out.

Diane uses people from her reality to play parts in her dream. Adam Kesher is just himself.

I strongly disagree with anyone who says this movie doesn't have a coherent plot, meaning etc. But my interpretation could be wrong.

I thought Eraserhead was just about a man's fear of becoming a parent. It's a bit like a fever dream you might have if you just learned your girlfriend is pregnant, and you're not sure if you're ready to be responsible for another human being. That's what I took away from it, at least.

Mulholland Dr. was pretty straightforward after 2-3 viewings.

Now, Lost Highway... That one is much harder to decipher than MD.

I'm sure Lynch has heard that idea, but he still claims no one has ever hit the nail on "Eraserhead."

I had a coworker who thought the guy was really a worm and his girlfriend was a bird. The way he explained it though, it actually made sense.

Great post!

I think different people mean different things when they say "makes no sense." Some people just use it as a general criticism, and nothing more. Others use it to say they couldn't understand anything, and nothing more. And others, use it to simply point out that the characters aren't typical or ordinary and/or aren't who they seem to be. I'd argue that the plot isn't "coherent" in the sense that the same "physical form" is presented as more than one character, but is "coherent" in the sense of your explanation of the characters/bodies. I think I'm going to really enjoy this film the next time around with your perspective, much thanks again!

Excellent posts! I wish every time someone mentions how they hated the movie 'cause they didn't understand it would automatically be redirected to these answers. That would save a lot of time and trouble.

Lynch's most beautifully terrifying film to date. This is his indictment of the Hollywood culture. Club Silencio (IMHO) is a metaphor for Hollywood: everything is make-believe.

I like parts of Mulholland Drive, and it's dark view of Hollywood is feels both insightful and depressing but I don't know if I'll ever own it on Blu.
I might get it as a package deal if it's packaged with Lost Highway, Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Dune.

Most people I've talked to that actively dislike this movie seem to get caught up in the dissonance of the plot, which Lynch has intentionally made amorphous, although it can be pieced together as demonstrated by some of the great explainers given in this thread. To try and fully understand the plot belies the point of Lynch's films, which are like music in that they are meant to convey moods and emotions rather than distinct intellectual ideas. Unlike a director such as, say Christopher Nolan, who seems obsessed with crafting his films like the intricate gears of a clockwork, Lynch is content to strike a consistent emotional tone without a firm resolution of every element of the plot.

Well, in the meantime, for those of you in need of a LYNCH fix, here's his latest, the full 15-minute promo-movie for Dior. It's got that "Lynch feel" we all came to love, and it's short enough to watch multiple times:

Lady Blue Shanghai

You're welcome.

The fact that he cast Marion Cotillard (from PUBLIC ENEMIES) is perfect too! She has the look of a character in a Lynch film: unique, striking features that you cant soon forget. I hope he uses her in a feature-length film.
