this is a public domain title now I believe (Night of the living dead 3d was released due to this) is there any chance of it coming to Blu-ray (the 1968 or 1990 version)? also I'm curious as to what studio would own the rights to it if it hadn't gone Public domain.

Yes it would. I've bought that movie on nearly every format available. It's one of my all time favorite horror movies ever. I've had it on VHS, laserdisc, the Millenium Edition DVD (the red case). I'd buy it on blu ray in a heartbeat.

I think what he meant is wether or not the picture or sound would benefit from Blu. It was a pretty low budget movie and, correct me if I'm wrong, wasn't it filmed in 4:3?

I don't know how much of a benefit it would be as far as PQ an AQ, just for me personally I have always purchased it on the format I'm currently watching movies on. I imagine they could do a little something with it, I doubt it'd be significantly better than the SD disc. |

Yeah the orginal Night of The Living Dead was shot in 4:3.So if it was released in High Def there would be black bars on the right and left side of the screen.

Yes it would be worth releasing in hi-def. Just like the low-budget, independent classic, Halloween was worth releasing in hi-def. Age and low budget should not disqualify a film from hi-def.

The only company that has released the original 1968 version of "Night of the Living Dead" directed by George Romero on DVD with an impeccable transfer is Elite Entertainment. Their "Millenium Edition" is the best (outside of a Blu-ray release) version of the film ever placed on a home video format. Before I sold off most of my DVD collection, this was one of the titles I really debated selling, it is nearly a pristine transfer.

If it is "worth" a Blu-ray upgrade depends on the condition of the original source. Film has vasty more "effective" resolution than a 480p DVD...and typically a lot more than a 1080p Blu-ray. Even a "cheap" film can be restored to great, Blu-ray worthy condition if the original film elements aren't totally trashed...look at Halloween on Blu-ray to see what I mean.

I hope they do it, I have the other two and the series won't be complete without it.
Obviously there are the remakes and land of the dead which would be good as well, but those three are the originals. |
