So why wasn't this recalled ala SPR? I know it was an audio error, but Gladiator was/is definitely a video error.

Mine is light gray ,but again i viewed the disc, called parmount, read off the NA13081B1R2, AND THE PERSON SAID YOU HAVE THE REMASTERED DISC.I already knew that just viewing the disc. I have seen the old master. I got a feeling that people with the remastered disc are going to find there light gray, dark, gray. Besides the bestbuy in my area pulled all the old gladiators discs ,they had all remastered. trust me when you view the disc you'll see the difference, right away. The only thing i noticed in the store was the blu-ray case and slip case have no 2 disc above the paramount logo. AS SOMEONE already pointed out the color of the disc and all that isn't going to matter. Upon viewing this disc, it looks like BRAVEHEART as far as pq. NO DNR,EE, GRAIN IS THERE AND UNIFORM AND THE BIG DIFFERENCE IS THE COLOR TIMEING. GLADIATOR LOOKS NOW LIKE IT SHOULD HAVE AND WORTHY OF THE SAPPHIRE SERIES LOGO. WE SHOULD THANK PARAMOUNT FOR MAKING THINGS RIGHT IN THE BLU-RAY WORLD TIME TO BURY THE HACHET.

Made things right? They're blatantly being shady and hiding the fact they screwed up a major release. There was no recall, no markings like a yellow UPC, nothing. It's all a scam/double dip right now.

Was there even a notice that there is a recall sent out to websites/stores/customers? I know of the exchange program, but the way they are handling this is a disgrace.

Thanks for the info, my disc is the same exact as yours, light grey, R2 etc. I also spoke to two different reps at Paramount today and they confirmed the R2 serial number as the remaster. Looking forward to watching the movie tomorrow, I didn't even open the old version after hearing the reports of bad quality, it'll be nice to see it the way it should be .

Ok, Just to make sure I wasn't crazy, I went to Blockbuster to rent the old Gladiator Blu to make sure (even though I was already 100% sure I had the remaster)

Beyond a shadow of a doubt, the copy I own is indeed the remaster.

So, there are indeed Remastered pressings on the original Light Grey discs.

My copy is the EXACT same disc as the original in terms of look. Its Light Grey and the lettering is cut out showing the actual disc. However my disc is labeled R2, and the old one R1.

So far, the ONLY full proof way to find a remaster seems to be the lack of 2 Disc Set on the back.

Dont worry if your disc is Light Grey, it means nothing.

And further, my disc also came with the $10 off sticker on the front, and includes the rebate insert that expired on 6/30. So these things also have no bearing on whether or not you own the remaster.

Does your set include the previews before the main menu of Gladiator? I believe there are two runs of the re-mastered discs. That is why a posed the question in a previous post: Does anyone have the dark grey disk with white lettering that has the NAXXXRX number? If the answer is no, then there are two runs of the re-mastered copy. If the answer is yes, then we have three runs of the re-mastered copy.

Paramount really screwed this up in a big way. They are also very secretive about what their doing which makes matters worse. I really think this is due to the fact they they never fully admitted there was a problem with the original release.

my copy (light grey disc, r2) doesn't have any sapphire previews on it, only the paramount high def intro in 1080p, and then a "now available on blu ray" montage with transformers etc in 480p, and then it goes to the menu, i'm certain mine has the new master btw (i had and sold the first one)...but yea who really knows how many re-masters there are??? pretty ridiculous

So if I was a regular customer in store and bought this, hated the quality... then what? How would I know of this program? Are there ads in store telling people of the issue? Is there a notice on their website about the problem?

My point is it should be handled just like SPR. Pull all stock, inform the media, and admit fault with your product. This secracy of looking for different color discs or the lack of tiny print on the back of the case is nonsense.

Mike they my have a series of numbers, who cares, when you call ,read the number you have and if its the old one they will give you the address to ship for replacement. If you read the number all they say is you have or have not the remastered disc. This is getting out of hand. again...VIEW THE DISC, the pq in the remastered is as plain as the nose on my face. IT LOOKS GREAT! IF you liked the pq on BRAVEHEART,GLADIATOR LOOKS A LITTLE BETTER THEN BRAVEHAEART.

This basically confirms my assumption that Paramount has two runs of the re-mastered version. Since no one has a dark grey disk with NAXXXXR2 number. The two runs appear to be:

1) Light grey with the NAXXXXR2 number, looks like the original disc excepts it ends in R2

2) Dark grey no NAXXXXR2 number and the numbers can vary, they're not consistent

It also appears that a tell tale sign of the a re-mastered version is the preview for Braveheart, Forrest Gump, and Gladiator before the Gladiator main menu.

It should be noted that Paramount exchange support will only acknowledge that discs with the R2 are re-mastered. But as Mike pointed out in a previous post, they're more like trained monkeys. All their knowledge is based on a script, they cannot and will not think outside of the box.

When you view the remastered disc, take notice of close ups of faces, lots of detail.

There is no preview on my light grey remastered disc. It opens with the Paramount HD logo, and then goes straight to the menu that lets you choose Theatrical or Extended Cut.

It not like there is a lot of leeway in terms of finding the difference between the transfers. I mean, beyond the actual improved transfer, the new disc has been almost entirely re-color timed. Its impossible to mistake one for the other. Many scenes now sport hugely different looks.

Hey Guys, I just picked mine up at BB. I did not have the orginal but I am sure it is remastered. First off, quite a bit of grain. I also took a look at this comparison:

this scene seems to be have a different look, should be easy to tell:
on the new disc, the sky looks more overcast:
http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/4664/glad12dbd.png

on the old disc, the sky has more contrast and is more blue, and Crowe's face is much darker against it: http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/7758/glad12zbd.png

The is clearly a difference in the overcast of the sky. This was the easiest screenshot for comparison.

My disk is the light gray just like Braveheart so I do not think the dark gray disk is required. I had no security tabs, no "2 disk set" above Paramount logo, $10 coupon expires 6/10, no Sapphire Intro, and the number on the disk starts with NA and ends with R2 (NAXXXXXXXXXXR2).

Hope this helps.

I've checked 2 Targets and a Best Buy... no remastered copies in my area yet. Not that I would pay their prices anyway.

Well, its pretty obvious at this point that there are indeed TWO different pressings. The dark grey, and the light grey.
