Hey all. I'm pretty sure this started after PS3 2.0, but it could have begun before that, I don't remember. Anyway, whenever the audio format switches on my receiver, there's a pop from my speakers. For instance, when switching from a point where it's receiving Dolby Digital to a menu where it's Pro Logic, there's a pop. I've checked all my speaker connections, and can't find any issue there. Any thoughts?

This also happens with my Onkyo 805(quite a few reports of popping with the Onkyo) and PS3 when switching audio formats as well.At first I thought it was the receiver but doesn't do it with my standard def dvd player or directv receiver.

I have an 805 and use the Sony 300 player. No popping ever. Makes me wonder if it's the PS3...

FWIW, I found that this only happens when the receiver switches from non-PCM to PCM. For example, if I fast forward and resume playback, the receiver sees a non-PCM signal, then pops when I hit play and it begins reading PCM. Also happens between menus, when the menus are read as PCM and the "blank" areas between are non-PCM. I emailed Pioneer support and all they told me to do was call them, which kind of defeats the purpose of their email support, but I'll try them tomorrow and see what's up. This doesn't happen with any of my other devices, but the PS3 is the only thing I have that utilizes PCM.
It also only seems to happen on DVD/Blu-ray . . . never had it happen on a game. Last edited by BStecke; 11-30-2007 at 03:48 AM. |

That popping (clipping) will kill your speakers. I had the same problem - only only happened with my PS3 and HD-DVD player. I was also to resolve this with a firmware upgrade, though most receivers do not allow for this.
Just make sure the receiver is muted until you get past this part in order to protect your speakers. Edited to add: This is what my firmware reads: 2. Fixed crackling problem exhibited in some units when multichannel PCM input was played. Last edited by cpgator; 11-30-2007 at 02:36 PM. |
