Some people are taking the whole a movie being pointless thing a little too seriously. I'm sure the person who originally called whatever movie it was pointless meant it in the same way I do if I call a film pointless. There being no point to the story itself is what I would call pointless. If I just spent two hours watching a movie and at the end of it I felt nothing really happened the whole time, then it was pointless to me. There are other examples as well, but I'll just stick with that one for now.

Total Recall

Film: 4/5
-great screenplay, with great twisted storyline. One of 2 interpretations: (1)
[Show spoiler]Quaid is real and goes on a dream at Recall
, or (2)
[Show spoiler]Arnold isn't Quaid. He's really Hauser. The best evidence of this is Arnold's dreams of Mars and the brunette girl before he went to Recall. Hauser's memory was erased and Quaid's identity was put in. When Quaid went to Recall, the procedure didn't implant memory, but actually uncovered the pre-existing Hauser memory (or part of it).

This is a great film b/c you could watch it twice and go with different interpretations.

PQ: 1/5. Just horrific. DVD quality

AQ: 2/5. Better than DVD, which isn't saying much.

I read that the UK import is better quality. Probably still weak though.

I liked this one. It's a fun, classic adventure film and Bogart/Hepburn were great together.

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) DVD

From Netflix: On a serene New England campus, emasculated professor George (Richard Burton) and his rancorous wife, Martha (Elizabeth Taylor), turn an evening of cocktails into an unrelenting onslaught of wrenching disclosures and bellowed epithets. Soon, the couple's guests -- junior professor Nick (George Segal) and his wife, Honey (Sandy Dennis) -- get sucked into the vortex of the warring duo's unbounded fury. Taylor nabbed an Oscar for her role.

That sums it up nicely. The performances are off the charts awesome. All 4 of them. This is a seriously dysfuntional group of people, fueled by large quantities of liquor, engaging in a no-holds-barred verbal asault on one another. 131 minutes of the most vial, brutal, vulgar, condescending, harm intending, bellitling and berating dialog....NON STOP. Every sentence meticulously designed to chatise, castrate, inflame and scar. The kind of stuff that once its said, can never be taken back.

Very well written, as the statements and rebuttals are all so realistic of a fueding drunken couple that has kept their contempt for each other burried for decades. The "innocent" guests have their own secrets too, and once sauced up, they join the game. And it just gets uglier and uglier.

I noticed well into the film that there was no score and no "ambient" music either. Just the atmosphere and mood sucked me in. Later, there was a little, but not much.

Interesting camera work, even if it is a little 60's artsy.

4.5/5 for insanely good dialog and acting.

According to an interview I saw with director Paul Verhoeven, the second interpretation is what was intended.
[Show spoiler]Arnold's last lines in the movie was kinda tacked on as a "curley-cue" of an ending, but the filmmakers never intended to have the film's plot interpreted as just a dream
. Or so I saw.

If you ever get a hold of the Special Edition DVD, or a decent import with extras, this interview ought to be in there. The extras were pretty cool for this film (Verhoeven is such a crazy dude! ).

No, it's the best-looking that I've seen. Noisy for sure, but surprisingly clean in some spots, and very sharp. I'd give it a 4/5 on the PQ; 4.5/5 at the highest. AQ sounded alright.

Wow I never thought of that but I guess it makes sense, I do think Total Recall is as good as Inception, it's a shame it has yet to get a decent transfer.

The Cake Eaters 4/5

Very beautiful and sensitive drama. The acting was excellent, especially from Kristen Stewart. Sure, there were some clichés but I liked it regardless. Can't wait to get the Blu-ray!

Yeah, there is plenty of evidence supporting the
[Show spoiler]dream theory.
. For example,
[Show spoiler]the coincidence of everything turning out on Mars in the exact same way he asked at Recall: (1) Brunette chick, athletic, sleezy yet a demurrer, (2) secret agent - he didn't end up a chef (3) kill the bad guys, (4) save the planet, etc etc. Bottom line: if its just a dream, that is a 10000000000000000000:1 shot, actuarily speaking

I still agree with the second theory, but the dream theory has TONS of weight. Part of why this movie kicks ass!

Hey fellas we should start a Movie challenge thread. Put out a movie and everyone has a week to watch and review it. What do you say??? Sounds fun. Make sure the movies are easily accessible though

I think 1 movie a week is a bit much, considering everyone's different schedules, netflix queues, etc. Plus there's already a "movie of the month" thread. I really like the idea, maybe we can start posting in the movie of the month thread. I'm not sure if it's stayed active.

I think you'll like it a lot! Right after the film's over, if you look like this , go read the Triangle thread for an hour or so and you'll be wanting to watch the film again immediately!

I should have rented that the last time I rented a movie instead of what I did rent. Triangle is still on my mental list though. One of these days...
