Open Water 2: Adrift

i actually liked this film more than Open Water. it's not "better" but this was a tad more entertaining probably because it has more than two characters in it. and they aren't always completely annoying.

not scary though, and has nothing to do with
[Show spoiler]sharks
, which kind of pissed me off since that's what the first one was all built up around. oh well. i knew it wasn't an "actual" sequel. this film has people in water away from land. that's the resemblance.

1.5/5

I'll come over and hold your hand

Haha just check out the Triangle thread afterwards and that will answer a lot of questions. Next time I watch it, it will definitely be with a friend so we can discuss the film in detail. For the first time though, just sit back and enjoy.

It's much better watching it with a friend, it heightened the experience because we were both pretty much blown away. We talked about it right afterwards with wide eyes
So do watch with a friend if possible.

Ghostbusters (With Slimer Mode activated)
Film - 5/5
PQ - 4/5
AQ - 3.5/5

First off, I absolutely love this movie, and the PiP track only made it a better viewing. Lots of interesting things on there that had to do with shooting and story writing. One of the funniest things they mentioned was that they basically ran around NYC shooting quick shots, and in fact, they didn't get permission to shoot in one section of the city. A police officer is seen chasing the Ghostbusters, and it was a real officer! Just found that interesting. I was a bit hesitant with buying this, as I hate grain (or used to), and after seeing it being demoed at Walmart, I thought it was the worst transfer ever. But, opinions change and I've learned to appreciate grainy films, if done right. There were a lot of shots that looked particularly amazing, but overall, it just wasn't a reference quality Blu.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

First time viewing.

When I put it on I sort of thought it would be or for me, as I really wasn't that interested in watching it, I just randomly decided to a day or two ago to see it.

Well I'm glad I did, I really really enjoyed it.

I thought the story was very interesting to watch, Pitt did a pretty good job as Button, and I liked his narration of the movie.

I'm not going to list everything I liked, because there really wasn't much that I didn't like; just a couple things here and there.

The movie actually got better to me as it went on. Somewhere in the middle I was thing a 4.25, then a little later I was thinking 4.5. But the sequence from
[Show spoiler]when he found out she was pregnant and began to worry about the future
until the end was fantastic imo and pushed up the final score.

So...

I didn't leave my house for 4 days. Dominos made a ton in my neighborhood.

Then a week later, I invited this girl over to watch it, since she loves horror. INstead of coming over to watch it, she couldn't wait to see it, so watches it online (some hack site), then I get a call on my way to starbucks the next afternoon, she is frantic and goes "OMG WTF was that?? please explain it to me now. i can't sit still since i watched it!!!". I had to pull my car over as I got too excited on the phone. Too bad she wasn't with me. From now I'm making Triangle a mandatory first-date night flick.

Training Day.
Watched it by the advice of forum members.

I liked it a lot. One of the finect cops movies ever.
It is really nice when they make movies with no obvious bad guys or villains.
It makes the movie so much more better and realistic experience.

One thing about this movie sucked though for which I deduct 1 point.
[Show spoiler]Washington dies at the end, and I kind of liked his character. But than again, he dies almost in all his movies, isnt this weird?

9/10.

Paris, Texas (blu) (Criterion)

PQ: 3.5 (out of 5)

Unimpressive for a blu, let alone a Criterion. Not a single scene impressed me with its PQ.

AQ: 4 stars (out of 5)

Dialogue was crisp; sufficient.

Film: 4 stars (out of 4)

I'm not sure what it is--and such this review suffers--but this film really touched me. Maybe it was Stanton's haunting portrayal of Travis, from the opening scenes where he refuses to talk, to the
[Show spoiler]concluding look on his face in the car.
Maybe it's the monologue, which Ebert and others have labeled one of the most famous and most effective in movie history. While that monologue may not be the sole reason for my love of this film, it's a perfect example of why I love it.

Name another monologue like that. You can't. That doesn't mean it's the best ever, as there are other great ones like the one in Blade Runner. But the writing, acting, and directing of that monologue is absolutely exceptional. It's eloquently written, yet simplistic and soul bearing. Stanton's recitation of it feels authentic, as he doesn't simply say the words but seems to be thinking of them (which is evident through his stumbling over words at times). The directing is spot on, with the overlap of Travis and his wife's head in the glass being the prime example. This is the type of scene that you simply don't see in Hollywood films anymore, on any of those three levels.

This film shouldn't be quite as affecting due to the revelations made in the monologue, but it still is. I will absolutely be picking it up during the Criterion sale in November. Surfdude gets a shout out for his recommendation of it.

The Last Song

Film: 2 stars (out of 4)

Forced to watch it by some girl, because the Runaways wasn't at the store. What a waste of my time, with embarassing acting from Miley Cyrus and even more embarassing writing. Sparks should be ashamed by the angle he took later in the film.

Atonement (blu)

PQ: 5 stars (out of 5)

Yes, the film gets my perfect rating, which I very rarely give. The interior shots are inevitably a bit dark and lacking in detail, but the vast majority of the movie (particularly the shots in nature or on the war torn plains of France) is so stunning in detail, color, and depth, that I found it impossible to warrant a less than perfect rating. This is exceptional stuff.

AQ: 4.5 stars (out of 5)

Very crisp all the way around.

Film: 4 stars (out of 4)

I've reviewed this film many times before so I won't do it again. Quite simply, it is one of the great romances of all-time and much more touching than Doctor Zhivago and Out of Africa, two films I greatly enjoy but two films that aren't particularly moving. Joe Wright's failure to be nominated for directing is my number 1 most egregious Oscar snub of all-time. There are at least 10 directing choices in the film that truly stand out, and that doesn't include the tracking shot on Dunkirk, which is one of cinema's all-time great tracking shots. I've seen the film 8 times now and the story affects me more each time. Pretty good considering the first time I saw it I gave it 2 1/2 stars (but then it gnawed at me for weeks).
