Default Not this time

I'm completely confused about this re-release. Namely, why.

I've not found anything wanting in pq compared to the version I have from last year. And trying to figure out which of these re-releases is correct is making my head spin. Maybe it's worth a closer look, but I have a 40" HDTV and haven't noticed anything.

Not double-dipping this time.

lol,the difference is Night and Day, not even funny it's so huge, don't even have to worry about double dipping, just send in your copy to paramount with their exchange program and they'll upgraded you for free.

Even thought I bought it last year, and don't have the original slipcover?

Wait, I see some info here. So all I need to do is mail the disc?

All you need is to send in Disc 1 with your information and they will mail you the new version...

If your question is serious, than the answer is: the first one has so much DNR and EE that it ended up looking like the CG movie BEOWULF, when it's not supposed to.

Perhaps this is a bit harsh, but you think that there was nothing was wrong with the original release, but just stop buying Blu all together. The original release was riddled with some HORRID edge enhancement, was smeared to death with DNR (digital noise reduction), and really in the end, just looked like an upconverted DVD. Not only that, but there are details that are missing from the original Blu-ray release.

If you're unfamiliar with what may be missing... the most notable error due to the digital scrubbing, has been the loss of the fiery arrows that appear in the first major battle at the beginning of the film. The army that Russell Crowe's character was a part of, was VASTLY superior to the natives they were there to 'get out of the way'. We see a lot of fighting and a lot of blood... but then we see the shot of a bajillion fiery arrows being sent through the sky towards the unsuspecting natives, and it's at this moment where the audience is supposed to have their jaw drop and say, "Holy SHIT that's a lot of friggin' arrows", because that's when they TRULY understand just how powerful that army is.

In the original Blu-ray release... a good majority of the fiery arrows were mistaken as 'scratches' on the film print, and were digitally removed. So that show has completely lost its intended impact as a result.

Just compare the fiery arrows being launched through the sky in both versions, and you'll have no question about which one is the corrected version, and which one is not.

It appears BestBuy has the new copy but I am not willing to spend $24.99 for this title. I guess I will be waiting a bit longer for a better price.

Watched my replacement copy yesterday and it was a beautiful thing. The way it should be. Great, natural looking picture, great movie. Do it this way the first time in the future, Paramount, please.

Default Gladiator at Amazon

I contacted Amazon and they told me they "think" the blu ray version of Gladiator is the old one. They indicated that customer service is in a different area than the fullfillment centers. Has anyone recently ordered Gladiator from Amazon and if so, did you get the remastered edition?

Talking RE: Identifying NEW "Gladiator" Remastered BD!>>>

The following information re: the new "Gladiator" BD remaster is available right here on the Blu-Ray.com forum.

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Gladi.../14649/#Review

Go to the bottom of the page in the ~Gladiator Blu-ray, Overall Score and Recommendation~section: " Owners of the original will want to receive this updated version free of charge (details here) and those who are holding out for a superior transfer will want to pick up this release. However, new copies aren't easily identified from older pressings at-a-glance. Buyers will need to look at the back cover's bottom right-hand corner for a Paramount logo, and if the words "2-DISC SET" are present, that's the old copy; the new versions do not contain the "2-DISC SET" lettering. Please see screenshot 20 (click the "Screenshots" tab above) for a photograph of the difference, with the new release on top and the old release on the bottom. Also please note that some buyers are reporting that Paramount has changed the UPC code on the back of the box to a yellow color with the latest pressing of the new release."

I've been reading that this NEW "Gladiator" BD may start appearing in stores to coincide with the release of Ridley and Russell's "Robin Hood" BD. September 14. Next week.

The is some information and a phone number given for a "limited trade-in" program, also.

"Gladiator" is a real favorite of mine. While I wasn't overwhelmingly disappointed in the first pressing, I do want the new one - eventually.

Hope this helps. - AJ

Is this correct? Mine doesn't have the "2-disc set" words at the bottom but it is 2009, hence I thought it was the remastered version. Also the screenshots tab for Gladiator on bluray.com show both copies as saying "2009."

Default Newly remastered Gladiator

I know this has been kicked around forever, but how do I identify the newly remastered 2010 Blu-ray version of Gladiator in stores? Thanks for any help. One disc vs two discs, labeling UPC codes, etc?

I have the remastered version without the 2-disc set, white upc, and 2009 on it. They pushed out replacements under the radar before making the yellow upc with the 2010 on it.

I'm sure you have the remastered one. I have the same version you do. It doesn't have to be 2010. Look on the back of the disc. It should say 1B1R2 instead of the 1B1R1. I have both versions.

Just watch the movie. If it looks breathtaking then you have the new one. If it looks a little better than DVD than you have the crap one. Lack of 2 disc set on the movie itself is a very strong indicator. Don't even pay attention to what the slip cover says.
