Default Region code for Hong Kong

I note that region A of PS3 is on sale in Hong Kong. What is the region code for Hong Kong in blu-ray software and hardware, not C in line with China?

Thanks,

Scott

That would be correct.

If you look at the back of the box of the PS3 sold in HK and Taiwan, you'll see that the BD octagon sign is A and the DVD world sign is 3. The Japanese PS3 is A for BD and 2 for DVD. The Americas would be A for BD and 1 for DVD.

I assume you are seeking clarification on DVD region coding. From LaserRot.com

Quote:
Region 1 - The U.S., U.S. territories and Canada

Region 2 - Europe, Japan, the Middle East, Egypt, South Africa, Greenland

Region 3 - Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Hong Kong

Region 4 - Mexico, South America, Central America, Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Caribbean

Region 5 - Russia (okay, former Russia), Eastern Europe, India, most of Africa, North Korea, Mongolia

Region 6 - China
This is what I found but in practice, the list are shorter, I think. Region 3 is basically South East Asia.

Your list says what I say My question was in reference to your statement that in "The Americas would be A for BD and 1 for DVD." for PS3.
Would a PS3 sold in Mexico (North America, BD region A, DVD region 4) play region 4 DVDs or Region 1 DVDs or both? Etc. See the confusion it's already bringing about Hong Kong. I wonder how confusing this is gonna be when we get "all in one" BD/DVD/CD drives in laptops in the future

Oh I think SCE will stick close to what the BDA and the DVD Forum want. The PS2 still does not come region-free out of the box so I doubt cross-region playback can occur on DVD with the PS3.

I've always thought that South America is Region 1 as well, seeing that it's the Americas. But if it's not, then it can play Region A BDs and Region 4 DVDs - provided that it's in NTSC and not PAL DVDs.

The PS3 out of Japan plays Region 2 DVDs in NTSC only which restricts its usability for DVD playback to only Japanese DVDs and not European ones. As for PS3 for HK and Taiwan (and eventually for Malaysia and the Philipines - yo yo BlackRaven), I'm not sure. I would hope that it would play PAL and NTSC Region 3 discs, since R3 has countries with both systems as their broadcast standards.

Actually PS3 in HK can only play NTSC Region 3 DVD's, not the PAL ones

Knew it.

Oh well, there are always region-free players anyway.

Or if there is none now, maybe there will be in the future. I do know that Panasonic and Samsung offer codes to put region FREE or Region 0/ALL for DVD for their Blu-ray players in Europe.

Thanks for your replies.

For BD, Hong Kong, Japan and other South East Asia are grouped into region A with Americas.

Default NTSC region 3 DVD discs for Hong Kong

Can someone know why region 3 DVD discs for Hong Kong are NTSC, not PAL that is the colour standard in use on TV locally. Is it the same for Blu-ray disc as well?

Thanks,

Scott

Not sure what you mean, but movies on BD are 1080P/24. Regional coding only prohibits viewing a title outside of your region, it doesn't have a different format as with 1/NTSC and 2/PAL.

I think what he meant was that as HK tv stations broadcast in PAL, it was strange that HK region 3 DVDs were in NTSC and not in PAL... but its not really an issue with SDTV since almost all TVs/DVD players/VCRs in HK are multi-system...

Yup.

Any AV device (sold worldwide) that is built with the 21st century (year 2000 and beyond) is already Multi-system.

So even if it's for the American market, you're Sony BRAVIA TV can play standard NTSC content as well as PAL and SECAM.
