Though the novel Red Alert is a pure, straight-ahead drama, whereas the Kubrick film is only very loosely based upon it, and was changed into a comedy fairly early on in the development process.

Quick (minor) correction to that -- the so-called "Director's Cut" isn't Romero's true director's cut; that would be the theatrical version, as the longer, early Cannes version was inappropriately labeled "the Director's Cut" by Anchor Bay years ago when it first appeared on DVD.

That said, I definitely prefer the Cannes cut to either the theatrical print or the Argento version -- there's much more character-building and development present in that version which Romero (inexplicably) trimmed out of his final cut of the movie.

If you want to know what is different, go to the Kubrick FAQ page and scroll down to number 6:

Interesting. It's hard to imagine those scenes being good choices to cut, but then I've never seen the International version. Maybe it makes the pace better.

Having grown up with the international version, I have to say that's the one that's better. Some scenes cut could've been included (the entire tour of the hotel has been severely cut), but other things are just hokey.

It's certainly not a movie that will frighten you more with repeat viewings.... but the fact that it has such great cinematography, keeps the movie relevant and enjoyable with so many (and I mean.... A LOT ) repeat viewings.

Kurbrick was and always will be amazing! He knew how to take adavantage of every bit of technology, every lens, every camera, every light. His use of the steadicam is flawless. I do not believe there is another director who is able to top the late Stanley Kubrick's abilities. His framing radiates energy that is unsurpassed, everything about his work is living and breathing.

Sorry, to bump a old thread, but does anyone know if there is going to be a re-release of the Shinning, like a Digibook or some special edition?

I actually consider it the only movie to achieve the effect of becoming scarier every viewing. I'm not sure what it is about it, but you sort of get hypnotized by the cinematography more every time and sort of "get" inside the movie and so I get more shocked when the creepy images happen. I think the bright colors and symmetrical arrangements, the opposite of what horror movies usually have, create sorts of opposite effects on the mind too.

I have to agree with you. This movie maintains a creepiness level beyond most other horror movies. The feeling of impending doom and lingering evil in the hotel are stained into the imagery. Just the opening shot alone drifting over the lake then floating over the vast trees covered in fog is haunting. The hotel itself is made a character. A consumer of live's and souls that lives on generation after generation. It really is just a super haunted house story at its core IMO.

I don't feel it is scary, I enjoy it for the look and feel and performances and never get bored of it but I never get caught up in the suspense anymore after watching so many times over the last 25 years. Maybe only if I try to get somebody new to watch it but usually they don't get caught too much up into it these days.

I think it's a great movie, but I've never found it to be scary. It's fun because of the over-the-top performances of both Nicholson and Shelly Duvall. However, the movie version strays far from the original novel and the 4 1/2 hour TV movie with Stephen Weber and Rebecca DeMornay was actually the better telling of the story and IMO, scarier, because Weber's performance was so low-key and therefore, much more believable.

But like The Godfather, the movie has certainly entered the permanent cultural consciousness and has been endlessly parodied, even in TV commercials.
