This strategic decision stems directly from the tactical elements of today's HDM market.

To pretend that the tactical is too immaterial to matter in a strategic context is direly flawed.
Strategic decisions naturally fall out of the tactical situation. I didn't say the unit counts don't matter. I said that any decision won't be tactical.

And if Warner were to make a tactical production/marketing cost decision, then I would say that is a statement that HDM is floundering.

A decision made to attempt to end the war is strategic.

This is standard practice and not something to get upset about.

You think it's unfair this way because it always "favors" the loser.

Think of it a different way, if you truly round, rounding up from 65.5 to 66 is a bigger difference than rounding from 65.49 to 65. That's also unfair.

Don't get so worked up over it.

The real issue when you've found yourself stuck with a dead or dying format is when to dump the hardware and software so that you can get *something* back for it when you do. As you point out here, I think that time is fast approaching for HD.

Love the full-page ad. Awesome. And Ocean's 13 being 16,730 BD to 10,080 HD DVD (though would love to see an even bigger disparity).

And also thanks to Die Hard selling 100,000, thus making the math very easy to do.

Your original statement seemed to suggest that they wouldn't be so concerned with specific sales data due to its tactical nature. Maybe that is not what you meant.

Wow, Open Season and Spiderman 3 being so strong on the charts show that Best Buy and friends moved some serious units on BF. If I'm not mistaken, Open Season was given with a PS3 and Spidey 3 was given with BD SA's. Spidey 3 is obviously a popular title regardless, but Open Season shows that PS3's are pretty friggin popular this holiday season.

I'm not actually worked up over this, but the poor usage of statistics is epidemic these days and that is pitiful.

As for your alternate take on rounding... sorry, but that just isn't how rounding works, and no it isn't unfair to do it correctly. However I'll entertain your idea and make a better comparison.

You said:

"rounding up from 65.5 to 66 is a bigger difference than rounding from 65.49 to 65. That's also unfair."

Really? What's more unfair...

Their current practice of taking 65.99% and rounding it down to 65% (a 0.99 szied delta) or your hypothetic of taking 65.5% and rounding it up (a 0.50 difference)? Just doesn't compute.

I've been trying to say for awhile that any decision by Warner will be strategic. I'm just not sure if they feel their best strategy is to end this war. Their strategy thus far has served them pretty well. I'm not convinced that they WANT to be the studio that ends the war... as much as we'd all like them to be.

Anyone notice that HDM always picks a really lame movie to feature in the "Hi-Def This Week" section? This week they feature HD-DVD's "Arctic Tale", which I've never even heard of, over POTC or Superbad. I'm not really talking so much about bias, but they always feature something stupid.

Default Blu-ray widens their lead

It's great to see that week after week Blu-ray is widening their lead in the Hi Def race.

I'm curious to see how the Amazon.com stats end up being for the week ending 11/25/07:

http://blu-raystats.com/percentages.php

Any predictions?

(I know Amazon isn't the best measure to go by, I'm just curious is all)

I wonder what this will do to Toshiba computer sales (for the Tosh's that have the HD DVD drives). It would be interesting to see if people don't buy Tosh computers because they're afraid the format could go away. Though I suspect people who will buy computers with either HD DVD or blu-ray are people who have already chosen a side rather than people new to the format wars. I suspect there will be a few people who buy the new computers who are surprised later to find out it has an HD DVD or blu-ray drive in it.

I'm not trying to downplay the events by any means, BUT could someone better at math than me give a rough estimate of how much percentage points "Open Season" contributed to the ratio?

not too shabby for a long lasting catalog title
This is because it was a giveaway at best buy with each ps3 sale.

You could say that best buy was responsible for selling 50K ps3 on black friday.

Those don't count as BD players, at least according to Toshiba.
