Though all the focus has been on casting of The First Avenger:Captain America, Marvel Studios is also gearing up another priority property, Runaways. Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist director Peter Sollett is negotiating to direct the youth oriented film that is being called The Breakfast Club with superheroes. Runaways was hatched by Brian K. Vaughan, the Lost writer, and deals with children of supervillains who are cursed with evil powers but use them for heroic purposes. They are housed in a secret lair under the La Brea Tar Pits, and Joss Whedon wrote installments of the comic when Vaughan was unavailable. The film will be distributed under Marvel's pre-Disney deal with Paramount Pictures. WME and Oasis Media Group rep Sollett.

Several surprise hires in the Marvel universe today. First, Fox taps James McAvoy to play the young Professor Xavier in the Matthew Vaughn-directed X-Men: First Class. Now, Marvel Studios has picked a writer to draft Runaways, the live action film based on the cult favorite comic book (created by Lost writer Brian K. Vaughan) about the children of supervillains who try to use their evil powers for heroic purposes.

The job has gone to Drew Pearce. Considering the number of scribes who wanted the job, Pearce is a relative unknown but seems a good match for the subject matter when you consider his previous superhero work. Pearce is a British writer who created No Heroics, a humorous UK television series about a bar that's a hangout for superheros, who aren't allowed to use their powers while knocking back pints. Pearce will draft Runaways for Pete Sollett, the Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist director who was set in April to direct.

Movie is moving forward...quietly.

The Examiner is reporting that the film adaptation of Marvel Comics 'Runaways' is now in the pre-production stages and auditions for the project's stars is underway.

Runaways is based on the award-winning comic book series published by Marvel Comics and created by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona. The screenplay is being penned by Drew Pearce along with Brian K. Vaughan.

Peter Sollett will direct the big screen adaptation of Runaways.

‘Runaways’ film alters casting call after racism accusations

HollywoodNews.com: After the catastrophe that was the movie adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” it appears Marvel Studios may be more willing to do what Paramount was not: cast Asians in Asian roles.

With the casting call for the film version of Brian K. Vaughan’s popular graphic novel series “Runaways”–about several privileged Los Angeles teens who discover their parents are supervillains–was released last week, the outcry was immense. The character breakdown for main character Nico Minoru, who is Japanese-American in the comics, did not specify race (generally read as ‘white’ by default), while the ethnicity of another character, Alex Wilder (African-American in the comics), was clearly stated.

Following an Internet campaign by RaceBending.com, an organization founded originally in response to Paramount’s casting of non-Asian actors in “Last Airbender”, Marvel has responded with the following message: “To address your concern over casting for the role of Nico, as we do with all of our films, we intend to stay true to the legacy and story of the comic when casting these parts. Thus, our goal is to cast an Asian American actress as depicted in the comic series and the casting notice will be adjusted accordingly.”

The casting call now reads: “Uniquely beautiful, nurturing but guarded Female, Asian-American, must play 16-18. Must be at least 16 by January 2011.” Accordingly, “Runaways” begins production in January.

Production Weekly is now reporting that Marvel Studios will begin production on the big screen adaptation to Brian K Vaughan’s Runaways in March 2011, with production scheduled until the end of Summer 2011. The film will be shot in Los Angeles and is being produced under the fake production title “Small Faces”, a reference to the 1960’s-1970’s English rock n roll band which had a song titled Runaways. Randi Hiller Casting and Sarah Finn Casting are currently searching for the boys and girls who will be cast in the big screen movie.

A few months back it was reported that British screenwriter Drew Pearce was hired to write the adaptation, with Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist helmer Peter Sollett signed to helm the project.

Actually, a good portion of September is Summer. It is September now and we still have about three weeks of Summer left.

Thanks to the keen eyes over at /Film, young actress Keke Palmer, who rose to fame for her performance in the 2006 film Akeelah and the Bee, recently claimed in Essence Magazine...

"I’ve had a nice little break with the steady TV show but I’m definitely ready to do some more films again. I was just asked to join a new Marvel comic project called, “Runaways.”\
There hasn't been any confirmation yet, but with production set to begin in March next year, casting for the film should be well underway. Palmer is one of my favorite rising stars, and I'm glad shes being considered for films outside of what shes usually in. If true, I hope she accepts the role.

Anyhow, Runaways' story follows a group of teenagers discover that their parents are an organized group of super villains called The Pride. On the run from their homes, the group bands together and begin a journey of discovery, both of their parents’ origins and of their own inherited powers..

And as mentioned before, filming is set to begin next March, in Los Angeles, being produced under the fake production title “Small Faces”.

I'm not sure what role she could play, what do you think?

Yeah, but this one won't be FOX. Unless I've missed something. It's been a Marvel Studio development from everything I've read.

Yes, it is a Marvel film, but some of the characters in the Runaways will have to be changed due to Fox. At least one of the characters is a mutant and another is the child of a Super-Skrull and has the Fantastic Four's powers.

As you know, Fox owns the rights to mutants and to the FF. So, Fox screws everything up for Marvel again.

Runaways seemed last year like a project that was starting to take off at Marvel, but it has been relatively quiet in the past few months. That’s been the case, says screenwriter Drew Pearce, because The Avengers became the all-consuming ‘team movie’ priority at Marvel. But Runaways might not be dead yet.

Pearce wrote the Runaways script that Peter Sollet (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) was set to direct before the project was back-burnered at Marvel last year. (The screenwriter is also co-writing Iron Man 3 with Shane Black.)

At a screenwriting panel during Empire’s Big screen fest in the UK, the screenwriter said that Runaways isn’t dead, but that it remains in a holding pattern.

Basically, ‘The Avengers’ came along and everything else at Marvel got put on hold for a year. But the script is there, we’re good go. It’s kind of like [being] at the airport when you’re waiting for your slot to take off with Marvel, and we’re hoping we get a slot next year. Fingers crossed. They’re very happy with it, so hopefully it happens.
