Yep, is this another 'quote taken out of context' situation.

That is nothing that we haven't heard before, so it is possible that he is just stating what has been said before by Warner, not any "inside" information that he has.

What other context is there for this quote?

"The rumor is that Warner is coming aboard soon, that will make it awfully tough for HD DVD to stay in this game." - Michael Burns, vice-chairman of studio Lionsgate

I disagree 100% with your comment. Bill "sounds" very possitive! The Warner decision will not be made into early 2008, but everything points towards a decison to go Blu-ray exclusive

Does seem clear, but was reacting to Bill hunt

I think this is one of those "you have to spend money to make money" deals. The other studios would make money as a result, more so if they have patents. They would potentaly lose a whole bunch of money if the BDA does nothing and WB goes HD DVD. So if the BDA does pay (which I find nothing wrong with at this point, after the Paramount deal) Warner, It would help all BDA suporting companies.

He reports:

Sources are telling us that hints by both sides that Warner is warming to their camp (including some in the Business Week piece) are premature - the studio is watching sales closely and isn't likely to make any changes in their dual-format support strategy until early 2008 at the earliest.

Nobody has claimed Warner is going to go exclusive in 2007.

No, it's one in an increasingly long line of industry insiders hinting Warner are strongly favouring Blu, but still giving HD-DVD one last chance this Q4, with cheap players.

Unfortunately for them they've been countered by the PS3, while the rumoured $299 BD player could be the last straw.

These internet rumours and hints maybe new for the AV world, but anyone who's followed videogaming over recent years realises theirs no smoke without fire.

It seems quite clear to me HD-DVD realise they're on borrowed time, the $99 A2 sale made that quite clear.

Right now I'm 99% certain WB will go Blu-ray exclusive early next year. It's now so obvious this is what the AV world needs, if WB goes against all logic they will have to suffer the wrath of consumers for stalling and eventually killing both formats. WB and co will have to fall back on declining DVD sales, as one things for certain, it will be 5, possibly 10 years before the average guy on the street will have the capability to download HD movies.

I'm curious as to why WB doesn't just end this war by going BD sooner than later. They have already indicated they only want to release in one format, and I believe they have indicated they want the war over with.

If they were to go Blu, the war would effectively be over. If they were to go red, they would effectively be prolonging the war for months, maybe years.

With these two possibilities, I can't believe they are still sitting on the fence. WB has frequently taken a leadership role in the past. It's time they did now by going Blu without delay.

I think more precisely that a non - insider presented this as fact, and Wicky (or another Insider) only specified that this kind of things is common practice, without confirming or denying things.

Possibly greed.

As long as HD-DVD hangs alive with almost nothing going for it and the Neilsen's show ho-hum margins like this week with BD 58 and HD-DVD 42...why not milk both sides for as long as you can?

Yeah, I know. BD "won the week." Whoopdee-doo.

But I would think Warner would be looking to see one side pull away with consistent, authoritative leads along the lines of 70:30 and past that before they would outright take a side and finish it.

Believe me: I'm with you all the way on it, but I think they need to see more than 60:40 leads or even less than that strung along.

Isn't it high time BD starts hitting 70:30, 80:20, and beyond and not look back? I'm really getting tired of HD-DVD somehow holding close with so little myself.

Everyone knows. That's why they're so critical and coveted.

Except the precedent for them starts as a full HD-DVD supporter and still in my eyes a quasi HD-DVD supporter to this day. They've still witheld some exclusives from Blu and they continue to insist on mostly doing HD-DVD ports for the most part.

That's why I'm intruiged by all this but I'm hardly doing cartwheels over it.
