100% this.

McKellen = Gandalf

It's that simple as far as I'm concerned.

You know, when I posted this yesterday I had the feeling that they would be removed quickly, and that is just what happened due to studio pressure.

I guess with 'spy reports' its inevitable.

But take my word for it, they looked.............shuweet!

They are gone for me too. If you still see them they are probably cached on your computer.

Nope, they are gone.

I am guessing that they are probably still in your 'Temporary Internet Folder'.

Gotchya.

They looked pretty good, but they are basically what you would expect IMO.
Anyone know if that is the same location they built the Shire before?

Yes, it's the same spot. Including the iconic Birthday Tree.

There's no doubt McKellen will return as Gandalf; he's been hanging out in NZ waiting for this film just be green lit for crying out loud. Don't worry, our Gandalf shall return!

I'm more worried about Christopher Lee coming back as Saruman, as I already said earlier in this thread.

That's a tough one. I remember reading somewhere that he said he is too old to re-play the part (I think he is in his late 80's now). Since he was the perfect guy to play Saruman in LotR, it will be tough to fill his shoes. Jackson will have to include someone as Saruman in the movie, as he plays a pivotal role in the White Council and the events that follow.

Tobin Bell and Ian McDiarmid both come to mind, as does Terence Stamp.

I think the absolute best solution would be to shoot Christopher Lee on the green screen and fly some of the other actors (Ian McKellen for example) out to do those scenes...this could all be done after shooting in NZ is done...besides Gandalf has to go home to England anyways

And besides, Christopher Lee has said he'd be "delighted" to do the scenes in London

Look at the last three questions of the interview

That interview was encouraging, but it is almost two years old. Still, if there is anyway he could still perform (at least for close-ups), that would be great and would provide consistency between the films. That is also why the presence of Ian McKellen, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, and Andy Serkis would be mandatory.

McKellen was here yesterday showing his movie Gods and Monsters at our film Festival. Trust me I don't know how long he can wait. He looks like he's aged 10 years.

If he can't wait then Lee cannot either. Maybe they should be recast. I mean, The Hobbit takes place how long before LotR?

I think its about 50-60 years

I saw McKellen on TV not very long ago promoting The Prisoner for the BBC and he looked fighting fit, Lee on the other hand does look very frail
