Ah, the confusion between the two explains a lot. Alexander was heavily pooped on by critics and audiences alike. 16% at RT.

Brad Pitt wasnt in Alexander though. Did you mean Colin Farrell? Or maybe you are confused because Jolie was in it.

I wasn't, because
[Show spoiler]I didn't get the sense that he actually would. I knew that the dad would go down and get him.

What did make me

But he didn't

I can beat that, I like this movie.

(I give it a 3/5 but for some reason enjoy it more than other 3/5 movies...must be the Beckinsale factor)

[Show spoiler]Six months ago I read The Count of Monte Cristo. It's an epic tale of revenge and retribution set in 19th century France. Today I watched Oldboy, an equally epic tale of revenge spiced with remorse that draws much of its themes from the classic Dumas novel.

Oh Dae-Su is a hapless drunk who on the birthday of his young daughter is held at a police station. His friend bails him out only to lose him minutes later when Oh goes missing. Oh awakes imprisoned in a hotel-like room. His early state of confusion is quickly replaced with anger, followed by fear and then a crushing sense of despair. He goes through the rest of the spectrum one might experience while in confinement for a long time with the only companion being a lone television set. Occasionally a tune plays, gas is released in to his room and he falls unconscious. When he awakes he finds his room cleaned, his hair cut and clothes changed.

After 15 years of this routine and with his escape plan nearing completion, he is inexplicably released. A series of events, long planned, are set in motion and controlled by an unknown puppeteer. With time running out, Oh Dae-Su sets off to avenge himself and discover what past events led to his tormenting 15 year imprisonment.

The script unashamedly draws on many of the themes from The Count of Monte Cristo. It even references the fictional work - a respectful nod to a classic work that has been adapted to all manner of media and translated in dozens of languages since its original serialised publication in 1844. Oldboy is a modern take on the old tale, albeit liberally laced with its own twists and grey characters. It is beyond me to meaningfully compare the two works, but I can say that the novel is an established classic while this lose adaptation is an established classic-to-be, only awaiting its ageing.

4/5
Interesting review. Was this your first viewing? They certainly have a parallel resemblance, but I've never noticed it to that extent. Curious, did it bother you or give you more appreciation for it? I regard Oldboy as one of the best films ever made for its narrative, direction, acting, cinematography and themes. It's a film that never gets old for me.

Btw, does the Vengeance trilogy come with slim blu-ray cases or regular? And did you buy from Amazon or Best Buy? I'm curious if Amazon sells a non-tin version (I don't really like tins or steelbooks). Thanks.

No, it has nothing to do with Kate Beckinsale being in it. It's the amazing script and
[Show spoiler]how the movie plays out once we find out who the real bad guy is
that makes you like it.

I'm working on it. Really. I keep bumping "Must Sees" to the top, and thereby displacing other "Must Sees". I'm stuck in a LOOP damnit.
You're very welcome. I'm sure you would like this one. What is your favorite Criterion?

No explanation necessary! I don't doubt the Squid queue anymore Just glad to see you back to reviewing.

Favorite Criterion? Thats tough, and funny, because there are so many that I actually dislike and think are poorly made films. I enjoyed El Norte, M, Night of the Hunter, Charade, The Third Man and Revanche. I loved Paris, Texas. There are quite a few I havent seen yet though.

10,000 BC

The film that delvors deep into the truth of cavemen, that it were in fact slave cavemen and wolly manmoths that made the pyramids and not the Egyptions, with the help of of Cavemen witches and a saber-tooth tiger. But not only does this deliver the facts, but they are brought to life on screen by the amazingly well developed characters, so devolped in fact I consider them to be 4th Dimentonal as we know by our main character...errrm....well....I think he's called Mr. Caveman, anyway, he has so many moral complexities going on at once. His dad goes, who I think is called Senior Mr. Caveman and then he kills a wooly manmoth by accident and takes credit for it, but then he's village is ruined, and Mrs Caveman is taken. And all this is handled by the great diolauge and fine acting, as we see when Mr. Caveman lets the tiger free, but asks only one thing of the tiger, not to get eaten. You feel a geniuine tremble in his voice as you can really tell, that he doesn't really want to get eaten by the tiger. Finest film making, at it's finest

Hey Bearcat, have you seen THIS Paul Walker movie? Another member posted the link and I figured I'd post it here so you can check it out one day

Apparently
[Show spoiler]there's a scene where the T-Rex calls the girl from a pay phone.
That's brilliant!

Nice. Most Criterion movies aren't for everyone and there are a few I loathe myself (i.e. most of Wes Anderson's films) and some I just don't care for (i.e. Fear and Loathing, Armageddon). Just wondered where your interests lie (I still think you'll enjoy EM).

Good thing then, because if you had heard the dialog you would have actually died from the laughter

The entire movie is on Youtube

Here's the plot:

Quote:
[Show spoiler]The low budget film centers around the life of small town high school student Tammy. Michael, Tammy's boyfriend, is frequently harassed by a local bully named Billy who is obsessed with Tammy. One day Billy and his thugs throw Michael into wild Animal Park where lions run loose. A lion mauls Michael and he is left in a state of comatose. He is brought to a hospital were his intoxicated uncle watches over him. Dr. Wachenstein and his assistant Helga declare Michael dead so they can use his brain to control an animatronic dinosaur that Wachenstein has created. After his brain is installed Michael escapes and wreaks vengeance on his high school tormentors and is reunited with his sweetheart Tammy. [1] She realizes the dinosaur is Michael and begins a search to find a more suitable body for him. However Dr. Wachenstein is in hot pursuit of his creation. This leads to a chase scene that ends with Michael killing the doctor. Police officers open fire and destroy the mechanical dinosaur. Tammy manages to recover Michael’s brain. In the end she takes it home with her and hooks his brain up to her computer and video camera which allows him to see her perform a striptease for him.

That last sentence has to be the best thing I have ever read
