I've been jumping on and off for a little while now, but I plan to go back and read your review and Surf's notes and see if I have anything to add later or tomorrow

It's Blooms best role because he only has to say like 50 words in the entire film
He does good with the expressive acting and doesn't have to worry about being great with the parts requiring dialog (because he's not very good at it) since he has so little for a 3+ hour movie.

We can go down the list one by one, so that each of us has a "turn" to have everyone watch that member's "pick of the week". Then we all must put forth modest effort to watch it by the end of the week so we can spend the next week discussing it.

Reasonable?
Sounds good to me.

In the Name of the Father

Director: Jim Sheridan
Writers: Gerry Conlon and Terry George
Mains: Daniel Day-Lewis, Pete Postlethwaite and Alison Crosbie

"I'm an innocent man. I spent 15 years in prison for something I didn't do".

Plot: Gerry Conlon (Daniel Day-Lewis) is a young man that lives a life with no rules. Him and his family are living through a time of war between the Irish and the British government. G. Conlon is mistaken for a the leader of a terrorist group that bombed a local shop killing 5 people. The government has forced him to confess, leading up to the arrest of his entire family. Now behind bars he can face his father Giuseppe Conlon (Pete Postlethwaite) that isnt proud of what he has become as a person, in addition they are trying to prove their innocents knowing that they have been wrongfully and illegally accused. Emotions run deep character driven movie!

My Take: Wow, this makes Shawshank Redemption look like crap (i still like it though). This movie is perfect in every way. It starts off by showing you the life of Gerry Conlon and the lives of his family, so the character development is beyond top notch. The acting....... OMG is all im going to say. I loved every minute of this movie from beginning to end. What i especially liked was the discussions Gerry and Giuseppe had in their cells. Every emotion that has build up as a child has come out during this time of depression and stress and it gets extremely intense. Pete Postlethwaite has proven time after time that he is a very solid supporting actor and he doest fall short AT ALL in this film. On the other hand Daniel Day-Lewis's performance was freaking OUTSTANDING. Every time he spoke it felt authentic and every emotional scene i felt 100% where he was coming from, it was as if i was living his life through his own eyes. This guy is talented for sure and delivers and unforgettable performance. I also loved the deep themes of regret and forgiveness. I dont wanna give the movie away because its truly a gem.

Conclusion: This movie has instantly made it to my top 25 (i just gotta figure out which movie to boot ). It packs a very talented cast (overly talented) and well written story. Fans of the Shawshank Redemption will easily enjoy this little gem and see what a Great movie truly is. Everything from the opening scene, to the jailhouse scenes to the ending are full of emotions and well performed. I will never forget the effect this movie had on me and i will always hold it in a very special place (somewhere in my top 25 lol). Great movie in every way.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

If you cant watch a box office hit and a critically acclaimed movie then you are without a doubt a versatile movie watcher which imo is the best person to listen to for recommendations. (A PAID CRITIC) Al the Strange and Surf seem like the only guys that can sit and watch a "film" and a "movie".

Once again im not trying to offend anyone im just stating my opinion. I like reading this thread because of the huge difference in taste and thats it.

We do it every time a movie with a lot of hype comes out? Well, it wouldn't be done if ppl didn't go see a film and then immediately say it's the best film ever made, as they did with Avatar and Inception. It's the overblown statements that raise eyebrows, not the fact that many ppl seem to enjoy the films. Some of us are just movie snobs? What, pray tell, is a movie snob to you? If memory serves correctly, you bought up practically the whole Criterion collection without having seen them. Does that make you a movie snob as well? Or, does it just make you a movie fan?

Where Eagles Dare

What a ridiculous movie. You really need to prepare to get a truck load of frommage when you sit down and watch this.

Richard Burton plays the ice-in-his-veins British military intelligence officer and Clint Eastwood is the ruthless American Ranger
[Show spoiler](who pretty much kills every soldier in the Wehrmacht.
Of course, as with pretty much all sixties Second World War flicks, there's a gorgeous blond who knows how to fit a sweater.

This could best be described as a guilty pleasure. It's a little long at 155 minutes. But at least it's better than Von Ryan's Express.

Thanks for the feedback and your thorough notes. Much appreciated.
Yes! Perfectly stated! I can still vividly remember his dark circles under his eyes at the beginning (when he's just moping around his blacksmith area and sitting depressed by his wife's grave). Like I said, I admittedly may be giving Bloom a pass in the final act -- so your points there are very valid. And yes! Sheen was great. Such a slimy priest, who I guess was pretty conventional for the time, but looking back now, its shocking to see that what he did was the norm! That other priest dude said it perfectly: "I ask myself, would Christ do it thusly?"

Another great sequence I loved was when Neeson comes to see Balian, walks over to an edge of the property and looks down to a house where Neeson once lived with Balian's mother. All of a sudden, the screen gets bright, the overcast becomes sunny, you see a young Neeson playing with Balian's mother who is laughing in the yard...and then...geniusly, Scott has the light go back to a dark, dreary, overcast European day, and the camera fixes on Neeson's face as it smile evaporates. He does a similar sequence in the same spot with Bloom, that works just as good (especially the facial transition at the end). Absolutely A+.

Dang it Two!! Its 11:37pm and you're going to make me put this film on now!! I"ll be up till 3am!!!

Buried

I went in to see it as a curiousity, wondered how the hell the movie would keep you interested for an hour and a half, that only takes place in a coffin starring one man. Some pretty smart camera work and a great performance by Ryan Reynolds is how it is done. A man trapped in a coffin dealing with desperate kidnappers, unbelievable bureaucracy and such can be quit intense, who knew. A few minor things about the movie I didn't like, I wasn't very impressed by the score either, but all in all it's worth seeing it once.

8/10

Predators.

Contrary to popular beleive, I quiet enjoyed this movie.
It wasnt a masterpiece for sure but going into the movie I knew what to expect, and as a result, I enjoyed the movie a lot.
Story kept my interest all the way, acting was decent, effects nice, action intence enough (loved the opening falling scene).
The signature of Rodrigues was evident.

As it stands, I would give the movie
4.5/5

50 words in the entire film? haha. yeah he doesn't have as many lines as you'd expect, but does have a fair amount. as Two points out, the beginning is easily his stronger half, and he does have very few lines there, as he is in the depressed mode. later on, he does talk to the
[Show spoiler]King, Jeremy Irons, the Casino Royale chick <- cooler name for her, as well as new recruits towards the end
. I'm definitely not the biggest Bloom fan -- hated him in Troy. But he's at least decent (For me) here and the other performances and aspects (direction, score, etc, all the stuff Two summed up very nicely) are what grab me.

It's the best part of the day to be watching a movie. Go on, do it! If you don't, Bloom will pout at you with those sad eyes...

I can see how certain women wouldn't dig it. It does have the whole

. I didn't press for her reasoning
