Memento.

First time viewing. On blu ray by the way.
To put it short, this movie F@#$ with my mind.
I need to see it a couple of more times just to get whats going on.

In a more long way, this movie was very differrent. Attention to detail was amazing. I felt reallly sorry t=for the guy and could actually feel his constant pain.

Rating for the first time
4.5/5

P.S. I am sure it will go up to 5/5 on multiple viewings once I figure out WTF goes on on the screen.

Enough said.
Wow -- I make this same point, but reverse the films in the argument!

IMO, if we were to travel back in time to 1800, we wouldn't see a Jack Sparrow , we'd see a Jack Aubrey! Enough said. I dig realism.

Ok, sure... it might be more realistic, but that doesn't make the movie better. I was extremely bored throughout 60% of the film and I felt that the acting and script were sub par. Also, there were lots of characters I never felt attatched to... which equates to lack of character development. There are so many negatives about this movie that there's no way it could ever compare to POtC.

Curse of the Black Pearl > Far Side of the World

(But let's be fair, they're very different movies)

Dont get me wrong -- I think your view is perfectly reasonable and valid, just disagree. Also, the acting was subpar?? compared to Jack Sparrow??

I like POTC -- I own it. I just dont like it near as much as MAC. In a different league. I like POTC for the same reason I like National Treasure and other fantasy adventure flicks -- just for fun, not for serious dramatic value. When I'm watching a historic movie like a pirate movie, if I'm convinced and think "this could have actually happened, just like in this film", then I'm fully engaged!

Yeah.
Although I will be completely honest with you, I hate both movies.
Its just that I hate the far side of the world indefinitely more when compared to dead manns chest.

what's that? you're jealous that I like both films? or that I can individually assess each and score them differently like different entrees from a menu?

I wasn't actually asking.

I've never seen Master and Commander, but I love Curse of the Black Pearl (actually, I love all three of the POTC movies).

I like this one more every time I see it. Great story, solid direction, great score and some great cinematography showing the gorgeous, lush African landscape. I'm a fan of Djimon Hounsou, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Connelly and they all put forth great performances. I love the chemistry between Connelly and DiCaprio and everytime I watch this, I find myself
[Show spoiler]hoping that they'll get together! But of course that doesn't happen. It's tragic, but he dies a beautiful death, acting on the goodness in his heart beneath his tough exterior and greedy motives, reuniting a father and son and saving their lives. In the end, he gives his blood back to the land that he calls home. I love his last shot where he's laying against rock in the warm sun high up on a beautiful hillside, watching the sunset. A beautiful death indeed.
dude that's freaky -- I went to reply to your review, but then clicked on your spoiler and then realized you typed EXACTLY what I was going to say (about the sunset) Fantastic film. Loved it. Gutwrenching. All of the above...once my facial muscles stopped ceasing up from over-cringing 35 minutes in from Dicaprio's accent: "Danny Aaaarchhheeerrrrrrrrrrr. A RRR C H E RRRRRRRR"

I guess I can see why people think the acting/supporting acting was bad. However, I think the supporting characters' emotions (fear, guilt, etc) could be conveyed by someone with a robotic-like or a very stiff-like personna, which seemed to be what the supporting characters had.

Film in general:

Good acting or bad acting, this film is one of a kind. I can't see how anyone wouldn't think that. Can anyone else name me a film with an old senior/veteran biggot in fear of
[Show spoiler]change in his neighborhood
and the resulting character arc he goes through, which involves modern and relevant raw/nonPC dialogue?

Brilliant film, IMO.

Haha that's awesome. I've never really had a problem with his accent in this film, I think he pulls it off rather well.

Awesome experience watching this for the first time. Top performance by Guy Pierce. And the best part is, it does improve with a second viewing.

Pretty specific criteria there.

If you want to bring it back to a more broad theme of character growth, racism and sacrifice, there are many films that do it better. But that's neither here nor there. You shouldn't have to compare one film to another as a justification of its quality. It ought to stand on its own and Gran Torino is weak in some areas while strong in others. Certainly not a complete package.

That is how I felt about M&C when I saw it; didn't catch my interest that much. As a aficionado of all things unrealistic and fantastic, POTC interested me a lot more.

there are films of these genres that do have noticeably bad acting-- but this isn't one of them
Here's some cases where the acting's incredibly subjective!

that's the absolute beauty of PoTC (Curse of the Black Pearl for the most part). And it's done so well, so perfectly in all its aspects, that it's hard to argue its magnificence. Jack Sparrow, sorry.... CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow is a legend.
