I think they need to play a little catch up on pricing. That article in there stating that consumers are choosing HD-DVD because of price... what evidence supports that. Not to mention, the lowest Samsung model is only $40 more than the lowest price Poshiba 1080P model. $40 is a drop in the bucket to go from Red to Blu.

Same applies to SM3 due to it being in the 40gb PS3.

As awesome as the weekly ratio is, I do not understand how it is only 3:1 given the relative values of sales of the top 10 titles. Are the catalogue titles not selling on BD at all?

Or is it something else?

That is only a $60 difference, plus you get your movie in 1080p and not 1080i (granted it can not play profile 1.1...)

Still, that article seems like BS when you look at the actual facts! Plus what about the prices dropping so much? And DVD sales are still so strong I think that is a bigger threat to Blu-ray than HD DVD is!
Just as in politics, environmental studies and everything else... this HD-DVD leaning study is bought and sold. There is very little true independent, unbiased research these days, including whatever bullshit your favorite college professor tried to sell you back in the day. It's all crap.

Just at the data and decide for yourself. I'd rather trust my lying eyes than some jughead's "study".

I always wonder about this. If HD downloads do take off, MS has to contend with Apple to begin with. Apple has disney and pixar in their pocket while MS has only managed to piss of BD studios big time. Secondly, even if they can get on good terms with the studios, how do they realistically intend to beat iTunes?

I really think it is all about slowing down PS3 adoption. When one has a last-gen disc drive while your big competitor not only has a next gen drive but can also spur adoption of the console via a cutting-edge movie-format value-proposition, your choice is clear: FUD the movie-format to hell and back.

Even if the format wins ultimately, it would be at a much higher cost while it costs you almost nothing. And if the war is a stalemate, the competitive console has to be re-engineered with a dual format drive, driving up costs.

And if in the process you destroy HDM, ah well... collateral damage.

Scumbags.

No change from last week.

Though I know one or both upticked by 1 point within the last couple of weeks.

Hold on, the article doesn't say that exactly. It predicts that they WILL choose HD-DVD not that they are. It was a poll that attempted to target "mainstream consumers" who were likely to buy HDTVs in the next 6 months or so. It is NOT based on actuals.

Must not have read it close enough, good... because nothing HD-DVD ever comes up with is ACTUAL, it's always BS.

If my top 10 is 90:10, total count of 100,000

The rest is 60:40, total count of 100,000

End result? 75:25

Welcome to this week.

You can't judge by the top 10, because it contains 4 times as many BD titles as HD DVD titles, but there aren't 4 times as many BD titles on sale, so it's not a representative sample.

What is more accurate is to compare the two top 5s:
BD - 100, 37.46, 10.51, 7.40, 6.77, Total 162.14
then scale the HD by 0.1238:
HD DVD - 12.38, 7.49, 4.46, 2.32, 2.15, Total 28.8

This gives an 84:16 ratio, but if you compare the ratio of the 5th place titles, it is only 75:25. We can expect the ratio lower down to be more like the YTD figure of 65:35, which is what pulls down the overall ratio from the 84:16 of the top 5 down to the week's ratio of 76:24.

Simple.

10-12+ free HDDVDs when you purchase a A30. The way they are being handled is such that they are being counted in the Nielsens. It is enough to keep the bottom rung titles in the zone to increase weekly sales; however, not enough to put any of them in the top 10 except for the couple/few that are always there.

It really is despicable and under handed to try and artificially change the numbers this way. At least with Blu-ray they use a mail in thing so the five free discs do not count.

Blu-ray would have probably hit 85-90% last week if it weren't for this deviousness. I'm all for BOGO's to combat big releases because they are titles that sell for _something_ but _free_ titles that have no revenue and people are only picking up because they are _free_ should not be counted.

We need those Ocean's 13 numbers!!!

Here's a theory I got about the Bourne movie...
Everyones worried about this one but it could be HD-DVD's worse enemy. You see, I believe this will cut into the Harry Potters numbers on the HD-DVD side as most people don't buy every movie and will have to choose one or the other... and what we need now is high ratio Warner titles.

Also... I am convinced Planet Earth is being accidentally picked up by unsuspecting DVD users. At these number, PE should be one of the top sellers on any HD format right now. Why no press release about it? Because Nielson doesn't track returns....

Thumbs up

ah, I see. I underestimated the volume of catalogue sales relative to volume of new ones in my rough calc.

The Simpsons movie did $500M in world wide ticket sales. This is going to be a monster on Blu-ray with all the PS3 fans. It was made for them...
