Google Trends: The REAL facts

Everybody knows that on the website of "The Product Wars fought on Amazon.com", there is a graph showing how many times the word Blu-ray is searched on Google, compared to HD DVD ( http://www.eproductwars.com/dvd/ )... But we all know that the results are biaised because they only look for one way to write it !

I found a way to compare ALL the different way to spell the two technologies, and the result is, obviously, more logical !

here it is !

Aahh, that seems more like it... I knew there was something screwy with that.

All the new PS3 owners are looking up Blu-ray to decide what they want to buy for movies.

What does the chart represent...???

Based on what I see when I click on the link...this chart is no better than any other biased chart.

Where are the 9-1 or 7-3 ratios?

Nielsen's the only way to go...

Nielsen's the only way to go...

The chart represents web search interest. its a snapshot on what people are thinking. Its not comparable to Nielsen numbers.

Nice work. I wish everyone took such care with their usage of data.

Too bad that major media outlets don't actually care about the accuracy or integrity of their data, only the story they want to tell.

This is based on # of Google-based searched not on actual sales.

Actually, as far as I can tell, the chart shows HD-DVD winning pretty much everywhere.

So, how's this supposed to help a Blu cause?

How exactly do you get that from a chart that shows blu winning everywhere? You're probably looking at the worng graph. The OP was deriding the first chart as inaccurate then created there own which is more accurate. Read the right one.

It isn't really about "winning" it's a gauge of curiousity based on internet searches. In Japan there could be several anomalies. 1) Blu is dominant there so maybe people are searching because they already know about blu and truly wonder what HD-DVD even is... how many Americans Google McDonald's or WalMart? 2) Google is not the prime search engine in Japan so their numbers may be off.

I'm looking at the second link that was supposed to be more accurate. For every country, every city, and every language, I'm seeing a rather long red bar and a rather short blue bar. On the total for the past 12 months, it shows consistently the HD-DVD bar far above the blu.

Here's a screenshot:

So, as you see, the red is clearly winning over all the blue.

Unless I'm reading it seriously wrong and the numbers closer to 0 are the winners... but as far as I know, the chart is plotting number of searches, not ranks.

You need to put the parenthesis back around the search terms.

As the other guy said, you've obviously done something to the search criteria to botch the results, not saying it was intentional. None of us gets that when we just click the link and look at it. It shows the opposite... just like everyone is telling you.

HD-DVD has the top 10 and top 25....but BD smokes them in the top 100 sales...

we win because we have an impact in the top 100 sales being that we don't rely on a select number of titles for a win....we have what people call a library of quality options
