What's up with the end while we're asking what's up with this movie? I mean the very end.
i was too which i think is why i laughed because it was deeply odd and disturbing, but the voice being as deep as it was made me laugh. probably doesn't help that i've seen Fantastic Mr. Fox about 10 times and all the voices there are 'higher' and lighter, so having a deep voice for a fox struck me as incredibly off and hilarious

all i really remember is the last image, and not the 5-10 minutes before that.

but i don't believe the film has an ending that is nailed down. it's left open to interpretation, but what the visuals mean or might be saying i didn't really have a clue until i read some articles (i know surfdude gave me a link to a great one, i'll try and find it about 300 pages ago by now ) which helped point some things out.

History of the World Part 1

Here it is, a film about everything. A masterful epic that spans countless millennia, effectively chronicling the entire history of mankind! It provides an insightful view on who we are, where we came from, and where we’re going.

…my God, our history is totally f***ed up!

Coming from Mel Brooks, this film touches upon just a few key historical backdrops to present a series of comedic sketches. It’s a little bit weak in terms of story and structure, as the film hops along from one antic to another without any really strong connection between events. And there are tons of stuff in history that never even gets touched upon. Let’s face it, it’s not a history lesson (although all segments do focus on a common theme about the relationship between poor people and people in power).

Nope, for the most part, this is about the comedy, and it is pretty darn strong. Dialogue is often hilarious (and pretty darn rude), and there are many good jokes. There’s even a couple of amusing musical numbers. The jokes come at a nice steady rate. And at the same time, it does make pretty good fun of history and ancient cultures; maybe not historically accurate or anything, but it is a little smarter than the average film (certainly beats the crap outta “Year One” ).

This film is solidly-made. Photography is not particularly groundbreaking or anything, but it does have its moments. Acting is very zany and over-the-top, and I think it’s awesome. Production value shows its limitations here and there, but it is impressive in some scenes.

So when will Part 2 come out?!!
[Show spoiler]I wanna see Hitler on ice and Jews in space!

4/5 (entertainment: 4.5/5, story: 3/5, film: 3.5/5)

Recommendation: Mel Brooks fans should dig it. Anybody else who enjoys a good slappy comedy should check it out at least once.

This Blu-Ray is nice. The picture quality is clean, sharp, and detailed. Colors and contrast aren’t the best, but for this film it is a huge improvement over the DVD on all accounts. Sound quality is clearer than I remember, but still shows its limitations.

PQ: 4/5, AQ: 4/5

I agree that the story/characters have their weaknesses, but it's not necessary to enjoy the film. Heck, most of my favorites aren't that deep.
Like I said, Thinking Man's Blockbuster

It's probably the most complicated movie a lot of people who are just into big blockbusters will ever see. Or maybe it might inspire some people to be open to other, smaller movies that make you think and REALLY scratch your head (Triangle )

The New World

Another one of Malicks masterpeices.
His portrait of nature is perfect. One of the best cinematographies I have ever seen.

His storielines are not overexagurated, they protrait real life, as emotional and at the same time boring as they are. They are real stories to put in a short.

As for the ending, it was perfect. I appeciated Malick indefinitely for him making the choice that
[Show spoiler]the girl should choose her husband who supported her rather than his "so called" love

To me, movies like this which show what real life really is about are equal to 1000 Saving Private Ryans, which analyze with how a person should deal with man-made problems.

Ah yes. I believe it's because he gives a lot of time to multiple characters, so it's very hard to pick just one out.

The Fighter (2010)

The comparisons have been made through and through again before I had seen this film. When the trailer debuted many people compared it to the classic Rocky or Ron Howard's take on boxing in Cinderella Man. While I've never been a huge fan of Rocky, I've always personally enjoyed Cinderella Man on many levels. While The Fighter is a story that's been told on paper before, it doesn't make the journey any less exciting.

The strongest aspect of The Fighter is undoubtably the performance of the cast. In what may be the strongest performance of Christian Bale's career, he absolutely nails the character of Dicky. Trying to come up with a sentence to describe the nature of Dicky is borderline impossible. Dicky bounces around camera with an exuberant personality that's covers the entire emotional spectrum. Not to be outdone is a stellar performance from Melissa Leo as Alice, the mother of Dicky and Micky. Leo plays an intimidating character who is the essentially the heart and soul of the entire Eklund family. This is played out in that wherever Alice goes, her entire entourage of daughters follow her around. Not to mention that the husband is absolutely terrified of her. It's also important to note that one of the daughters is none other than the sister of Conan O'Brien, and there is no mistaking as they look exactly the same. Amy Adams gives a solid role as Micky's girlfriend and is able to hold her own ground. Mark Wahlberg is another story, sadly. I quite frankly didn't like his acting at all. Compared to Bale, Leo, and Adams -- his is noticeably worse.

While the story has inevitably been told before, The Fighter is hardly predictable. Sure we know the ending, but we have absolutely no idea how the journey is going to unfold or what turns it's going to take. This alone is what impressed me the most and shows how strong of a film it is. At multiple points in the film I wanted to jump to conclusions and guess where the film would go, only to be completely wrong.

David O. Russel's direction for the most part was very well executed. There would only be a few things that I didn't particularly like, but that would be nitpicking to it's finest. Russel has crafted a fantastic film in The Fighter which contains a great cast with great peformances (minus Wahlberg) and a story that takes on an exhilarating ride, even when we know the destination.

4.5/5

Closer

Directed by Mike Nicholls
Starring Clive Owen, Natalie Portman, Jude Law and Julia Roberts
104 minutes

I used to confuse this film with Control (a Joy Division biopic), because Closer is also the name of Joy Division's last studio album.

Mike Nichols (The Graduate) was in his 70s when he directed Closer and times have changed a lot since the days of The Graduate (1967). Both are excellent films though, despite the change.

What elevates Closer from the pack is the writing. Patrick Marber wrote the play and also adapted the screenplay. If you have ever seen a TV series starring Steve Coogan, Marber probably wrote it. He has a talent for writing comedy and it's the type of comedy I like. That said, Closer is not a comedy; it's a drama with plenty of humor in it.

Good actors can't really succeed without good writing, but this has both. All four do good work here. It has the feel of a Woody Allen film in some ways and also reminds me of Glengarry Glen Ross as both were adapted from plays. The dialogue comes at you at a fast pace and the actors play off one another well. Some conversations are a joy to experience.

Both men sleep with both women (not at the same time) and the story deals with the relationships in an amusing way. The main point of the film is to show how much people lie to one another. Even when they think they are speaking absolute truth, it often turns out to be a lie. Are they saying these things to convince themselves of their good intentions? Are lies preferable to truth in some instances?

The 104 minutes seem to pass very quickly. I was caught up in the story and the lives of these four people. It's more a romantic drama than a romantic comedy, despite the witty lines that appear throughout the story.

I'm not sure which character I liked the most. They all have redeeming qualities. It's just a fun thing to experience and the writing is smart. I think the actors enjoyed delivering this wonderful dialogue. Owen and Portman received Oscar nominations for their performances.

4.5/5

Tangled - I'm not a fan of Disney princess movies in the slightest. Though, I may end up watching it, because every once in a while my friends and I have to let the girls pick a movie and they might pick this.

Just FYI, this aint you ordinary Disney Princess. She beats the crap out of a few people with a frying pan. And the movie has large scale chase and fight scenes that rival How to Train your Dragon and Indianna Jones. She's not a meek and adorable cutey. She's a badass that uses her long hair as a weapon/whip/repelling rope and more.
