I remember when my local West Coast video (which no longer exists) rented game systems. Didn't Blockbuster rent other game systems years ago? Hopefully this will educate the consumers on the availability of the PS3 as a movie system.

Blockbuster rented Nintendo and PS1 many years ago.
When I saw that Box sitting in the window behind counter I was pretty stoked.I asked the manager if I could get some pics of it and he gave me the go ahead .I then went into "Sell blu-ray talk" letting customers in line know what there missing not owning a blu-ray player..It was pretty fun.

I noticed the same package deal at the Block Buster in Houston. I don't think BB knows what it is getting itself into. Can you imagine someone renting the PS3 and trying to hook it up to a 720p setup, when the previous renter hooked it up to his 1080p setup. He/she is going to get pissed off when they don't get a picture due to the fact the PS3 needs to be reset. Hell, I had the PS3 since in came out and I just figured this out three months ago when I was trying to hook it up for my nephew to play on his TV with standard AV cables. I think it is pretty awesome they are so BLU, but I think the overall process of renting PS3's is a big mistake (especially when most of the kids that work there are M$ fanboys)...IMO

Blockbuster online is $18/month for 5 instore rentals/month so you will get 25 instore rentals plus all of the online (3 out at a time) rentals by saving the $100 to go with a regular 80gb PS3.

HDMI cable = $10 TOPS for the 3' Cable that is probably included in this pack.
Remote Control = $25, but not really required since you can use the controller, but we will count it.
1 game = $0 Motorstorm is included in both units
1 movie = constant BOGO sales make the value of a Blu Ray movie at $15-$20 plus you aren't saddled with a crappy movie. (Surfs Up? Bleh.)

So, not counting the rentals the extra come out to be $50-$60 tops. Three months of blockbuster online gets you 15 instore rentals plus three out at a time.

It's not a terrible deal for those who like bundles, but building your own piecemeal is probably a better idea. This is not even factoring in that you can order the PS3 off Amazon and save another $40 in tax and/or find bundles at the $499 price that are close, or even better, than this one.

Some Great points yet I think it will be a very good thing for Blu.
I'm sure there will be a someone familiar at store giving consumers info needed for hook up and compatibility with there current TV /resolution.
It may be a stupid proof PS3 rental unit that has a infomercial in the hard drive for power up..I'm sure sony has figured it out.

I have no doubt that it would be a very good thing for BLU. I am all for it. Anyway to get the PS3 in more consumer hands and letting them experience the beautiful world we call BLU...I am all for that. But lets be honest here...Blockbuster employees do not work for the Geek Squad on the side...and for someone that isn't very tech savvy...the PS3 can be a very intimidating beast. I still remember the feeling of pulling it out of the box last November at 2 am. It just looks and smells next-gen. IMO, it is not that the average consumer doesn't want to go next-gen...i just think the average consumers are intimidated by next-gen. I think the average consumer looks at next-gen the way the baby boomers look at computers. They just have that fear in their eyes that they will never be able to understand how to "work" it. They are used to pulling their DVD out of the case, popping it into their $49 DVD player and it going straight to the DVD menu. Now if Sony and Blockbuster figure out a way to program the PS3 to have a limited XMB, or to just program it to completely bypass the XMB all together and go straight into movie play or game play, then I think it will be an enjoyable experience for the masses. But for the average consumer to have to spend several hours trying to figure out how to operate the $15 PS3 rental, I think that it might be more of a nuisance than an enjoyable experience...I just want everyone to have a positive expereince with BLU!!!

I don't see two games; I see Motorstorm and "Surf's Up", a BD movie. It's still a good deal, though.

Seems simple enough to me to include a white card in the container they will rent the PS3 in with instructions for hooking it up and resetting it. This stuff all looks like good ideas for Sony to me. Both the selling of PS3s and the renting of them. Now people at the front desk should be able to point to the PS3 as a Blu-ray player, and signs in the Blu-ray section could also point out they the sell (and/or rent) the PS3, driving home the point about the PS3 being a Blu-ray player.
