Will we be seeing 100GB Blu-ray discs on the market anytime soon?
Specifically, will there be 100GB Blu-ray discs available to video game developers a similar timeframe ("soon") or are the larger capacity discs not going to make their way into consumers hands until, say, 2008? |

100GB discs would be the domain of recordables (BD-R/RE). The replicated BD-ROM is only specified to DL 50GB.
Since game makers would be using replication to produce their discs, that means they are likely to be limitted to 50GB. But, at this point AFAIK, no game has come on 50GB. So, there is plenty of space to grow for gaming. (Insert bogus argument why DVD is sufficient, here). Gary |

100GB & 200GB are concepts stuck in a lab(s). Until the standard is changed there will be NO 100+GB Disc's. Below is link to one of the more recent "debates" on the subject.

But, recordables are a never-ending update to a spec. Every speed advance, and the introduction of DL into DVD, was an update to a spec. So, for recording if the discs are feasible to be manufactured, there will be burners that can use them. Gary |

A 100GB disc would be bad ass!
The amount of concert or studio footage you could fit on to 1 disc would be great. Espescially if they developed 1 with SA-CD quality audio or better! |

I think that in a few months from now (in the summer) we will see 100GB media from Panasonic and TDK, then from the others maybe SONY first ...
Also many will talk about the 200GB media. Last edited by Dave; 01-13-2007 at 06:49 AM. |

I'm probably oversimplifying this, but when I see stuff like this, it really feels like the sky is indeed the limit for BD.

I just read on AVS Amir has started to big up 60GB dual layer/sided flipper discs for HD DVD, is this an admission that TL isn't actually real.
On the BD side, 100GB should be easy enough for writers, but don't hold out much hope for movies using these discs. TDK have sampled the 200GB BD-R/E disc in production level quantities, so it will only be a matter of time until the B/V diodes catch up and are able to resolve 6 layers. This is the same crew that's been telling us for months that BD's extra space is "overkill, redundant, unecessary," and was "vaporware" outright until BD50's were showing as early as October of last year? Lie after lie after lie. I thought VC-1 meant you didn't need a lot of space? ![]() I guess you can just dial down the bitrates and data rates some more to make it fit. ![]() This the kind of thing that earns contempt and why I'm proactively working towards HD-DVD abolishment. I can't stand the idea that I'd be putting money into the pockets of people like these. Quote:
