Die Hard

  • 1988 | R | 131 Minutes

  • Director: John McTiernan

  • Starring: Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman, Reginald VelJohnson

  • Action | Crime | Thriller

Ah Die Hard. The movie that anytime you see a list about Action movies this one won't be far from the top. It's simple, its straight forward, it's a hell of a lot of fun to watch, its got one of the best action characters around and one of the best villains.

If you don't think Die Hard is awesome then you aren't a real man.
...okay, it's not THAT awesome. But it is a really good movie

The story is one of the best parts of the movie because it is not complex in the slightest. It's straightforward and simple. John comes to LA to see his wife. Bad guys take the people hostage. John has to try and stop them. That's pretty much it. And that is all the movie needs; they understood that this was a simple action flick and that's what they gave us, and it works fantastically

Bruce Willis is, for a lack of a better term, THE MAN as John McClane. Even if you haven't seen the movie, who doesn't know that name? Who doesn't know his catchphrase? Not that many I would guess. Willis gives us a no nonsense, straight to the point performance to compliment the movie itself perfectly. Oh and he shoots stuff and blows things up

Alan Rickman's Hans Gruber is every bit as good a villain as Willis's McClane is a hero. He never comes off as lame or silly as some action movie villains can; throughout the whole movie he is just a, "Wow, this guy would probably actually shoot me through the skull" guy.
[Show spoiler]And he actually does that a few times
It also doesn't hurt that Rickman's voice is perfect for a villainous role

As I mentioned a few weeks back when I reviewed Live Free or Die Hard, I do prefer that one to this movie but its not by that large of a margin.

Rating - 4.5/5

I'll also be watching Collateral (first time) later and possibly The Fugitive tonight. If not tonight then tomorrow.

Exclamation

In recent breaking news, The Wall Street Journal announced today that SquidPuppet Industries International LLC has puchased all of the common stock and senior notes of Maetherion Corporation in a hostile takeover.

When asked for comment about the aquisition, SqidPuppet CEO and Chairman, Mr. Puppet offered an enthusiastic "RIGHT ON!" Mr.Puppet went on to indicate that his plans for the newly aquired subsidiary were "To burn it to the ground".

Obituary:

Armand Mitherion found dead in bathroom. A note found at the scene of the crime indicates that he was distraught over the loss of his company and Squidpuppet Industries' growing monopoly over catch phrases. Although this appears to be a clear case of suicide, foul play is suspected.

Rival chairman Squidpuppet responds with a hearty "Right on!"

Inglorious Bastards

Movie - 5/5
First time I watched it, I hated it as most of Tarantino movies (excepts Kill Bills). But I gave it a second try as I love war movies and wow was I blown away by how good this movie was.

Its just pure artistic creation rather than a movie, unlike any other movie created ever before.
Best way to describe this movie is that it is not a movie truth be told, its theatre at its finest.

That said, this movie surely as sun is not everyones cup of tea, but if its your cup of tea, you will enjoy it tremendously.

PQ - 4/5
It was really good. A real high definition transfer. Nevertheless, I felt it was far from the best available transfers. In particulat, detail wasnt that good and black levels where not that striking. In addittion, the colour palette of this movie was in itself rather limited.

AQ - 4.5/5
Great soundtrack. Gets you immersed in the movie pretty well. Gunshots and explosions sounded great to say the least. Voices where crystal clear.Nothing really to complain about.

Overall - 4.5/5
I hated this movie first time I saw it for whatever reason. Now I get its charm.
Highly recommended for all Tarantino fans and movie lovers alike, as I consider this moviemaking at its finest.
If you are not well known of Tarantino movies, give this a rent first.

Psycho

  • 1960 | R | 109 Minutes

  • Director: Alfred Hitchcock

  • Starring: Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, Vera Miles

  • Horror | Mystery | Thriller

I've never seen the movie before but have always read about how great people think it is. I decided to give it a shot tonight and wish I hadn't wasted my time. Yes, you read that correctly.

I did NOT like the movie.

It was never eerie.

It was never creepy.

It did, however, have one part that made me jump like a little girl.
[Show spoiler]When he comes running out of the room when the detective guy is at the top of the stairs.
That scared the crap out of me!

Besides that though, the rest of the movie was "Is it almost over yet?"

The acting was fine for the main characters, but I personally didn't think they were anything fantastic. Even Perkins who seems to get praised (though I don't know if its because of his performance alone, the character alone or the combination). Either way I don't care because his performance was just fine I thought and the character was not interesting to me in the slightest.

Oh and the famous screeches...they aren't scary/unnerving. The only thing they are is annoying.

Highly disappointed.

To the films credit, it wasn't a badly made film by any means. It was very well made, especially for such a small budget....but that doesn't mean I'm giving its score a bump.

That's exactly the case.

It wasn't a BAD movie (crappy dialog, not well made, stupid story, etc.), I just did not like it.

saw this for the first time as well a few weeks ago, however i loved it. which i personally found surprising because older films tend to not have much impact with me because of the acting and dialogue of the times, but Psycho i thought was brilliant.

great review though Diesel, you make it very clear why you don't like the film, but not because it's badly made, you just didn't like it / didn't connect with it, which is perfectly fine

do you see the connections to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Ed Gein? creepy stuff. and imagine - this was made in 1960! imagine sitting in the theater thinking you're gonna watch a romance (which it appears to at first be) and then near the end
[Show spoiler]have a man jump out with a knife dressed as his mom who is his other personality!
not nearly shocking now, because we've been flooded with oddities in the horror genre, but back then this must have mind mind blowing. but i'm not saying that's not a reason to bump your score, just saying that's one of those moments i would love to have see the audience reaction on opening night

i will be anxious to see the response to this in the morning from the Squidster and others...

Well being an older movie isn't the issue; I watched 12 Angry Men (first example I could think of) and gave it a near perfect score. This one just did not work for me at all.

I probably could have written out a longer review...but what I wrote sums up my thoughts pretty well and got right to the point. Glad it came across the way I intended it to then (it wasn't a "crappy" movie, it just didn't "click" for me), that will lighten the flaming from Squid and the others

I haven't see Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I don't venture into the horror genre that often.

Yea back when this was first released, unless they knew about it before hand, I don't know what sort of marketing the movie had or what people knew prior to release, that would be one hell of a shock in the context of the film because its not something you would expect at all. Even more so since
[Show spoiler]he kills off the "main" character at the half way point and not even in the third act

Looking over some of the extras, it looks like marketing was bloody brilliant for this film. They sold life insurance at the theater entrance, because it was intended to be that darn scary.

[Show spoiler]Killing off the main character halfway through is also a brilliant storytelling device

Actually...I didn't. I understand why people like it and it is so important; the famous screeching (which I mentioned I found annoying and not scary/unnerving), the something like 70 different camera angles for it so it probably took quite a while to shoot all of that, the importance of it since

Collateral

  • 2004 | R | 120 Minutes

  • Director: Michael Mann

  • Starring: Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx

  • Crime | Drama | Thriller

Another first time viewing for me that I really didn't know what it was about besides Cruise was one of the stars.

I didn't love it but I did enjoy it.

The story is about a cab driver who finds himself stuck driving around a contract killer for the night from job to job. Can he save himself and the intended victims? Will the killer finish his job and take out the cab driver as well? Watch it and find out

I liked the story and liked the characters of both Cruise and Foxx and their interaction and "relationship" throughout the movie.

Both of them did fine I thought. The only thing I've seen Foxx in before this is Law Abiding Citizen and he did about the same in this one as in that one: he got the job done. Nothing impressive but nothing detracting.

Cruise was good as well; not as good as in some of his other movies but still solid and an enjoyable performance from him.

The movie's got some pretty predictable things like
[Show spoiler]that Jazz guy, you know he's going to die because he's going to answer the question correctly but leave something out. Bam it happened. You know the final victim is going to be Foxx's woman. Bam it happened. You know he isn't going to kill her because for some inexplicable reason the professional killer won't be able to off a random lawyer and a cab driver, but will be offed himself by said cab driver and that Foxx will live 'happily ever after' with her. Bam it happened.
It's not a movie that succeeds in creating suspense and doesn't do anything to give you any reason to doubt what you assume will happen because it all does happen.

There's also some stuff that makes you scratch your head and go, "Really?" like when
[Show spoiler]Foxx steals the bag and runs not to a crowded public place to try and be a little safer, but through dark places where NO ONE is around. He flips the car and neither of them are hurt in the slightest. Yea they have a little blood on them I think but come on, they RAN AWAY from the crash. And Cruise wasn't even wearing a belt! He should be slightly hurt at least.

That is disappointing as I would have liked for it to throw a curve ball or two at me so that I didn't know what the final set up and ending would be before Vincent even meets Max.

It's still enjoyable like I said, but would be nice if it was a lot less predictable since I didn't feel like this is the kind of movie where it's okay that I know how its going to end before I even watch it like say Transformers; I know the autobots are going to win and Shia will get the girl.

Understandable. I love the montage-style photography (I think it took them two weeks or something to film it). But yeah, the scream is pretty darn shrill, especially on Blu-Ray.

Rating - 3.75/5
It's the same for me, went in with zero expectations and found it good-but-not-great. Given the story it could have certainly benefited from some unusual plot twists. But as it is, I wound up liking it a lot (gave it a 4/5...close enough ).

All that being said, I think it's the one Michael Mann movie I like the best. Most of the other ones feel just okay to me.

Both of them did fine I thought. The only thing I've seen Foxx in before this is Law Abiding Citizen and he did about the same in this one as in that one: he got the job done. Nothing impressive but nothing detracting.

Cruise was good as well; not as good as in some of his other movies but still solid and an enjoyable performance from him.

holy moly Diesel! i firmly believe that both Cruise and Foxx should have been nominated for some type of awards for their roles here. i thought box were terrific! i mean, watch The Last Samurai and then Collateral, or any Cruise film and then Collateral - it's almost like it isn't even him (gray hair helps too ) i thought both were fantastic. especially when Foxx
[Show spoiler]walks in to the club to pretend to be Vincent. he pulled a complete 180 from his quiet, cab driver demeanor

It's not a movie that succeeds in creating suspense and doesn't do anything to give you any reason to doubt what you assume will happen because it all does happen.
wait, wait, wait, wait wait: were you NOT surprised when Vincent decided
[Show spoiler]to kill the Jazz guy?! when they're just sitting talking and then all of a sudden Vincent says somethig about the guys past and his slowly raises his head and his happy demeanor suddenly goes to his face as it's full of fear, anger and rage was awesome and scary
yes the fact that he
[Show spoiler]gets killed
isn't surprising, but how the change in mood in that room changed i didn't expect.

He should be slightly hurt at least.
well look at Mr. Serious "I Need Logic Even Though I Thoroughly Enjoy Over the Top Films Like 'The Fast and the Furious' Franchise and 'Transformers 2: My Bowles Exploded into My Mouth from This Awful, Awful Movie' but 'Collateral' Needs to Be 100% Logical at Every Turn"

There is only one appropriate action possible for this scenario...

"Caddyshack."

The best golfing comedy ever made. In fact...it's the only one I know of besides the sequel, which I heard stinks.

And even after all these years, it's still quite funny. The dialogue is fun, witty, perhaps a little silly, and quite memorable overall. There are few sight gags and just a few silly antics; not as much as a movie like "Airplane" or anything, but enough to keep it funny, entertaining, and somewhat grounded in reality. And with modest amounts of rampant sex and cursing, the film has a bit of an edge to it. It's about as effective as other great 70s comedies like "Vacation."

The story is pretty simple and doesn't realy on a whole lot of conflict or tension. Perhaps this easy-going attitude is what helps make the film work. At its heart though, the movie does feature a cast of great goofy characters and an inherent slobs-vs-snobs theme. In the end, this theme emerges as a subtle message concerning quality of character (is it better to be an angry uptight rich man or a humble free-lovin' poor man? You be the judge).

The film has solid photography, great acting, a seemingly-limited production value, and an interesting (if not dated) soundtrack.

4/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 3.5/5, film: 3.5/5)

Recommendation: Sure, why not?

The Blu-Ray looks pleasingly sharp and detailed with better color and contrast than I remember from this film. Sound quality is good. In fact, I heard dialogue I never distinguished before. But, it's not reference quality or anything.

PQ: 4/5, AQ: 4/5

"Be the ball Danny. Be the ball. ...you're not being the ball Danny."

"I want a cheeseburger, and I want ice cream, and I want potatoes..." "YOU GET NOTHING AND LIKE IT!"

"Don't just stand there, get some glue!"

"WELL?!! WE'RE WAITING!!"
