I have a suspician that many of the Planet Earth and Potter HD DVD sales are actually consumer-mistakes... people thinking they're buying a "high def DVD for their DVD player", not realizing it's a format that won't play on their DVD device.

I see this happen every time I go to best-buy or Target... folks cruising the HD DVD section thinking they're DVDs "for their high definition TV". They're right... to a point of course. Just missing that critical point about needing new hardware to play it.

Actually, today, this being the first time I've ever seen this happen, my order shipped today. I bought 6 in the bogo, 2 orders, and my order of 4 said it was completed and shipped today, and I have a feeling it's due to the holidays, so I imagine I'm not the only one getting orders completed today and will thus add to the Nielson ratings. I'll take a stab at the numbers and say 65:35

I have a pretty bad feeling about the numbers this week, at best I think Blu will win 52:48. In best buy tonight there were 4 people picking up Bourne and the Potter HD-DVDs. Of course I made sure I spoke to my wife nice and loud about HD-DVD getting ready to lose Warner and that it wouldnt be around for very long, but nonetheless my 20 minutes in BB certainly had red all over it.

Bourne is the first decent exclusive title they'e had since Transformers. So you have to figure a lot of the purple crowd will be picking it up in addition to the regular DUDers. I doubt it will be as big as Transformers, so we should be OK but it'll be close.

Im keeping my fingers crossed. I don't want to get too cocky saying we will win because like it or not the Borne Movie was a big hit, and from our experience with Paramount anything can happen. I will be happy as long as we win the week no matter how close the numbers are.

but for the Blu-ray, it says:

Maybe I just don't see the warning for the HD DVD, but assuming I'm not missing it, it is pretty messed up that the version which shouldn't need the warning as much is the one that has it. The HD DVD is very confusing (since people have been sold on DVD players that output HD and others think if they have an HDTV and a DVD player, they must be able to play HD DVDs), so that one definitely should have a warning. The odds of people getting confused and thinking that they can play Blu-ray version in their DVD player is a whole lot lower.

That's been my biggest problem with the name "HD DVD" It's confusing because its recognizable. Blu Ray is definitely something different. There's no real way to confuse it unless you aren't looking.

Quick question. Does anyone have a link to all of the pie charts showing a breakdown
of the Nielsen #'s for the entire year? I remember seeing a post here showing them,
but I can't seem to find it.

Well here is the deal:

55:45 is more realistic than most people realize.

How do I know this?

Bourne was selling VERY well on day one and was on pace to be the highest selling HD movie EVER.

Harry Potter for a little while was actually doing better on HD-DVD than bluray and was slightly below 50:50. However, a few days later, the BD version picked up some steam and had the lead at around 55:45

Im hoping that this trend put Harry Potter at least at 60:40 in favor of blu.

We shall see.

An insider who asked not to be named. Lets just say they have always been reliable in the past.
