Grand Bob started a group here on the forum where we do group reads of Tolkien's books. We were supposed to start The Silmarillion soon, but I haven't seen any posts from him in a while.

A Tolkien art gallery was an oversight from the EE special features, as many artists have attempted to depict Tolkien's world. Having authentic artists and scholars such as Rob Inglis, Wayne Hammond, and Chistina Scull to be involved with special features on the LotR EE's and upcoming Hobbit releases, instead of the usual cast of thousands that are only "casually" involved would add weight and authenticity to the production. Also, it would be appropriate to include Ted Nasmith with the creative team of the Hobbit, as he was the primary Tolkien artist left out of LotR. I believe that his involvement and cooperation with Alan Lee would add immensely to the visual component of the production.

I will try to do the same with the blu-rays on Monday, just watching the movies, eating and using the facilities. Still hope Hobbit will be better than GB is expecting it to be.

Here, here.

I was somewhat disappointed by the design and appearance of 'Minas Tirith' for the LotR films, and feel the Nasmith's look would have been a whole lot better for that magnificent city.

I love to read The Silmarillion, then The Hobbit, then The LOTR in that order. I do this about once a year. Right now I'm about half way through The Fellowship Of The Ring, so I'm about half way done with them.
I occasionally read The Children of Hurin,The Book of Lost Tales,Unfinished Tales, etc. With all the books Christopher Tolkien has edited and published of his father's works, it's pretty overwhelming!
I used to read books by other authors, but here lately I've become a little too obsessed with Tolkien, but it is the best escape from my ordinary life!

Default Tolkien's birthday

Since it was Tolkien's birthday yesterday (Jan. 3rd) I thought I would post this from Dictionary.com:

Quote:
J.R.R. Tolkien was born on January 3, 1892. In honor of the author’s beloved “Lord of the Rings” series of books, we pay tribute to his fantastic creation, the hobbit.

Hobbits are similar to humans, but they are short and have hairy feet. Bilbo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, and Frodo Baggins are the most-well known hobbit examples. In J.R.R. Tolkien’s fiction, they’re the peaceful folk who reside in Middle Earth.

(On a side note, if you’ve ever wanted to know what the “J.R.R.” in Tolkien’s name stands for, here’s the answer.)

As you may have guessed, hobbits are a fictional race born in Tolkien’s imagination. He even created an etymology for the word; hobbit derives from the word “Holbytla,” which means “hole-dweller” in Old English.

Tolkien invented three groups of hobbits. The Harfoots were the smallest of all the hobbits and also the first to enter Eriador, a large region of Middle Earth. The Fallohides are the least numerous of the Hobbits and tall and fair. The Stoors were the last to enter Eriador. They stand out as being the only hobbits that are willing to swim.

Now here’s the fascinating and slightly spooky detail. There are no references to hobbits before Tolkien’s publication, except for one. In 1895, the folklorist Michael Aislabie Denham published a long list of supernatural creatures. Here’s an excerpt:

“. . . nixies, Jinny-burnt-tails, dudmen, hell-hounds, dopple-gangers, boggleboes, bogies, redmen, portunes, grants, hobbits . . .”

While Tolkien was a masterful adapter of mythology and folklore, there isn’t the slightest suggestion that he was aware of this list. Synchronicity, coincidence, or serendipity?

Tolkien’s interest in language predates his career as a professional writer. After World War I, the Oxford English Dictionary was Tolkien’s first employer. His job at the dictionary involved working on the history and etymology of Germanic words that begin with “W.”

Thanks for mentioning the group radagast, I just joined as I've been looking for a reason to re-read the Silmarillion and a place to discuss Tolkien books with like-minded fans.

I read The Hobbit about a year ago and found it to be excellent. Gandalf kicks some ass in it

Ever since i heard they would be doing a film, Martin Freeman has been my choice but never actually thought he would get it. Its going to be a long wait.

I cant wait for some set shots and eventually a trailer

Elijah Wood Likely to Return for The Hobbit

Quote:
Since it was announced, The Hobbit has spawned rumors that characters from the original three films would make an appearance despite their not appearing specifically in the original text of J.R.R. Tolkein's novel.

Earlier today, Deadline offered more specific details, indicating that the actors likely to return include Orlando Bloom and Elijah Wood in addition to the more obvious potential casting of Ian McKellan and Andy Serkis (whose characters both play prominent roles in the original story).

Though nothing is guaranteed at this time, TheOneRing.net suggests that Wood, at least, is a near certainty and offers some spoilers as to how his appearance is planned to play out, which you can read about by clicking here.

Two Hobbit films are expected to go into production shortly.

I wouldn't mind seeing him at the very end of the second film as a cameo appearance to bridge the gap between these and the LotR films.

The description I've read of the Elijah/Frodo appearance makes perfect sense. The studio may have requested it, but Jackson is working it in so that it doesn't violate the story at all.

If you've read the spoiler for it on TOR.n, it's ironically almost exactly how I would have
[Show spoiler]done the opening of LotR if I were filming it. I would have opened LotR with a scene of "Riddles in the Dark", in flashback as a story being told by Bilbo to a group of young Hobbits or perhaps just Frodo, then he could tell him "... and that, my boy, is how it really happened; not the way I told you before".
While I like that idea for LotR, I'm not sold on doing that with The Hobbit, something feels wrong about
[Show spoiler]starting it any way other than "in a hole in the ground, there lived a Hobbit".

Unless
[Show spoiler]Bilbo starts telling Frodo the story saying "In a hole in the ground, there lived a Hobbit."
I could see that, I think it would work in context of the movie and what they're trying to go for

Ian McKellan And Andy Serkis Sign On For THE HOBBIT!

THR is reporting that Ian McKellan has officially signed on to reprise his Gandalf role in THE HOBBIT as well as Andy Serkis apparently confirming his role as Gollum (via Deadline). Keep in mind there is no confirmation from Serkis yet, but this eventuality has always been a slam dunk.

Warner Bros. is now fully financing THE HOBBIT(s) and will be distributing the movies worldwide.

THE HOBBIT starts lensing in New Zealand on February 14 and I WILL have exclusive updates for you from my embedded sources! That's a slam dunk too :-)
