My first experience of The Original Trilogy was on DVD so I'm not bothered about original versions; can't miss what you haven't seen.

Hopefully the packaging stays as it is, only removing the bluray logo and having a blu banner that comes off once you remove the plastic film, keeping it simple and iconic.

Having said that, exclusive Death Star/Millenium Falcon packaging would be extremely hard to ignore
I've pre-order on Amazon and HMV too and will cancel one depending upon how I feel closer to the time.

I would defintely expect the artwork to change because all that's being shown at the moment is just temporary artwork until the official, final one comes along.

Do you think that there will be a Blu-ray version of the Phantom Edit?

That would make it tolerable to watch Episode 1 again. If not I will be skipping that disk in the set...

I doubt it, but who knows what we're in store for. I personally prefer TPM over the other Star Wars sequels and find the film great fun although it's humopur is a little juvenile for my tastes, I can see GL writing in his legal pad "well I've talked about the senate for two minutes.... time for a poop joke...."

I'm amazed how excited I am for this set to be released hopefully Lucasfilm will filter out titbits week by week and satisfy our hunger. I can see this been one of the biggest days of the year filmwise and that includes all the cinema releases.

From George Lucas:

Quote:
There will only be one. And it won't be what I would call the "rough cut," it'll be the "final cut." The other one will be some sort of interesting artifact that people will look at and say, "There was an earlier draft of this." The same thing happens with plays and earlier drafts of books. In essence, films never get finished, they get abandoned. At some point, you're dragged off the picture kicking and screaming while somebody says, "Okay, it's done." That isn't really the way it should work. Occasionally, [you can] go back and get your cut of the video out there, which I did on both American Graffiti and THX 1138; that's the place where it will live forever. So what ends up being important in my mind is what the DVD version is going to look like, because that's what everybody is going to remember. The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won't last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you'll be able to project it on a 20' by 40' screen with perfect quality. I think it's the director's prerogative, not the studio's to go back and reinvent a movie.
It all sounds quite depressing on the theatrical ANH front but fingers crossed 'no news is good news' as they say.

While I don't speak for everyone here, the best of the 3 OT films IMO (TESB) was the one that had the touch up for the special editions that I was most convinced with apart from the removal of Jason Wingreens voice and re-dubbed with Temuera Morrison. That and the CHEAP rip off sequence of Vader's arrival onto the Death Star from ROTJ.

Except earlier drafts of books don't get RELEASED TO THE PUBLIC, his justification for abandoning and trying to bury the originals is ridiculous, but oh well.

I just think that the original theatrical cuts are part of our history as well as GL's and they should be honoured that way....

I agree.

I wasn't born until well after the original trilogy came out and grew up with the Special Editions and prequels, but I would so love to have the original theatrical cuts in this set.

I can see some logic in what he says and as much as he maybe quite stubborn and arrogant, he clearly does care about what he's showing to the public, regardless of whether they like it or not. And it could be it seems he doesn't care because it's not what fans like or see as what Star Wars should be. Yes, quite a bit of his tinkering is controversial and they may not be as good as he thinks they are, but at least he means well in what he does.

I may not like all his changes, but I think some of things said about him are very vulgar and disgusting.

Well said TL you have an old head on young shoulders. I'm loath to criticise the man when he's brought me so much joy and excitement over the years. I may not agree with everything he says and does but that's his preogative. I don't think he does things intentionally to hurt the fans it's just when we grow up with things we love we become protective of them as well.

And it's nice to see his daughter carrying the torch now by writing for Star Wars The Clone Wars series.

I agree absolutely. I grew up with the originals and so did many of the other millions that anticipate this boxset coming out. At the end of the day though whether we agree or disagree, like or dislike, it's Lucas' story and he'll do pretty much what he likes with it.

As great as it is having the Star Wars films release date on the horizon, don't you find were all wishing our lives away waiting for all the classic films to be released on blu? After SW, it'll only be the same score with Indy, then LOTR Extended Eds, then something else...

Yes it is but Star Wars is something special isn't it? I'd be psyched for Indy, LOTR EE's, Jurassic Park etc but the Star Wars release is a 'stop the presses' moment.

Yup. It's the be all and end all, the holy grail, the cherry on the cake. Basically there's nothing like it.

Thanks for saying that, it really means something to me.

(In a good way of course.)

Can anybody explain the history/different version to me?
I've only ever watched them from these VHS onwards:
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_f4AaBCHTRe...SW-Jvideo2.jpg

Well I think it was those ones (well UK version), as it they were given to my brother one xmas!
I've got in mind that in New Hope, there was a scene the MilleniumFalcon of the group being comforted by Jabba the Hut, who was human with a thick fur coat on, but I've also got in mind there was one with-out this scene. As well as the remastered/re-CGI'd ones with the computer Jabba the Han standing on his tail.

Have I just made this all up? Anybody want to confirm?

Jabba was originally played by an actor in a fur coat as a substitute for a later puppet or animation. For the special edition a CGI Jabba was inserted and Harrison's performance manipulated so he stepped on his tail. For the DVD's Jabba was redone to higher standards. The theatrical cut in '77 didn't have Jabba or Boba Fett at all just a mention of Jabba. Hope that clears that up for you.
