The physical demands and athelticism required are the same as world class athletes at the top of any sport. And more. Some of the poses and positions they strike are unnatural (like a baseball pitchers throws) and take a toll on their bodies. Add to this that they are "acting" as well during a performance. And behind stage, you have the cutthroat competition, the endless training, the strict diets etc.

I know a few women that do ballet and it's a pretty significant hobby... if it even is just that. One person put her medical career on hold to perform for four years then went back to medical school. It's not just a sport. It's a passion.

The Manchurian Candidate (1962)

The Manchurian Candidate, directed by John Frankenheimer (director of one of my all-time favorites – Ronin), is an intelligent film resonant from its time. It lies at the very stem of the genre psychological thriller. Upon their return from the war, Sgt. Raymond Shaw and his platoon are brainwashed with the illusion that Shaw saved their lives. The lie almost goes unnoticed, but a peculiar nightmare begins haunting a few of the soldiers. As Major Marco (Sinatra) begins an investigation, the truth begins to surface and it goes much deeper than he ever imagined.

Beyond the plot, the film is engaging and suspenseful. I am sure there are many ways this film could have failed – made evident by the remake which had all the ingredients to succeed… and then didn't – but this one has a strong cerebral effect on the audience, and an ending that is just as gripping as the events leading up to it. Acting was great all around, but the strongest contribution was Angela Lansbury as Shaw's mother. There is something about frightening mothers that… well, frightens me. Maybe it's because maternal drive is just as mysterious as it is strong.

I feel the idea of a brainwashed assassin has been done many times, but just the thought that this was released when it was in history creeps under my skin. Although it lies within my genre of preference, I don't have much desire to revisit it nor do I entirely embrace it as I know others do. I do not watch many political films, so I probably would not have seen this had it not been chosen. Given my bias, I still firmly believe this film deserves at least a 3.5/5. Not a masterpiece by any means, but The Manchurian Candidate is one significant, well-made thriller.

Andrew Garfield was excellent in his role and worthy of an Oscar nom, albeit he wouldn't be nominated if it wasn't a bit of an off-year in that category. As good as his performance was, I can't see Garfield ever making it to the upper echelon of actors because his range seems limited.

Jesse Eisenberg nailed his performance and I definitely think he deserves a nomination. I loved how he always said "yeah." Like Garfield but even more so, Eisenberg seems to have zero range. That's not necessarily a bad thing, as many good actors don't have range.

The music by Reznor was pretty good but incredibly overhyped. It fit with the movie well and I liked that it was a bit different, but it's not an all-time great and I don't even think it should win the Oscar. The test of a great score isn't whether you'd listen to it in your cd player, it's whether the music enhances the scenes of the movie to a significant degree. His score improved some scenes but never significantly.

Cinematography was pretty good but definitely not deserving of any type of award or nomination.

The guy who played the twins did a very good job and I can see him getting more roles.

The directing was good but absolutely not award-worthy, and this has nothing to do with me not being a Fincher fan. I thought he directed well in Fight Club and especially in Benjamin Button. I think it's ridiculous that by default the film that wins best picture almost always wins best director. That award should go to the best direction, hence its name. Although I liked this film better than Inception and Black Swan, Nolan and Aronofsky ran circles around Fincher in regards to direction of their respective films.

The screenplay was excellent in all regards, a truly deserving Oscar winner. It's the one and ONLY thing that will be memorable about this film (aside from the subject matter) imo.

People say this film will be remembered because of its themes. I disagree. Yes, it deals with the timeless themes of greed and friendship, but the film never truly gets into them. There's very little depth to the characters here, especially Zuckerberg. You never see his motivation for

or why he did a lot of the things he did. To me, this was an entertaining film but not a deep one.

The editing was very good but nowhere near as good as Inception's.

Justin Timberlake's performance was AT BEST mediocre. The fact that there was hype of an Oscar nom when the film came out is a joke.

I found the film highly enjoyable and so did my girlfriend. I'd put it as the second best film of the year so far, with The Fighter beating it out.

Overall, this is a very good film and an extremely entertaining one, but it's not an all-time great film. Like the Hurt Locker, it's a film I see being forgotten as a best picture winner 10 years from now. I still plan on buying it at some point.

Weird, if I were to summarize my thoughts, it would be that statement, but ass-backwards

Generally speaking, I think it is very well-made, but besides the fast and engaging dialogue, it did not interest or grab me much. Maybe I exaggerated the "all-time great" thing, but I do believe it's a significant piece of cinema. Definitely agree on the twin's performance, the screenplay, and Eisenberg. I can't agree on the score's impact and the cinematography. I'll still write the review sometime later but wanted to comment on your thoughts.

You know, I don't feel like Andrew Garfield (or Mila Kunis for that matter) got snubbed at all. What was so great about Garfield? I guess I wasn't impressed at the Oscar caliber.

The Fighter was outstanding. I'd give the win to either of the two. Maybe give The Social Network the edge. As great a film as Fighter was, you simply can't dismiss the fact that it's cliche, unfortunately.

I watched Prom Night last night, I expected much more from this. This one was pretty lame to be honest. Story was lame, characters aswell.

Just skip this title, there's nothing interesting to be found in this movie.

good gravy, what a long film.

as anyone who has seen any Kubrick film knows, he takes his damn time when telling a story - both overall in general and in individual scenes with a slow, lingering camera. Eyes Wide Shut is definitely no different. it feels a lot like 2001: A Space Odyssey (a classic), but definitely isn't (not a classic is Eyes Wide Shut).

hell, i'd say Eyes Wide Shut is more confusing than 2001, which is saying a lot since many are confused beyond belief by the sci-fi masterpiece, but this, this was puzzling and left me very :shirtyeyes: to say the least.

there are plusses and minuses for Eyes Wide Shut. the acting may be some of the most bland, maybe even bad, that i've seen in quite awhile. Cruise, who i normally enjoyed is very subdued here. is that the role? stuck up doctor? yeah. but it doesn't help to have uninteresting characters in a very slow paced odd story that drags it's feet far too long.

a few plus qualities:

+ score
+ directing (for the most part, some zoom in moments felt very cheesy and "made for tv" almost)
+ atmosphere
+ cinematography
+ makes you think, kind of challenges you to question motives and actions

with that said, i still enjoyed it, and glad i bought it (was only $10) and will watch it again. and i'm sure, much like 2001, i will enjoy it more and understand it more with future viewings. i saw Eyes Wide Shut when it came out in 1999 (i was 11 ) and of course was baffled by it, and 11 years later, still baffled. but i respect it for being curiously made, and offering something that stands out amongst a midst of endless sequels and remakes in today's Hollywood.

as for a score? eesh. can't really give one now, honestly. it's not a 4/5, and it's not lower than a 2.5/5... so... let's go with a 3.25/5, but of course, always subject to change. much like Riff, putting a number on a film to show a feeling of it kind of doesn't make sense. sometimes i can say, "yes, this is a 4.5/5." but other times, i can't really 'feel' the score. this is one of those cases.

Your complaints are pretty much universal. Kidman and Cruise are supposed to be insufferable, i think. Kidman really exasperates me with her slow, thick, "breathy" delivery in every scene. I laugh at the movie more now than i did the first couple times i saw it and the music, as always for Kubrick, is mesmerizing. All in all it's second tier Kubrick, but still a B+ from me.

The plot is not the best but the action scenes are great and highly entertaining. Henrikson and Vosloo are two great villains and Van Damme kicks ass from beginning to end. There's also a lot of slow motion and doves hehe. The showdown is one big thrill ride. And Van Damme knocks out a goddamn rattlesnake Where else do you get to see such a thing?! This movie rocks

This film wasn't on my radar until a friend recommended it. The title seemed meaningless and I really couldn't imagine what it might be about. As a fan of Anthony Hopkins, I decided to buy it and give it a chance.

Good decision.

The film opens with a shot of Burt Munro (Hopkins) waking up. Until he speaks, he's just Anthony Hopkins. Then the New Zealand accent comes out and Munro starts to emerge.

Burt Munro lived in Invercargill, New Zealand and had a dream to go to Bonneville Flats to see how fast his motorcycle could go. He was born in 1899 and

[Show spoiler]first visited Bonneville in 1956, setting the record for bikes under 1,000cc in 1967.

So while the choice of Hopkins looks strange, he was the right age and a perfect fit for the part.

Munro held several speed records in New Zealand before making his first trip and was something of a celebrity. He annoyed his neighbors by working on his bike in the early mornings and urinating on his lemon tree. He sounds like quite a character.

Hopkins certainly plays him as an eccentric with passion and a lot of charm. He has the ability to win people over to his way of thinking and borrows the money he needs to make the trip to the US from the local bank. He also has heart trouble, but hides that from most people. His honesty and the way he accepts when he is wrong makes him easy to like.

The film really takes off when he makes the trip. He travels by boat and pays for his passage by working as its chef. On arriving in the US, he has to face the reality of the high prices and the chance that people will try to rip him off. He books into a motel more often used by prostitutes and befriends the night clerk.

Although he's initially naive, he turns out to be perfectly capable of surviving in his new surroundings. He buys a car and negotiates well, making another friend in the process. Then he makes the trip to Utah. The Indian in the title is a type of motorcycle manufactured in 1920. He tows it on a trailer that he made and somehow gets it to Bonneville on time.

Having made the long trip from the other side of the world,

Another friend, who he met casually on his arrival in Utah,

[Show spoiler]tries to persuade the officials to let him race. They say no because not only did he fail to register, his bike is totally unsafe and he doesn't even have safety gear. Munro isn't having any of it and persuades a couple of people to help him test the bike one morning. The officials agree to the test to shut him up, but his passion and determination convince them that he knows what he's doing. He's allowed to race.

The rest is history.

Not too bad for an Australian low budget horror comedy. The killer's mask looks pretty sweet but he is never really intimidating or so. I remember this film from my childhood. It scared the hell out of me. Now, it was quite unintentionally funny at times haha. It's also pretty short with only 78 minutes (PAL). It seems kinda rushed at times, but it's never boring. It's just a fun movie that you pop in on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Overall I liked it, but it's nothing that stands out from the rest.

Shrek - This was my first time viewing this film as I am a late bloomer to animated films. This was a very good film and I now see why it gets the pub that it does. Eddie Murphy makes the film and is brilliant and perfect as the donkey. I like how they have all the

incorporated into the story. It was a nice twist how they used

The PQ and AQ are perfect and simply put its a fantastic ride all the way through. Im sure most have seen this film already but for those who have not, the film comes with a high recommendation no doubt.

Shrek 2 - This film continues where the first film left off and doesnt lose any juice. While I give the edge to the first film by just a little bit, this film more than holds its own for a sequel. As in the first film we get to see even more of other

was a nice addition. Eddie was still up to his great wise cracks and was a big factor in this film just as in the first film.

This series has gotten off to a great start and while I am looking forward to part 3, I have heard bad things about it so Im not sure what to expect. This film comes highly regarded just as the first film.

That movie is damn near perfect. I had a ho-hum attitude about it when entering the theater. That changed immediately, and I loved it.

The PQ and AQ are perfect and simply put its a fantastic ride all the way through. Im sure most have seen this film already but for those who have not, the film comes with a high recommendation no doubt.

Shrek 2 - This film continues where the first film left off and doesnt lose any juice. While I give the edge to the first film by just a little bit, this film more than holds its own for a sequel. As in the first film we get to see even more of other

was a nice addition. Eddie was still up to his great wise cracks and was a big factor in this film just as in the first film.

This series has gotten off to a great start and while I am looking forward to part 3, I have heard bad things about it so Im not sure what to expect. This film comes highly regarded just as the first film.
