For 159.99 I'd expect the Shat himself to come into my living room and perform a rap version of Shakespear's Hamlet with Tribbles and then act out half a dozen TOS fanscripts... with voices... Wow Paramount where prices boldly go...

Pic of box at http://www.play.com/DVD/Blu-ray/4-/1.../Product.html# I notice Amazon have increased the prices of the individual boxes to over £50 each but that does not make this set a bargain

![]() ![]() I see this has a new date of May 2011. http://www.play.com/DVD/Blu-ray/4-/1...e/Product.html http://hmv.com/hmvweb/displayProduct...;-1&sku=799548 http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004E10QCI/ Looks pretty amazing. I don't consider myself a Star Trek fan (seen the original TV years ago) but the new film makes me want to go back to the original shows. I tried the Blu-ray movies but didn't like them. The old TV shows might be better. |

I would recommend checking out a couple of episodes just to get a feel for the series. Considering the cost of the series (even from the US which is where I purchased mine) it's an expensive blind buy! Some of my favourites from the first season are "The Corbomite Maneuver", "Balance of Terror", "Space Seed" and the extremely popular "The City on the Edge of Forever". They would serve as a good approximation of the overall feel of the show. Those episodes are not only my favourites but are also quite widely accepted to be some of the best of the series and if you don't find them to your liking it's highly unlikely you'd enjoy the series. One thing I will also point out is that the show doesn't have an overall arc other than the 5 year mission so watching the episodes above won't mean you've missed out on vital plot lines like other highly serialised sci-fi such as Battlestar Galactica. The Original Series is more cerebral than the recent film, it more about ideas than action in some episodes. Although it's great fun seeing Captain Kirk trying to punch his way out of trouble. Plus there's plenty of punch-ups, phaser fights and pretty girls and it doesn't always take itself seriously. But it's light years away from JJ Abrams Star Trek.

The thing is -for me- the new Star Trek film reminded me and took me back to the charm and fun of the original TV series. It is also very respectful to me of the my memory of the original series. I've seen next to nothing of all the new TV garbage -I lost count of the watered down nonsense. I can't possibly see how anyone can be a fan of all that tat.
I recently tried to rewatch 1-4 (which I had last seen in an all-night cinema event!) on Blu-ray and they have good points but they (especially part 1) are very poor. The later Star Treks are just plain shite. Either run out of ideas, cartoon-like, Geroge Lucasfied or Terminator in space wanabes etc etc. Just bad. Good elements however and that's what's in the new movie. I think the new movie is fresh and it has a superb cast. And it's fun. The original TV series is excellent to my mind and its charm will hold up well if you fancy it of course. It's not a hard decison although I've not made the decision as I may want to leave my memory of the TV shows firmly fixed but given some oxygen with the new movie. |

Star Trek The Slow Motion Picture is well regarded by a lot of people it made a lot of money and had big ideas with good special effects. They never quite got the movies right for people who wanted a two hour episode on the big screen. Some of the films are well loved The Voyage Home and The Wrath of Khan in particular. Some of the time-travel alt-reality episodes are great fun and real stand-up well alongside other classic TV from that era.
I've always loved all things Star Trek but the price of this set is crazy I know a lots gone into it but it would have to drop 110 quid for me to even think of it lol. I'd pick the TOS DVD sets up for about 12-13 pounds the picture is great before dropping series cash on the blu-ray set. One thing I like about Star Trek TNG in particular if you watch the episodes late at night they can take on a different form than they did when they used to be shown at 6pm some can be quite creepy if you're in the mood for it.... |

I'm not really a Star Trek fan, only really liking TNG, but I found an image off Amazon showing how the contents will look, so I thought I'd share it with you.
![]() [Show spoiler] It looks pretty cool and once the price has come down enough I may get it, but of course as I mentioned, I'm not a Trekkie, so I'll pass for now. ![]() |

Can't say the packaging looks very imaginative to me, unless there's a book or a pair of rubber ears hiding in the box. I seem to recall the original series was issued on DVD years ago in plastic pods that showed a bit of effort had been put in.
Meanwhile, if you'd really like to suffer search Youtube for The Firm Star Trekkin' for one of the most irritating records ever made. I warned you |

Forgive me for bumping this thread but just in case any Star Trek fans are interested - in addition to releasing the Original Series as a complete set on DVD and BD, Paramount in the UK are releasing the whole of The Next Generation on DVD as well, with packaging to match the TOS release.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Star-Trek-Ne...221123&sr=1-13 Just thought it might be of interest to some fans considering the last 3 'Complete Series' DVD boxsets TNG had are all out of print (and the most recent one, the 20th Anniversary, had terribly cheap packaging). And, considering the amount of time and money it would take to get the series in HD, DVD is gonna be as good as it gets for a while. (plus it looks from the Amazon page to just be the already-existing discs put into new packaging, so not struck from new masters or anything.) |

I quite like the slimcases they're still available for under £15 at amazon (along with the Voyager DS9 and Enterprise sets). I picked up Season Three from Tesco's a while back for a bargain £4! If Paramount put a decent price on this new set, say £70 a lot of people would jump at it! Paramount don't really get value for money.... |
