I tend to enjoy Fincher's movies and was hoping that he could turn what I consider a boring topic into a compelling story.

He didn't.

I would rate Se7en, The Game, Fight Club, Zodiac and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button above The Social Network.

The movie was competent and told its story, but I didn't find myself truly engaged at any point. None of the acting performances were anything special and I wasn't given a reason to care about any of the characters. The script was trying to be clever, but merely consisted of a lot of dialogue thrown at the audience very fast.

I suppose this is the movie that will earn most of the Oscars, but none will be deserved. I would definitely rate six of the 10 best picture nominees ahead of The Social Network, and maybe as many as eight.

Overall 3.5/5

Nothing wrong with that.

I personally felt it was better than I expected, but still not that Oscar-worthy. We'll see what happens...

It will be released almost the same time on Blu-ray as well, wtf. Might as well blindbuy it and see it in the theater...

Steve46, I think I largely agree with your review of TSN, there weren't any likeable characters for me as well.

Too bad you didn't enjoy it as much as some of us

To each his own though and all that

I cared about the two main characters (particularly Garfield's), thought the two leads were very good. I didn't think the script tried to be anything other than what it was (straight forward and very fast dialog)

I've only seen 4 as of right now and placed it 2nd to Toy Story 3.

We'll see what happens with The King's Speech tomorrow.

It started out as Mark getting back at his ex through blogging and it just grew from there. Mark is a jerk and that shines through in the movie as he hurts anyone and everyone in his rise to the top, proving he really doesn't care about anyone but himself.

Red
  • 2010 | PG-13 | 111 Minutes

  • Director: Robert Schwentke

  • Starring: Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich

  • Action | Comedy | Crime

  • First Time Viewing

It's ridiculous, it's over the top...and it's awesome! If you're looking for a fun way to kill two hours, RED is a good bet for you.

The main cast is great together; some really hilarious stuff in this one, especially from Malkovich.

The action is absurd most of the time....which makes it more fun

If this had been a movie that was supposed to be taken seriously...it would be horrendous. But it's not, it knows how incredibly it is and revels in it.

I say rent it and watch it for a load of fun

ouch. sorry to hear you didn't enjoy it too much Steve. as you probably know my from my review(s), i loved it. and i could easily see it winning BP - even though i haven't seen all 10 nominees yet. i thought it was all around a tremendous success on every level.

i don't know if i really cared about the main characters, but that was the point. egotistical, selfish, self-absorbed... all sorts of good stuff that isn't likely to be cheered or befriended.

i don't need to like the characters to enjoy a film, but of course, it does help. but here, it definitely wasn't needed because the acting, script and story were so engaging. just my 2 cents though

it is. betrayal, callousness, how it all starts, friction it creates and the cruel irony it plays in many people's lives.

hmm... i really had no interest in RED before a few of my friends said it was "super awesome" and now this review by you makes me think this is something worth checking out. probably will, and may pick it up when it hits $8 or so for something fun and funny to add to my collection

(which, can i write it as "Red", or does it always have to be "RED"?)

I can't guarantee that you'll like it...but you'll know from pretty early on in a scene with Bruce Willis if the film will work for you or not.

RED is an acronym, so it should always be RED.

Just saw an advanced screening of Take Me Home Tonight. Really enjoyed it. It was very funny and I loved the 80s setting and music. I would give it a solid 8.5/10

Guys, to be honest I don't understand why Red is so succesful, despite the awesome cast the characters weren't that interesting and the music was absolutely atrocious in my opinion, almost walked out because of that. The cinematography I thought was extremely boring too.

Film: 1 1/2 stars (out of 4)

Absolutely hated this film, despite the fact that I've liked the rest of Aronofsky's films and The Fountain is my favorite film. The only saving grace for the film is that it had decent editing, much in the line of Requiem, and its black and white photography was decent. Acting-wise it was poor, its direction wasn't good, Mansell's score was grating (despite creating a frenetic mood), the dialogue and script were laughable, and it was essentially pointless. This is coming from someone who is fascinated and has done a lot of research on the golden ratio and numerology, as well. I wouldn't recommend this experience to anyone--I want my 80 minutes back.
