it's films like this and Get Smart that make me wonder why he would leave The Office (where he's been his absolute best imo) to try and focus on Hollywood and writing scripts. he sucks when not playing Michael Scott.

only exception being his role in Anchorman, which was fantastically hilarious

but then again, that scene i'm referring to could probably be found on youtube as well if you'd be interested in it at all
Have you seen Dan in Real Life? He is very good in that and the movie is good too.

Also I forgot to address your Kunis/Franco part of your previous post

I still have the disc so I'll put it back in and check it out later

Its a romantic comedy. But it takes a serious turn. A romantic dramedy I'd call it. Touching and realistic look at relationships.

Tim Burton's Batman Returns (1992)

While often disregarded as being overly dark and sinister, it’s this level of Burton-esque darkness that compels me so. The director was granted full creative control here and it shows. One may consider Batman to be the film noir of the series whereas Returns is the surreal horror film. It’s unlike other superhero films in that it’s almost completely devoid of heroism. You’d be hard-pressed to find a comic book film so nihilistic and strangely sad. The incredibly-designed Gotham City, a wonder to look at, is as desolate and haunting as the film’s central characters – the Dark Knight himself and enemies The Penguin and Catwoman, who serve as perfect reflections of the masked vigilante, in terms of alienation and ‘difficulty with duality.’ Batman Returns succeeds both as an intense action film and as an engaging character study, going beyond the brilliance already set by its predecessor.

10/10

Another person I can disagree with on Get Smart. I will never finish Date Night because I will never even start watching it, so we kinda agree on that at least. No, not even Mila Kunis can get me to watch it.

I really enjoyed both of those movies, especially Little Miss Sunshine. I also think he has done some good voice acting...Over the Hedge and Despicable Me come to mind. I think he just needs a script that fits his peculiar shtick in order to shine.

this... this is not a horror film.

i was very concerned when i blind bought Let Me In. some part of me said i would enjoy it, and another part of me was worried that this was going to be a standard, cliche riddled Americanized horror film. now, i have never seen Let the Right One In, so i had nothing to compare this to. so i went in knowing very little about this film. all i really knew was that it was slower paced and was about
[Show spoiler]vampires
...and i'm not even sure if that should be in spoiler tags

i ended up LOVING Let Me In because of the relationship dynamic between Owen and Abby

the story is about a young girl who moves to a new city and makes friends with a lonely boy named Owen who is an outcast at school. and while Abby is also an outcast in a much different way, she contains a deep well of strength that she teaches Owen to have as he grows as a person. honestly, the most memorable and touching scenes i will take away from Let Me In are the scenes between Abby and Owen on the playground. beautiful lighting, wonderful acting, and a haunting and somber score make it a magical setting that few films achieve. i could go on and on but will sum it up with saying this: the relationship of two outsiders bonding and finding strength together is one of my favorite cinematic relationships ever. made even more touching by the sheer innocence of them being 12 and bonding over the simplest and most mundane things, while also connecting on an emotional level that few achieve. you really feel that these two are connected in a sense and it's made all the more believeable by the awesome job Kodi and Chloe do.

speaking of which, these two are gonna be megastars one day. Chloe easily is the better of the two as she has extreme talent and will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come - if she so chooses. but Kodi is no slouch either. the only downside for Kodi is he is playing a role very similar to his role in The Road, so i haven't seen much range from him, but he is a gifted actor and will improve overtime - again, if he so chooses.

meanwhile, the individual merits of Let Me In are outstanding as well. the film has a very lonely, desolate feel and atmosphere to it, which never lets up. Abby and Owen are two lonely children and the film expresses this well in obvious and not so obvious ways.

lighting, directing, writing and acting are all massive plusses

are there some eerie, extremely tense, scary scenes? yes. but not a whole lot. honestly, the film reminded me a lot of Antichrist with looking eerie, creepy and haunting, but not necessarily being a scary / horror film. people expecting a straight up generic horror film will be left incredibly angry and bored. sucks to be them, but i loved the film for what Reeves represented, and definitely makes me want to see Let the Right One In sooner than later.

*** no real complaints about the film. maybe a few questionable pacing and structuring issues, but nothing severe, and the 109 minutes flew by.

EDIT: for those who have seen it, the only laughable, oddly illogical question i had was the school setting:
[Show spoiler]since when are 12 year-olds in class with apparently 16-17 year olds? and what 12 year olds have swimming classes and weight lifting?!
although since this is a remake of a Swedish film, maybe they do those things at that age in Swedish schools, but i know most U.S. schools don't do this until much, much later.

very, very much so recommended

PQ: 4/5 a lot of dark scenes of course, but i love the use of orange, blues and whites in numerous scenes
AQ: 4/5 a very quiet soundtrack with a lot of quiet dialogue, so my volume was quiet high and not a lot of loud scenes, but when they arrive, you know they're there.

4/5 - loved it
BOOOOOO.. I would never watch this again. You need to watch the OG. It was wayyy better.

This is another fine heart-wrenching drama with one or two important messages. It is stylish, and bit intense, and moves at an adequate pace. There are quite a few interesting scenes here and there, and it all collectively presents some themes and ideas worth thinking about. I don’t find it 100% thrilling, but it is worthwhile seeing.

I feel that the story is rather uneventful, and at first glance the main character seemed very unlikable. But as it goes on, the character takes on a shape and form that the audience can’t help but to feel sympathetic towards. It also becomes clear that the film has a strong spiritual basis, with themes of life, death, redemption, and selflessness. At times there are individual scenes and lines that brilliantly underscore these ideas. Otherwise, it feels a bit aimless, especially with the use of staggered flashbacks and flashy editing.

As a film, it features quality photography with some gorgeous imagery at times. Will Smith and all other actors are good in their respective roles. Production value is good. Music is smooth (I especially loved hearing Muse’s rendition of “Feeling Good” in the mix).

In the end, as expected, this is a drama that I’m sure most other folks will love, but I find a little dull.

3.5/5 (entertainment: 3/5, story: 3.5/5, film: 4/5, intellectual/emotional impact: 3/5)

Recommendation: Rent it, see what you think.
Glad you liked this one, i thought it was better than The Pursuit of Happiness.

Hey guys, figured to ask this here as you are most knowledgable in movies IMO.

So, should I blind buy Raging Bull on Blu?
Is it a good movie? Does it have any rewatchability value? What movie is it comparable to?

Basically, Scorsesse is my most favorite director of all time, and 2 of his movies that I have seen so far (Gangs Of New York and Casino) are in my top 30 for sure.

Thanks.

eh... it's hard to say.

i blind bought it a few weeks ago and gave it a 3.5/5 on my first viewing, but it may go up a bit with future viewings. do i feel it gets a bit too much recognition as a "classic"? absolutely.

but was De Niro marvelous? absolutely. as was Scorsese's directing.

while i'm glad to own it, i wish i would have waited for it to hit $12-$15 or so and not bought it at $20. so if anything, i would wait for a price drop.

also, i would rank most of Scorsese's films in my favorite order as:

Taxi Driver
Gangs of New York
GoodFellas
Casino
The Departed
Raging Bull
The Aviator
Shutter Island

Default Cure (1997)

Genre: Crime/Horror/Mystery
Synopsis: Set in and around a bleak, decaying Tokyo, a series of murders have been committed by average, ordinary people who claim to have had no control over their horrifying actions. Following the only link—a mysterious stranger who had brief contact with each perpetrator/victim—detective Kenichi Takabe places his own sanity on the line as he tries to end the wave of inexplicable terror.
Running Time: 111 minutes

Director: Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Pulse)
Writers: Kiyoshi Kurosawa
Stars: Masato Hagiwara (All Under the Moon), Kôji Yakusho (Shall We Dance?)

I went in knowing nothing about the film and man, was this one awesome. I can't believe I haven't heard of or seen this until now. Cure isn't your typical horror flick. It's a philosophical slow-burner with a rather unique take on the serial killer genre. Basically, Cure is about a detective who is trying to find the person responsible for a series of bizarre murders who -- get this -- uses hypnotism. Everything about this movie is perfect. The two main leads are terrific, especially Masato Hagiwara as the serial killer Mamiya. That guy just shot right up to the top of my favorite horror characters of all-time. I'm pretty sure once you watch this, you'll be amazed, terrified, and annoyed by him at the same time. He's that good. The cinematography is beautiful and long-take fans will love this one as there are plenty to be seen here. The score is wonderful, shifting from contradictorily happy tunes to eerie, weird noises. The pacing is just right; It takes its time yet it's masterfully crafted that it manages to be gripping from start to finish. Cure is highly recommended.

Default The Princess and the Frog (2009)

Genre: Animation/Family/Fantasy
Synopsis: A fairy tale set in Jazz Age-era New Orleans and centered on a young girl named Tiana and her fateful kiss with a frog prince who desperately wants to be human again.
Running Time: 97 minutes

Directors: Ron Clements (Aladin, The Little Mermaid), John Musker (Aladin, The Little Mermaid)
Writers: Ron Clements, John Musker, Rob Edwards (Treasure Planet)
Stars: Anika Noni Rose (Dreamgirls), Oprah Winfrey (The Color Purple), Terrence Howard (Iron Man), John Goodman (Monsters, Inc.)

I love Disney's animated films, but I skipped The Princess and the Frog when it was released on theaters since I wasn't really impressed by the trailers. So when I caught this on cable recently, I was immensely surprised and thoroughly entertained. This is how you do fairy-tale musicals. Beautiful animation, lovable characters and catchy songs. Tangled nailed it with Rapunzel's character, but the rest fell flat and the songs were uninspired and unmemorable. There are a ton of beautifully conceived scenes in this film. In fact, it possesses some of the best I've ever seen from Disney. The Princess and the Frog perfectly balances lightheartedness and darkness, and it's great, family fun from start to end. Don't miss it like I did. Highly recommended.
